ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto interviews lightweight champion Islam Makhachev ahead of his title rematch at UFC 294 against Charles Oliveira.   • In Makhachev vs Volk... i was of the opinion of 3-2 until i watched the fight in 0.5x and audio mute. I was surprised that Makhachev won not only the round no. 1, 2 & 4 but also 3, round 3 was the most competitive round which in 1 gothrough nobodie's vision can catch. you have to see it in slo mo. Makhachev just did it enough to win that round. knees, then a good kick, nice straight left which even volk acknowledged. I recommend you to watch the fight in 0.5x and mute the audio.

If Islam would go up to 170 and lose it would be the same thing. I think realistically gaethje/Islam should fight next. He deserves a title shot. After that 3rd defense Islam goes up to 170 for the double belt.

  • I don't think its an excuse that Islam wasn't fully recovered during the Volk fight, I was more of a Volk fan but Islam didn't look as good as he did in the Charles fight and I'm talking about health and how he looked in terms of appearance, he looked kinda dehydrated and even a bit frail in my opinion

    • I'm a fan of Islam, but the thing is he actually underestimated Volk. Dehydration isn't everything. It's not something he got to know about 2 days before. He should've better dropped some pounds earlier. But I fail to understand what people are about when they give the fight to Volk when Islam won 3 rounds clearly and in fact a good case for 4th one too.

    • other than massive legacy points... volk is what, 23-1 or something? thats big street cred in itself and that isnt even including charles into the equation. theres definitely a plus to fighting volk again.. but imo it comes at quite a big risk cuz volk is one of the smarter fighters that has fought in the ufc and him and his team could put together a pretty formidable gameplan if they squared off again.

    • Makhachev is a smart dude.. just look at the way he grapples. He’s multiple steps ahead of his opponents. What about distance management and timing? Only smart fighters can play defensive and countering game at that level.. If anybody wants to win against Makhachev, they have to come with a very clever game plan. For these high level fights, strategy plays a bigger role - as they’re all good fighters, and all of them train hard.
