#Pokemon #PM7
It’s easy to forget how much merch Poliwhirl had in Gen 1, but they really tried to make it one of the iconic original Pokémon.
I remember they had a lot of exphasis on Poliwhirl for merchandise and ads. Poliwhril used to be everywhere. And it makes happy because I love Poliwhirl. Favorite Water type Gen 1 after Blastoise
Poliwhirl was/is Junichi Masuda favorite gen 1 Pokémon, and that is why there was Poliwhirl all over the march
I find it hilarious that somehow it had a spot alongside Pikachu, Charmander, and Squirtle over Bulbasaur
It was also Red’s original partner Pokémon in the manga! Lots of Poliwhirl love, and I love to see it
Poliwhirl was on the cover (center) of Time Magazine back in November of 1999. Could be why Poliwhirl got on so much merch. Which is understandable since he’s such a cool Pokémon
Fun Fact: I heard that before Pikachu was cemented as the top mascot, the company tried a bunch of different pokemon to see which one would stick and Poliwhirl was one of them.
So was Clefairy. The very original manga like before pokemon adventures the main character had a Clefairy
But they decided on Pikachu because it would look appealing to both boys and girls, that doesn't stop Poliwhirl from being the favourite of one of the creators or the first pokemon of Red in the manga
Yeah
He was on reds team
WOW
The figures that came out during gen 1 pokemon were the best. Like the ones that came with the Gameboy ball thing were genuinely quality imo
I find it funny how John genuinely likes almost every thing he was sent, almost like a kid on Christmas Day
Except the fake Lego
Poliwhirl was Satoshi Tajiri's favorite Pokémon, hence the favoritism it got back then. I kinda miss the days of Poliwhirl popularity, if I'm being honest.
And that makes poliwraith like riachu
And poliwag pichu
Would this make Politoed like Alolan Raichu?
Poliwhirl > Pikachu
@@ElShotCallerkeb agree
I'm going to guess the reason why there was so much Poliwag and Poliwhirl merch was because Poliwag was the favorite pokemon of the creator. Also it was a very important pokemon in the 1st gen manga, being Red's first pokemon there.
I think it's also cause poliwerl was a main pokemon in the manga :3
its also a very simple design, so easier to make merch, easy paint job being only 3 colors.
That is exactly why. Think the only reason they stopped promoting Poliwhirl so much was because parents started voicing concerns that the pattern on Poliwhirl's stomach was hypnotizing their kids into becoming obsessed with Pokemon. No really 😑
But yet not much of poliwraith
Croakier is more curse
5:41 FROAKIE HIT THE GYM
Poliwhirl was the creator’s favorite Pokémon. That’s why it was pushed so hard. The Welch’s jar was a series of jelly jars that they had Pokémon art on for a bit.

I love John's pure childlike, joy with the pokemon beyblades. The pure joy in his voice is just incredible.
To be fair, they're kinda awesome.
Agreed
One time as a kid I was launching Beyblades and they both slammed into each other and one broke the window 😂
@@jinlee9963damn
He needs to work with left burst to make the underground pokemon beyblade tournament
bro, the door knock was so realistic for me
This was the funniest PM7 video I've ever watched lmao. I couldn't stop laughing. This was edited so well. It might be my fav video from him so far
16:30 The look of pure, unadulterated joy and child-like innocence that came across this man's face is NOT to be denied
At least you're knowingly doing this, unlike Purplecliffe who constantly having his credit card stolen by his editors
Wait? Like as a scam? Or a prank?
@@Robbnlinzi It's prank that became a running joke on Jack's videos. They're actually REAL funny.
and most of them he gets weird stuff like taxidermy (spoilers) and (spoilers)
9:13 I also remember Poliwhirl being one of the most commonly featured Pokemon in merch in the gen 1 days.
10:04 I actually still have this exact Poliwhirl card, which I found in a Value Village. It didn't come with the pokeball case or the Certificate since it was bundled in a bag full of random stuff, but I still cherish it in one of my TCG deck boxes alongside my favorite decks I've assembled.
I'd be careful with the pokeball that came with the Poliwhirl Keychain if I were you, John. I had 3 from the gen 4 era as a kid and the spring that allows the Pokeballs to open broke after a while. Maybe your pokeball has a stronger spring since it's from the 90s and it's been sealed for years. But I'd still be careful.
The ones from the 90s were surprisingly durable actually
I’ve had one for years and It works fine
I’ve still got my og pokeball and it is great quality. So the 90s toys were very durable
i found one at a yardsale without the pokeball, but it was mewtwo not polywhirl
The Lickitung toy reaction was pure gold
I got one of them
Parkour
I love LEGO™, give that to me right now
No it was pure Iron
🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝
17:06 That magnemite definitly has sturdy.
OMG that Poliwhirl plush at 11:40 brought back early childhood memories! My brother had that one, and we both had Meowth! I put a hair tie on my Meowth's tail so we knew which one was which. This brought me so much joy seeing you open it, and I hope it brings you some joy as well John!
14:01 “why does it why why?”😂
Part of the reason Poliwhirl got so much merch is because in the original Pokemon Adventures Manga Red's first Pokemon was actually a Poliwhirl
The poliwhirl that turns into a pokéball brought back some memories as my older brother had a bugger gen 5 version with snivy and oshawot. Haven’t seen much of those anymore but i hope they return
16:06 that's not good
The only theories i can come up with about Poliwhirl being so popular for merch early on is either the fact that Red had one as his main pokemon in the manga or because someone in the merch department saw it and really liked it and so they slapped it on EVERYTHING
I love how happy john got about the beyblades and the stadium. It was truly beautiful.
This is an unboxing of a time capsule from my childhood. I had a lot of this growing up.. not all of it was Poliwhirl but some were. And you are right, Poliwhirl was pretty iconic for his time, more so than his evolution. He was rounder.. more friend shaped than Wrath, and a lot less intimidating
6:06 swole froakie
I know PM7 likes frog Pokemon, I hope this PM7 Plus guy does too
I’m sure he’ll grow attached to the Lickitung too
I don't think so because he is still wondering why there I so much poliwhirl😂
@@spartanninja3159he did say he like *the* poliboy
Same
It’s the same guy, he just has more than 1 channel
Fun fact slow poke tails fall off on thier own over time. but it does grow back. so most cases when you see slow poke tail dish in the games mostly likely they own a slow poke and tail came off like suppose to. Only ones who really harmed slow poke was team rocket. they refused to wait for the slow poke to shed thier tails off.
I never knew that 😱😱
That explains what’s going on 👏
12:00 Is anyone going to tell him that slowpokes just dropped off the tails naturally😕
the magnemite at the end tho... bro ain't even know he's the main character
I still have so many questions as to why the Slowpoke Tail plush even exists... But other than that, you got a lot of cool stuff that brings back so many memories.
Is one of them where do I get one.

As the #1 Poliwhirl enthusiast, you have no idea how happy i was seeing That Poliwhirl plush I still have it to this day, the right glove got burnt but has been with me my whole life❤
I remember having the water toys! And that old Pokemon packaging IMMEDIATELY took me back🥰
You used the end song to pokemon mystery dungen explorers of the sky and that song makes me cry every time man!!! Your videos themselves are gold so happy to have found them!!
17:00 Diglett used Dig *It was super effective* The opposing Pikachu fainted
I'm surprised the super bounce balls that had the mini Pokemon figures in them didn't make an appearance! Those were highly coveted in my circle alongside the figure packs. Related to that, the first Pokemon I ever chose was Vaporeon- it was a housewarming gift from one of my uncles.
Omg I know what your talking about because I have the bouncy ball too, dude this whole video was reminder of what pokemon stuff I had as a kid
I definitely had one and destroyed it to get the little vaporeon out
Lol omg my brother has one with Pikachu in it and I'm basically holding it rn. I'm pretty sure ik what you're talking about anyways. I am kinda sad he didn't get that in the video
"If I can prove that I never touched my bal-" Bro got me rollin😭🤣🤣🤣
The most common Pokémon in this video is a poliwhirl. Poliwhirl: 89% Pikachu: 43% Bulbasur: 1%
Oh man, I had the full set of the pokemon office supplies! I completely forgot about them lol. I probably spent several hours just using them as action figures. I should ask my parents about them, there's a solid chance they're in their attic.
To this day, I dunno why the Pikachu staple toy used Bite with his back or the measuring tape Poliwhirl's Water Gun could tie up the opponent, but that's how I played with em.
I also had them
reginald didnt die
Wasn't poliwhirl and early consideration for the mascot? (or maybe just one of Red's first pokemon?) And that's why there is a lot of poliwhirl merch?
Bulbasaur should have been the tape measure because of his vines
17:20 *Magneton spinning…* Meanwhile Ninjago music playing: Jump up kick back whip around and SPIN!
I legit thought someone was knocking on my window
I think Poliwhirl was in the running to be the mascot or one of the mascots for Pokémon, so they made a whole bunch of stuff for it just in case.
Awww I remember those pokemon spinning tops! I got the pikachu one from a cereal box prize! As for the polywhirl jelly jar (yes it used to have jelly inside it!) they're collectibles! My dad has the whole set :D
I found one of those reversible Pokeball plushies thrifting once and nearly lost my damn mind. It's a Lickitung and I love it very much.
4:13 Seeing the poliwhirl pokeball plushie just unlocked a hidden memory when I had the Phanpy one as a kid
Hey, a Pokemon Welch's jar! My parents got me one in stores WAAAAAAY back when I was just a kid! Mine was a Clefairy one, and yes, they did have jam in them! I don't have the lid anymore, either, which seems like it's the case for this jar, too. Man, this video is such a blast from the past... I actually had more of these than I expected! BTW, I think the Lickitung is more cursed. The Froakie one makes me imagine they're in a little mech suit, which I think is fun, Thanks for the fun watch!
My grandpa had a few of those jelly jars, we always used them as drinking glasses. Seeing them again really takes me back.
I had a bunch of this merch growing up (and probably still do somewhere), including the Poliwhirl tape measure, which I remember liking a lot.
I think Poliwhirl was pushed so much because in Japan Poliwhirl was one of the main Pokemon in the manga. It was popular over there so they tried to push it over here too. It stuck with some of us Gen 1ers, but past that didn't really do much lol I still love Poliwhirl!!
God there's a lot of things I remember collecting as a kid. The Pokemon stationary was part of my collection. There's so many things I missed.
My God. I had so many of these as a kid. I had the bulbasaur pencil sharpener, tangela beyblade, etc. I was expecting more "out of the world" stuff, not my childhood. Rip tangela for being left out lmao.
John: "WhY iS eVeRyThInG I gEt PoLiWhIrL?! The Chansey and all the other different Pokemon: are we jokes too you or are we just invisible?!
That Froakie made me laugh in a way I've never done before.
I was so surprised when you opened up the I Choose You Pikachu only because I still have mine from way back when and it just made so many memories come back. It's one of maybe three early childhood stuffed animals I still have. It lasts a long time too, mine still has a working voice box even though the cheeks no longer light up
I need to check mine now to see if it still works. It’s currently sitting among a plethora of plushies on the top shelf of my closet
I had no idea they did a rerelease. I had the OG one as a kid and bought a sealed one during shutdown.
I’ve always loved poliwhirl so this was a really cool video, the tape measure absolutely is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen
16:00 BRO, I HAVE THAT ONE AND HAD IT SINCE A KID!!! It was my favourite plush when I was a kid. I think that mine is not working anymore though.
man this is such a nostalgia trip - i had so much of these as a kid!
This was too funny but also super nostalgic! I had that stationary set as a kid, bulbasaur pencil sharpener included... It was the worst pencil sharpener but I sure thought it was cool!
1:24 Oh! I actually had those as a kid! I didn't know a thing about Pokemon at the time, but they used to belong to my older cousin and were given to me at some point. They didn’t work great as actual stationery (the Poliwhirl measuring tape broke really quickly and the Pikachu stapler was hard to use) so I basically used them as action figures, especially the Bulbasaur pencil sharpener. Hopefully they're still somewhere in the house. I'd love to find those again.
14:03 Ok... Now I'm hearing Oh from Home when he says "Why". Man could do impressions
So many of those old pokemon toys bring back memories, but nothing beats the gold cards. They always made me feel rich as a kid
I bought so much cereal I didn't want to get those tops as a kid. Total nostalgia bomb
Besides the Pikachu, those tops were from burger king
12:21 when watching the scene, I accidentally rewind it to the whopper seen and died laughing
Just read the first Arc of the pokemon Adventures manga to truly appreciate poliwhirl. That was Red’s first pokemon in the official manga. That might be why there’s so much merch of him.
John did a Purplecliffe video but instead of his editors stealing his credit card and buying random stuff, John buys weird official pokemon products. Care to do a part 2 john?
Ah I used to collect those pokeball keychains a ton as a kid! Love all the Poliwhirl merch I’m sure ace trainer Liam would be happy about it. I also have that poliwhirl plush! Found it at a goodwill and it was the only Pokémon thing I ever found. I recently re bought the talking pikachu for nostalgia.
I had that same poliwhirl plush when I was little. I still have it and it’s so old, that one of it’s eyes have turned yellow. I also have one of those Pikachu plushies…I found it at an antique store.
A trip down memory lane with all my old toys. I definitely forgot how much Poliwhirl merch was available back in the 90's lmao.
Ok but why was that magnemite sooo THICK (not in a weird way)
He a round boi
OMG This video brought me down memory lane! I had so many of these products myself as a little child that I had completely forgotten. Now I wish I could go back to my childhood home and retrieve them!
So if anyone is sad about the slowpoke tail at 12:15 just know that in pokemon lore, slowpoke loose and regrow their tail naturally :) so no harm is done to the slowpokes :)
10:07 I had the pikachu one as a kid 😁 lost in a long time ago though…
That sucks
We’ve really entered the magnemite Meta, haven’t we?
14:15 That's a MandJTV Tounge SFX. XD
Hearing John sound so distraught at 84 pieces is funny. Like, do not show this man some those crazy sets with thousands of pieces!
6:10 that froakie reminds me of Frobo from Amphibia
Was excited for a video like this after seeing cliffe’s vids like this. Thanks for the vid John! 😁
You should do a Gen 1 playthrough where the pokepull pack thingies decide your team
I always love content involving mystery packs with John because he gets so into it, no matter what it is.
That's an awesome idea!
Only problem would be getting enough of them
My favorite items out of the Burger King Pokemon toys that released along with those tops were the keychains. I still use the Sandslash one even now
I never heard the Burger King whopper jingle, “please Sara let me see the kids” made me laugh. Damn that was funny
Now John knows how Jack feels.
2:57 "I dont have a pool and I have an inflatable that is the same size as me, youll see me using it" I uh... In a different context that could mean something entirely different.
I had so many of these, the gold poliwhirl card, the poliwhirl water toy, the pokeball that turned into poliwhirl... Yeah a whole lot of poliwhirl stuff was about in the early 2000s 😂 i wasnt specifically into poliwhril or anything lol
I had a few of those pokeball zip toys. I had Chansey, Lickitung and a Togepi that would zip into its egg instead! Also, the Poliwhirl plush, I literally still have that exact one! :D
I love this video and would love to see more like it in the future it’s fun to see things (some I remember for child but most I don’t) from the Pokémon company that look so fun but I don’t really have the budget to buy myself thanks for letting me see these things with you
7:19 buddy got pollywhirled🙃
😢
YOOO John I totally had those pokemon glasses as a kid!! I think we had like 5 different ones. Seeing that thing just unlocked a freakin sense memory I stg
My LGS had a bunch of those flip pokemon/pokeballs a bit ago and made sure to pick up a few because not only are they made by TOMY, a toy brand that makes some of the highest quality Pokémon plushies today. But also because of the massive inconsistency between the same pokemon. They were very clearly handmade and because of how cursed some of them are, is just a gem. Edit: They also have a master ball variant
2:53 I’m having flashbacks to the Metronome Nuzlocke with MandJTV🤣
17:20 "Ah, I see you are a man of culture as well"
Ninjago is my whole childhood brought back so many memories
Ninjago
Favourite John quote ever "oh you're doing crime? Boom! Crime over"
I think I had that pikachu stapler as a kid, but the memory is super hazy. I also had some kind of rubber pikachu keychain... I definitely had one of those pokemon beyblade-like toys; I think they were from Burger King. Also, that Welch's Polywhirl cup was part of a series. They sold grape jam in several glass cups with pokemon designs on them--I had one with Clefairy and used it for years.
Had like three or four of those Gold Plated cards, my Mom bought them for me. Remember Pokemon nights at Burger King my mom would take me to those sometimes when I asked. Traded the happy meal toys and cards too with other kids.
OMG I have the gold-plated Pokemon card of Mewtwo. Makes me wonder what they're worth
It was always weird to me having them sell Slowpoke tales at restaurants in Alola.
also for some reason the pikachu top is one of the FEW tops from that line that were VERYYYY lightweight and plastic and didn't have a heavy base like most of the others. ...actually wait i think it's from a gen 2 lineup, bc i have both that and hoothoot's. they were from cereal boxes, while the heavier ones were from the insane amount burger king released right before the first movie
I had that Poliwhirl cup since I was a kid! It was a jam jar. I still to this day use it, only it’s usually when I’m giving my son juice nowadays 😊
