I swear, when you consider how often McCoy is on the bridge instead of the ship's medical bay/infirmary/his office, the only logical explanation is that Kirk would deliberately summon McCoy to the bridge whenever he had the chance just so that he could be amused by his and Spock's bantering. This is my head-canon.
Could also be that Kirk just thinks that McCoy offers sound advice that runs counter to Spock and it allows him to develop a balanced view of a given situation between the two of them.
@@invidatauro8922 Well that is how the trio’s dynamic is supposed to work. Spock is pure logic, McCoy is passion and humanity, Kirk is the balance.

Its really just a practical concern for making the show I like how in the reboot it makes the Enterprise feel REALLY big and full of people Bones, as the head doctor, probably doesnt actually need to be there. There would be other doctors under him that can take care of simple booboos
In terms of the Trek universe Bones is also - technically - a consular as well as a Doctor In charge of both physical and mental health - and the mental (as well as physical) health of the captain would be a big concern for him

Better than I like you. Spock: Doctor, they do indeed have one redeeming characteristic. McCoy: What's that? Spock: They do not talk too much.

For all the times McCoy argued with Spock and insulted him, the second anybody else decided to, McCoy didn't stand for any of it. When push came to shove, they had each others' backs.

That's because the banter was one of true friends teasing each other. Only true friends get to do that without consequence.
Spock and McCoy argue the way only the best of friends can.
Right? It's the same with Martin and Pam on Martin. They clowned each other all day but if someone else tried to they had each other's backs.

The other one I like is when Spock says "I made an error in my calculations." McCoy says "Oh? This could be a historic occasion."

why is kirk not in the afterlife? Both of them lived until the time of Star Trek Next Generation while Kirk died nearly a century earlier.

The show is almost 60 years old and it’s still great. The stories and the acting are just timeless.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that there is something Shakespearean about the relationship of these characters. Great writing. I guess that's why this show spawned so many multi-million dollar sequels and cost the corporate morons a boatload of cash.

@@nathanielschwartz425 Complex, dramatic, comedic. Pretty much everything you would want to watch if you were a sentient human being. That's what Shakespeare did, and most of us love him for his brilliant understanding of these concepts. I hope this answers/ satisfies your question.

I'm Sorry' Spock replies with a faint smile 'If the Captain were here I'm sure he would say Forget it, Bones'. McCoy added 'another thing ...do you recall that time in the mountains were Jim said he'd die alone?' Scotty grins wickedly. 'Well...We're dead Jim!' Its hard to make a Vulcan crack up laughing...
Bar none one of the best developed and most wonderfully dynamic friendships in the history of fiction, of any kind. RIP Leonard Nimoy, DeForrest Kelly.

The way Spock, a touch-telepath, tenderly holds Bones' hands in those scenes always got me 🧡

Got to love that line in Star Trek 3 when Kirk explains to McCoy he's suffering from a Vulcan mind meld. "That green-blooded son of a bitch!" "It's his revenge for all those arguments he lost!"

@@ThekiBoran Hey, now, Spock didn't say he never drinks alcohol. He's just naturally resistant to its "dubious benefits". In this case, what's he's really saying to McCoy is, "Can the bullshit, this is serious."
Another good part of that scene is how it puts the lie to the pop-culture idea of Kirk, presented on this show as a rigorous captain with a logical mind. As Kirk's best friend, Spock knows he's no tail-chaser, that in the case of a beautiful woman, Kirk is more like Spock than he is like McCoy.
The difference of Nimoy's spock and all other vulcans in star trek is that all others are monotone to show no emotions.. Spock wasn't. It is amazing how Nimoy nail it that no one else did

I would offer the suggestion that the difference is because all the others were attempting to recreate what Leonard Nimoy did, in many cases after having their role shoehorned into the show, no matter how out of place they may have been. Instead of creating their own take, if you will, on being Vulcan, they either tried to out-Vulcan him, or they tried to copy him. Also, Vulcans were not devoid of emotions - instead, they had mastered them. That was a bit of canon often overlooked. Spock's human half made it harder for him to control them as easily, but Vulcans had them.
I love how Spock can show emotion with little facial muscular work like he has his own body language and face expressions ,at first I thought Spock never showed emotion but now I can read him , like the way he raises his eyebrows is diffrent each time
Leonard nimoy was such an amazing actor
i will say, t'pol (i can't remember the actress' name off the top of my head) from enterprise did a really good job as well.
I read somewhere that in one episode i don't know which one, Nimoy was leaning over Kelly and Kelly raised up and kissed Nimoy on the nose. At first, Nimoy was startled then busted up laughing. For the rest of the day when they tried to reshoot the scene whenever Nimoy or Kelly got close to one another one or both of them would crack up laughing. Finally the director gave up and called it a day.

Beyond the original series was Shatner and Nimoys budding friendship. This is much focused on in the more recent times, then backword toward the original series again. It shouldn't be forgotten that it was these 3 who made the core of Star Trek interesting. I think it was McCoys banter that actually helped to illuminate Leonards Vulcan persona.

@@brookerichard6260 Leonard Nimoy was very much "immersed" into the role at that time. Walter Koenig (Chekov) says that he mostly got to see Spock than Leonard, because the actor was keeping the role even when the camera was off. Something similar was mentioned by Nimoy's son.
That was a nice subtle touch on the shoulder Spock gave McCoy when asking for an atmosphere analysis. Try as he may, his human side unwittingly shines through with McCoy. He also doesn't want to admit he's nervous about being in command.

For me, Spock McCoy going at was next part of the show.
I can't help but think that all the writers basically wrote the Spock - McCoy bits first and then tried to make a story around it. :)

I loved that they included Admiral McCoy for that little scene. The two of them had a good chemistry and Data had a very deep respect for him. It's a pity they didn't include him in another scene during the pilot. I would have loved seeing him giving some advice to Picard and Dr. Crusher.
I always wondered if Data was just being polite, or he actually agreed with doctor. If it was any other crew member, I'd say former for sure, but Data has unusual talent to state observable truths when anyone else would rather say nothing.

Happy 100th birthday to DeForest Kelley (1920-1999). I still find it so amazing that so many fans became doctors thanks to his performance and who possibly forget his amazing chemistry with co-stars Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. Happy birthday doctor.

@@barb7124 in one case he's a tool of the state and useful, in the other he's disturbing the order and usurping the state's monopoly on violence.
I love how, from 3:08 to 3:22, Dr. McCoy sticks up for Spock; he called out Capt. Kirk for questioning Spock's integrity. He also took Spock's side from 4:50 to 5:20 when discussing the log book; McCoy reminded Jim that Spock was doing his job as he should have.
This video has been my constant companion for sleepless nights. Leonard Nimoy's voice is very calming...

I love their love-hate relationship SO much. Whether they admit to that description or not.
How much would you have to trust a person to deposit your consciousness and soul into him? While Kirk would have doubtlessly have been Spock’s first choice, the fact that Spock trusted McCoy enough to share that much of himself with the doctor says everything about this unique relationship. Thanks to Nimoy and De Kelley and also to Quinto and Urban for furthering its development.

As a child, I connected heavily with Spock. I had an aggressive and emotional side, and I had a gentle and more reserved side. Then I found out I had Bipolar Disorder, which explained my emotional outbursts. I have control of myself now, but it's still like being split in two halves.

I should like to point out that Merikus, Captain Merrik there in that episode, is actor William Smithers as he along with Morgan Woodward and actress Susan Howard from the third season episode of Star Trek, Day Of The Dove were also on the tv evening soap opera show, Dallas.

There are many reasons this show was great and very ahead of its time.....The banter between Spock and Mcoy was but one of them.
The chemistry with the three characters and the rest of the cast was wonderful.
One of my favorite on-screen relationships.

The friends that argue are the ones who care. I love their friendship.
One of the more interesting relationships because they were both playing second fiddle to Shatner. It's rare to get a good supporting cast relationship right. But then all of the final lineup was quite strong, Scotty, Uhura, Chekhov, Sulu, all had well developed characters.
As much fun as it is to watch them bicker, it makes the moments when they do stick up for or help each other out all the more poignant. For all the back and forth it shows they do, ultimately, respect each other's skills and talents and count each other as friends. :)

It has been 20 years or more since I last watched all of the original Star Trek episodes, and I had forgotten how important to the TOS' attractiveness the Spock-McCoy relationship was -- perhaps more than either of the characters' relationships with Kirk. If Kirk was the glue that held the ensemble cast together, Spock and McCoy were a huge part of its charm.

Creator Gene Roddenberry, while watching the constant confrontation between ole Doc Adams and Festus on Gunsmoke, always thought it humourous, and therefore included that very same humor in his own show, The Originsl Star Trek Series, a series to in which I am an avid fan of.
At the beginning of this clip, Spock reminded me so much of Zachary Quinto's performance. I'm not preferring one actor to the other, here; it's just a testament to the skills of the guy. He obviously did his homework.
Didn't Zachary watch all the "STOS" episodes?
The only person who came close to that level of "Vulcanism" was Mark Lenard, who played Spock's father. You can see the underlying emotion in him as well, especially in the Star Trek movies.
@menckencynic That's because nobody's ever gonna be Nimoy. Sometimes when an actor owns a role so completely anyone else trying to repeat that magic fails because their interpretation no matter if good pales in comparison. Spock's the type of role that one person defined perfectly that can't be replicated same with Data, Archie Bunker, Edith Bunker, George Jefferson, EMH aka The Doctor, Seven of Nine, Al Bundy, Columbo, Fonzie, Steve Urkel etc.
@menckencynic Well I take it that other actors just don't get the character of Spock or Vulcans in general. Nimoy is the only one who truly got it I suppose.
Quinto worked closely with Nimoy and didn't want to disappoint him. It's not my Spock but he's not a bad Spock.

the scene from Miri (2:38) is just so... tender. sweet. despite the jabs, they care so much about each other.
NOT to mention the fact that in the episode he sat like that for a while, just... holding his hands. it’s so sweet and endearing.

My favorite part 10:01. Spock is standing there with his hands behind his back, staring straight ahead. Bones "Shouldn't you be working on your time warp calculations Mr Spock???" Spock "I am" LMAO!! I wish I could be like him...
This ongoing back and forth is one of the key elements of this series that continues to distinguish it, to this day.
Spock and McCoy may have disliked each other, but they did greatly respect each other. And out of that respect, they became friends.
The best arguments, disagreements and banter any two great characters and actors can have in movie history! Let alone Star Trek History! Their discussions/Banters will live on! Miss them LM and DK. May they Live Long and Prosper wherever they are!

I love how, as much as Bones and Spock like to take the mickey out of each other....Bones will still defend Spock when the need arises.
The best part is when they stick up for the other. At face value it looks like they barely tolerate each other, but in reality they'd jump on a grenade for the other.

The secret of why good Star Trek is good. People you like being funny and clever and warm and thoughtful to each other and making you like them even more. Sometimes, on occasion, a ship might explode or something. But nothing can stop the BANTER.

This is wonderful, thanks for uploading this. Spock and Mccoy's relationship is one of my favourite things about the show. All the hilarious bitchiness and the friction, while they both still obviously cared about and respected each other too. I'm hoping part 1 means there will be a part 2 ;)
Amazing how none of this sparring between these characters was Gene Roddenberry's idea. That was Roddenberry's true genius, in a way: bringing smart people together to come up with ideas he couldn't.
