The thing I adore about DM’s songs is that, while most of them have this “dark” concept and they touch serious emotional topics, it never feels depressing. Like, i always get this feeling that with the darkness, also comes strength, hope, glimpse of light. It’s truly empowering if you think about it.

I was twelve years old, living with my grandma in the family home in Pisa, Italy; their version of VH1 was on the television, and THIS song comes on..... Immediately I was entranced by the haunting beauty of this music.... Had never heard anything like it, and would eagerly await the moment they would play the music video again. Roughly a year later I managed to get my hands on the album proper, and my Depeche Mode journey began in earnest. Thanks DM. Stay strong.

There are 7 "ugly" guys in the video, and every of them represent one of 7 deadly sins. It is seen who is who by their acting: 1. The tall guy on 3:38 and on 4:06 is *Pride* . He always looks from the top on others, with scorn and selfish smirk. Wearing black cloth, which admits his high status. 2. The guy on the right on 2:09 and 4:14 is *Greed* . He looks on everyone with suspicion, like everyone want to steal from him. He's two times captured with Envy. 3. Guy on 0:58 on the right and 3:41 is *Glutony* , cuz he's fat u know. 4. Guy on 0:58 on the left is apparently *Sloth* , because he's very thin which means he doesn't work and lazy. He's captured next to Glutony, apparently having something in common (laziness, inability to work). 5. Little guys on 1:46, 3:38 and on 2:09, 4:14 are *Envy* . Not sure why there are two Envys. They're always sad, eyes down, and jealous, because they're little, having inferiority complex. Its also interesting that one is captured next to Greedy and other next to Pride guy. One is jealous of Greedy guy's richness and other of Pride's high status. 6. Small fat guy on 0:54 and 1:51 is *Anger* probably. He looks pretty evil and creepy. He's captured alone. I don't see anyone fit in Anger more than him. 7. The guy on 3:54 probably *Lust* . Very insidious look. Don't see anyone who would fit in Lust more than him too. The main couple characters apparently are priests, but they fall to the sins, and remain in hell with the sins (3:26). Have no clue what these bird masks mean, however.

the face of the birds resembles a mask that the "Untori" wore according to the popular Italian tradition: they, during the periods of plague, anointed the walls, the benches and in general the frequented places in the city so that the virus can spread very much faster. in the video they might represent carriers of trouble, of something evil, of darkness, of death.

This is Depeche Mode and Alan at its best. This is not just a song, it's an art and should be displayed in a Museum in New York, or Paris. After Dave's OD that he barely survived, DM took a sharp turn both musically and mentally, then Alan quit the band. Live drums, piano parts, string arrangements, they are all in harmony with Dave's voice and Martin's lyrics. I have seen two concerts from this tour in Honolulu, and they were two days in a row. After this, I have graduated from DM academy because this was it. I like the album where the late Mark Bell produced (R.I.P.) but the "Songs of Faith and Devotion" album is a masterpiece and DM had never made another one like this. By the way, I have never liked DM music videos, including this one. But watching them live is a privilege. Thank you DM and thank you Alan.

It's well made, but some of the images don't make sense, like the band members pressing their faces against the glass. I also wonder how people felt about a priest and a nun in a relationship. Of course, this priest looked like an Eastern Orthodox priest, and they do marry, but the nuns don't, so I would see that as a problem.

Agree. It's really about being cornered by what you do, by being different and how society makes assumptions upon "different" people. Both the lyrics and the wonderful video direction by Corbijn reinforce this. The powerful harmonies are underlining visuals that take the "devilish" Bosch imaginary and turns it into a show of the human condition. Try walk in my shoes, if you know how to be me. Just try it.

@@danielsr8226 all good reasons. And I would like to add, plenty of bands came and went that sounded like The Beatles, NO ONE sounds like DM.

Duran Duran & Depeche Mode
Они уже есть величайшая группа
The thing I adore about DM’s songs is that, while most of them have this “dark” concept and they touch serious emotional topics, it never feels depressing. Like, i always get this feeling that with the darkness, also comes strength, hope, glimpse of light. It’s truly empowering if you think about it.
Thats`s true
I have to agree. I recently turned 30 and somehow Depeche Mode's music just "speaks" to me right now. I always liked them but now it's just whole different level. Maybe it's because at this stage of my life I saw and experienced a lot of negative things but also good ones and DM conveys my feelings so well

I like your amazement, felt same when I 1st saw Queen on tv performing Bohemian Rhapsody. It's sort of how is this possible. This song helped me see others don't always see your point of view, no matter how hard you try to talk to them. "It's no good" is my 2nd fav because of the video, so different to this.
same here, was living with grandparents, they were playing cards with family and i put this record on cd on. it was magic, i remember playing this second track on and on and fell in love with everything around this band.
They were underrated. I live the 80s and I can assure you, Depeche Mode was extremely HIDDEN. The only song of their's I rememeber is "People are People." They were hidden by the media because most of their stuff didn't fit their agenda of current brainswashing. Wake folks, you have been duped.

That's laughable! Chino Marino will not be selling out stadiums world wide, grossing over 250 million on a world 37 years after he began. Depeche Mode's latest tour, 37 years into their career, broke records all over the world. Chino Marino will never sell out 4 nights at The Hollywood Bowl, even Tom Petty or The Stones have been able to do that. So, you're wrong!
They did a fantastic job of giving this video the air of Hieronymus Bosch.

Manol Momchilov yea but only smart people get to appreciate them and that's cool with me I get it and agree completely the entire premise is beautiful like people never see how awesome a person's heart really is and how much love and pure intention and how much investment and suffering they've put into people and like then let's say they get all wasted one night one day of their life and people want to be the judge jury and executioner and try to erase all the humanity and goodness away from that person and in my mind that's way worse than stealing by a long shot and now that I'm older I get now why my home boy Jesus was like stfu let me decide if they deserve to be critiqued bitch 💭
star child i like the way you think
The genius of Anton Corbijn combined with the concept that Depeche Mode had created for Songs of Love and Devotion resulted in a true masterpiece
People often do not understand, why do I love DM so much. Saying its depressive. Not that I needed to explain it so much, but even when I try, I simply cannot. I feel like I cannot explain the feeling I get when listening to their music with any existing term. Its goosebumps, mystery and understanding both at once. Like the feeling you get when praying:-) Not depressive at all. Just stripped feeling of being alive. This all mixed with sexual tension. How can anyone say its depressive?:-D
well said...depeche mode are the greatest. Its the sound of magic which fills my soul with joy and happiness.
Skadi the Beast Sometimes you fall in love with an Artist for different reasons. I love Daughter because of Elena's voice, Placebo for the darkness of their material and Brian's voice and Depeche Mode and Rush because of their refusal to play the same style/sound of music every year. DM are vastly superior than they were in the 1980's.
Skadi the Beast
Tell them that they have 4 decades of incredible song. And then show them their video with chicken from the beginning if 80s. They have come long way from their first albums. Everything Counts is still my morning power song sometimes. They are good.
Skadi the Beast its depressive
One of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard.
Powerful, haunting, deeply meaningful... Words cant't describe how i feel about this song.
Same for me. Volcano of emotions
Broken is up there too, in the top few at least.
This song will always bring out these buried tears I kept inside for too long
Дикая смесь депресняка и энергии, уже лет 20 их слушаю, как будто в первый раз, всем здоровья и добра
может не твое)
А может и не твоё тоже
Да, он гениальн тем, что не надоедает, но клип это треш
Сила в депрессии
The voice of Dave Gahan is littery a superpower. He is not human.
He gave all of himself...even if He didn't wrote the song, it was like he did...He took it to him

Depeche Mode
From the bottom of my heart, I will miss you so very much, Andy. Thank you for the beautiful soundtrack to my youth.
My favorite Depeche Moder. So heartbroken.
@@bh8199 Agreed.
R.I.P Andy Fletcher, such a genius keyboardist
If you told me that this music video was directed by Ingmar Bergman with the help of David Lynch and Arturo Ripstein, I would easily believe it. A masterpiece.
Depeche Mode forever. Legendary Depeche Mode is the best of British bands.
The best band of the world.
I would recommend reading Dan Brown's book "Inferno", it explains the mystery of the Bird Masks in an exciting way :)
the face of the birds resembles a mask that the "Untori" wore according to the popular Italian tradition: they, during the periods of plague, anointed the walls, the benches and in general the frequented places in the city so that the virus can spread very much faster. in the video they might represent carriers of trouble, of something evil, of darkness, of death.
Would like to point out that the "Anger" guy is actually Wrath, which is the official name to that character from the 7 Deadly Sins
thanks for all the info! very useful
Best comment ever. Thx SO MUCH!!! Masterpiece 💜 DEVOTEE 🇭🇺
Thank you for everything, Fletch. from the background, you were and will always be a vital part of millions of lives.
I bet when this came out all of the Depeche Mode fans back then were in shock. Totally different from everything they put out before. A stunning tune from an absolutely amazing record that brought an astounding tour. Cheers best band in the world.
I Feel You was released first and the whole album was out before this one was released as a single
i wish there were more bands like Depeche Mode. imagine it, the world would be quite a better place.
+Russell Gordon Maybe, but we wouldn't appreciate it this much. Part of what makes it so great is that it is unique.

Martin Gore's chord progressions are pure genius. His best songs are built on those synth/guitar riffs that he takes up and up and up until they soar at epic levels (Never let me down)
Yesssss
a real guitar hero that MLG
Lyrics: I would tell you about the things they put me through The pain I've been subjected to But the Lord himself would blush The countless feasts laid at my feet Forbidden fruits for me to eat But I think your pulse would start to rush Now I'm not looking for absolution Forgiveness for the things I do But before you come to any conclusions Try walking in my shoes Try walking in my shoes You'll stumble in my footsteps Keep the same appointments I kept If you try walking in my shoes If you try walking in my shoes Morality would frown upon Decency look down upon The scapegoat fate's made of me But I promise now, my judge and jurors My intentions couldn't have been purer My case is easy to see I'm not looking for a clearer conscience Peace of mind after what I've been through And before we talk of any repentance Try walking in my shoes Try walking in my shoes You'll stumble in my footsteps Keep the same appointments I kept If you try walking in my shoes If you try walking in my shoes Try walking in my shoes Now I'm not looking for absolution Forgiveness for the things I do But before you come to any conclusions Try walking in my shoes Try walking in my shoes You'll stumble in my footsteps Keep the same appointments I kept If you try walking in my shoes You'll stumble in my footsteps Keep the same appointments I kept If you try walking in my shoes Try walking in my shoes If you try walking in my shoes Try walking in my shoes

still probably my all-time favorite Depeche Mode song
Same. The song is 27 years old and still sounds modern. It has passed the test of time.
Masterpiece ❤️
Amber rooms. Bernstein, das gold der Ost see.
Bono Vox also thing the same...
Halo is mine 🙂
Alan Wilder and Flood's production on this record along with Anton's artwork, is a thing of legends.
I couldn't agree more. Still hoping for another collaboration
I was obsessed with this video back in 1993. One of the best ever made--very artistic. It also fit with the books I was reading at that time.
Hi..what books?
@@sebastiansanchez3475 The Italian by Anne Radcliffe, Narcissus and Goldmund, learning about Abelard and Heloise in class
@@revacohenI take the priest and nun as darkness and forbidden. And the faces on the glass as distortion. The song is very dark in general. It’s my fav of DP

my condolences to the family of Andy Fletcher and his Depeche Mode family. May the Lord grant him eternal rest. 🙏

Dang when i first listened to Depeche mode you you weren't even a sperm seed yet lol
DM forever and ever! RIP Fletch😢❤
This song is the actual story of my life. Did anyone notice the road leading to Transylvania? A beautiful touch ❤🖤🔥
I think it is the hell

Released 28 years ago today and for 28 years now, Walking in my Shoes has been my favourite song. Marvelous then, marvelous now.
The band helped many teenagers to survive in this cruel world. Respect and love you forever! Your loyal fan ❤️
This album was one of a few that saved my life them.
This was probably my favorite album it's so dark and raw..even though Dave was struggling with heavy drug use.. it shows in the music. That's what makes it all so powerful.
Cheers to drug use.
One of the most beautiful songs ever, always brings tears to my eyes...
+bystra2248 same as me... and goosbumps ;-)

Everybody feels the same . we are all so different but all so equal. pitty we feel all the time alone
Good point ! Just watching again after your laat message.
Greatest band ever.
AGREED. Forever will be for me my favorite band.
The pressure on Depeche Mode in 1992 to make a follow up album to a Violator was massive and Depeche Mode delivered their third masterpiece 👌🏽🌹
There are so many great Songs from Depeche Mode, but Walking in my Shoes is the Masterpiece. Sounds. Lyrics.. everything is perfect. It touch my Soul.
No doubt. I’m 57 years young & this rocks🤘👊☠️👍🎶🎶🎶
I cannot describe how big is this band and how much they influenced me since 1989. So unreal and so real at same time. Really miss those days.
So true 💯
Still listening in 2019, and we will listen it always. It's Eternal masterpiece! Thank you Depeche Mode!
Thank you DM even my son she has 15 years love it .

Me too one of my favourite bands, never get tired of them
Me too my favourite band still
Yay
I think this might be their best song. It's just perfect.
Best song (and music video) Depeche Mode ever did, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to seeing them again live at Madison Square Garden in April!
Great song! Best video IMO isn’t my favorite song but the video for Everything Counts in Pasadena. Wow
How can this video have 1.6k dislikes? Too many despacito fans out there. This is one of the most powerful, meaningful songs of all time gone and to come.
Magnifique
People are getting dumber, that’s why.
I think people have become numb and cold
They meant dis I like
DM haters just emphasizing band's actual glory
This entire song is so haunting and pervasive for me. I can't explain why the closing shots of the two hooded figures skating is just so memorable and impressive to me. It's something I can never get outta my head.
They seem to be a nun and a priest who aren’t allowed to live their romance together
Before we head in to 2023 .. I'm still loving Depeche mode... It's still my go to music .
Считаю этот сингл самым лучшим во всей дискографии Depeche Mode. Эта музыка реально будет вечна. 👍👍👍
Думаю что первая композиция 1987 ....

Sleep well, Fletch...you were a lovely guy by all accounts and an integral part of "my" band. RIP Sir 💔🥺😢🥰
sooo sad :(
Aleksei Navalnyi was a man, who was really "walking in my shoes". Trying to walk in his shoes is going to lead most of us to state of devastation or useless being. R.I.P. real hero!
Who else thinks Martin Gore is a criminally underrated songwriter?

Yup, the entire band it's immaculaty balance
Oh yes 👍😉🎶🇨🇭🎧
The best!
Man every song seems like the perfect song Until you listen to another one by them. Endless hits
That's the point, isn't it? They are writing the story of their/our lives. We grew up with them. Now in my late 40es I can honestly say: thank you for the music you brought into my life. Without it I wouldn't be the person I am. Every single album is relevant, just remember the last one, Where's the bloody revollution? Look what we did and still do to each other and the planet. Oh Martin, your genious is so underated....And Dave, your voice gives people life....
I don’t know what it is about Depeche Mode that’s made me love them at an astronomical level. Is it the music? Their voices? Their lyrics? Their videos? Their form of artistic expression? I’d say it’s “All of the above.”
Exactly!
It all adds up to the magic that this band exudes.
It's frankly celestial beyond normal comprehension. They're talking about significantly more than it initially appears, in such a way that through your whole development as a mind, heart, and soul unlocks itself like a divine puzzle, culminating in nothing short of cosmic realignment toward restoration. In the words of the great Lebowski - Fucking A
RIP Andy Fletcher (1961-2022) ❤️
They really got a flattering shot of me! I'm glad.
WTF😂😂😂😂
Indeed! Honestly, it made me question my heterosexuality....

And again like countless times for over 20 years now i cry when i listen to this song...and other songs of Faith and Devotion...before the 2000 millenium i lost my girlfriend Heike, i was 15 and she was my heart and soul. One of the finest tracks ever written...genius at work Mr Martin L Gore
One of the greatest songs ever!
Every time I was told that I did NOT have any issues or problems is my life, I think of this song and hope that people one day have to see what is is like to walk in another person's shoes. One of the many reasons I do my best NOT to be a hypocrite or or judge anyone harshly is this song.
This is a real message to all those who are always telling others what to do and believe. People talk about empathy in all possible occasions, but what do they know... Most of the times it's just meaningless words.
This song is an absolute masterpiece 🖤
The last post is why it's knot money it's Family,DE MODE is old school, everyday ❤
The intro to this song is just so amazing. 🖤
What an amazing soul Dave Gahan is! He emotes pain, regret, and a raw sexuality that is unmatched. And a very cool guy; he was a regular at the restaurant I worked in back in the late 90's.
Devotees get it but so many people do not realise just how good and how relevant DM lyrics are. Respected within the industry but so underrated by the great unwashed. For me they are simply untouchable as the greatest band in history.
This video is a moving, breathing Renaissance painting :)
101 Liker 💙😀👍
Yeah but then compare them to dead can dance, and realize that they are even more untouchable...
All I have is there will never be a band like Depeche Mode. Ever. They make amazing albums being different and unique yet it has that DM feel to it.
I Completely Agree! Genius!!! 🖤🤍🖤
"Songs of Faith and Devotion" and "Ultra" are my favourite records.
Always loved this song. Even as a 15 year old the lyrics meant alot to me.
Same!! 30 years on DM still hit home and help clear my head my soul and my heart
This song is good and meaningful, it shows the story of everyone and the judgements that people throw at you, also it's a good response "Try walking in my shoes"
It's my favorite album of DM, and, in my opinion, their best.
