The Sony a7R V often feels like a flagship camera and while it's no surprise that it excels at photography, it's absolutely no slouch for video as well. But how does it stack up against the Sony a1 and if you're looking to upgrade, which camera should you be looking at? Let's talk about it...

  • I just sold my A7Rv to replace with a second A1 body. For me as a wildlife photographer the A1 is better in every respect apart from the lack of flip/tilt screen. With the A7Rv too many of my photos of flying birds, or even small birds were out of focus. I think the new AI autofocus on the A7Rv is ‘work in progress’. For wildlife photographers the A1 is clearly a much better camera and worth its higher cost.

    • I was commenting on that issue on one of the Mark Galer's video. He has pointed out that the if you want to compare AF performance between A7R and A1 you need distinguish Focus Acquisition (here A7R could be better because of AI) and Focus Tracking (here A1 is a clear winner because of stacked sensor, to sensor blackouts and more af/lens actuations per sec.) My interpretation is that A7R could be better from A1 in terms of AF as long as you are not pressing the shutter button ;-)

  • Gareth nice review, I completely agree with your assessment of this. I've had both the A1 and all the A7R series. I've also had 2 GFX 100s. For me, the GFX is didn't give me enough advantage over my Sony, A7R4A which I recently part exchanged against the A7R5. The a 705 for me represents probably one of the best cameras I've ever used and abused a lot of cameras over the years. The AI. Auto focus is not really of any great concern to me because I spend a lot of my time mainly performing landscape shooting. For me, the articulated rear screen is a game changer. I wanted that for so long ability to vertically hold the camera close to the ground to be able to see what I'm shooting as well as the tethering which to the Sony app on my iPhone was excellent with the A1 but was downgraded somewhat on the other Sony models but with this new A7R5 It's on a par with the A1 performance giving me a lot of extra functionality including choosing the focus point which the old version wouldn't do so I'm very happy with mine and intend to keep it for sometime. Will find it difficult to find reasons to replace it. As a primarily landscape photographer, this camera represents me the most capable camera I've ever come across and they're still features. I haven't even started to explore for instance, focus stacking and the multishift pixel shift mode which I hope to do quite soon, but unfortunately the raw driver for Photoshop and Lightroom hasn't been released by Adobe yet, which I'm keenly waiting for. Stress, I am not a Sony fanboy, although it might come across that I am but I've had Olympus. I've had Fuji film. I've had Panasonic's all digital and I keep coming back to Sony which for me says everything.

  • Having watched Taylor Jackson and Manny Ortiz reviews on the A7R5, two features you've missed on the A7R5 is improved auto white balance and metering. They both said AWB was now really usable on the A7R5, where it hadn't been on previous cameras. I'd love to buy the A7R5 but I reckon I'd be shooting medium raw 90% of the time, using the 61mp to get some crop and extra reach from a lens only. Im just not sure if there is a disadvantage working that way, would I get more noise in crop mode, I just don't know, as no one has addressed this use case scenario.

  • It totally depends on what and how you shoot. I primarily shoot raptors in flight, and that being said - The A1 is the better camera for me. Even taking into consideration the additional resolution, and advanced autofocus the A7r5 does not have a stacked sensor which leads to considerable limitations for erratic fast moving subjects. I was quite surprised that the A7R5 does not have a blackout free EVF after hearing all the hype over the EVF upgrade over the A7R4. I own both units and will use both happily, but the A7R5 will have some limitations that will limit how often I grab it over my A1. If I was a Landscape or studio photographer then the A7R5 would get the nod.

But the best feature is The fact that you can shoot 60mp's shots and then go into APSC for 30mp's is just hands down the most valuable feature It makes my prime lenses become two folcal plain lenses in one, all while still having high res shots for croping Regards, Rick

  • I just took delivery of the A7RV yesterday. I'm a retired photography enthusiast. I bought it as a hybrid camera. No, not video and stills, but as FF and APS-C. I shoot birds, landscape travel and grandkids mostly. My current kit (until yesterday) included an A7IV and an A6600. I have a very nice collection of APS-C lenses, but I'm just done with the A6600 for so many reasons. I have no confidence that Sony will remedy that any time in the foreseeable future. The usability/ergonomics are so poor. Small low res EVF and LCD, tiny flat buttons, only one real control wheel, not to mention, the grip is so short, and I have large hands, that I have to have a SmallRig grip extension on it all the time. That. brings the weight up to within 150gm or so of the A7RV. Another option I considered was the Fuji X-H2 which turns out is only 60 gm lighter than the A7RV. The A7IV was great, but to use it as a crop camera, I was down to 14mp. So bottom line is I get a camera that is superior in every way, that I can use as a small kit without any compromise. Win win.

  • Good thoughts. I have the A1 and the A7R5 arrives today. Why the A7R5 if I already have the A1? Most importantly, here is how I use my cameras. 90% is landscape. 10% is people including youth field sports like soccer and football. (Sorry, I'm sure that sounded redundant to you!) I don't do video at all. The move to the A1 gave me one camera that can do it all. But.... I almost never use the monitor. The quality just isn't there. I do love the EVF on the A1 but the A7R5 will nearly match it. I have long wished for Focus Bracketing. Not a must-have but there are so many times when it would have been useful. What I am looking forward to with the A7R5 is the monitor (both the fact that I can deploy it in a lot of ways which is useful when shooting some landscape scenes and the fact that it is higher quality) and the Focus Bracketing. I am still undecided as to whether or not I prefer the controls on the right-hand top of the A1 vs having those functions in the Function Menu. To be honest, the most common think I forget while using the A1 is that I have forgotten to change the drive mode. What I don't really know because I haven't seen any comparisons is how the autofocus tracking for field sports is better on the the A1 or the A7R5. If the A7R5 can match the A1 and if I find that 10 frames per second is adequate then I will sell the A1. I only shoot sports for friends and for free so I am not a pro that must get the winning shot. I photographed soccer action for 10 years using the successive Canon 1D bodies and they worked well enough for my needs. The Canon 1D Mark 4 had up to 10 frames per second. So if the tracking works, 10 frames per second should be good enough for me. But I'll need to try them side by side. And maybe, while shooting sports, it will be nice to have 2 camera setups with different lenses. We'll see.

  • I had ordered my A7 IV 3 weeks ago and loved it. It was my first photography camera. I love photography so much that I bought a 70-200 gm2, + 2x teleconverter, 24-70 gm2, and the sony 90 macro. The other day I was like...I wanted even more out of photography so I ordered the a7R V for my 2nd camera. Sony said they would have it delivered by Jan 4th so I was bummed. Tonight when I checked my emails, they had shipped it and will arrive 12/22! So excited. The 1 thing I hope Sony would change is the CFexpress type A. Like we ALL hate it. It's slower and more expensive than type B. I really hope they change it for Cameras going forward.

  • I just sold my R IV to get the R V. It'll be here in the morning :) I already own the A1 so no decision to make. I loved my R4 for portraits but it felt so slow with the buffer filling up because of the large files and slow SD cards. I hated being locked out of the camera settings until the buffer cleared. I mapped APS-C mode to the joystick button so I could quickly zoom in with a prime lens. However if the buffer was writing I couldn't get in or out of APSC mode. The focus system was OK but not great. This R5 just blew my mind when I saw the specs. It ticks all the boxes for my photography needs. I won't be using it for video so I don't mind that it doesn't have better video specs. I have the A1 for that and Sony would hurt the A1 sales if it gave the R5 better video specs. 3 different lossy sizes ends the argument about workflow time and storage needs vs a smaller MP camera. I size fits all now.

  • I have heard many reviewers mention that due to A1 does not have a "dedicated AI processor" on the A7RV therefore many not be possible to have the same level of subject recognition capability upgraded. So I went through the teardown photos of both cameras and examined the motherboard layouts and found them to be mostly identical. Then I re-watched the product announcement video for Sony A1 and found in the section of Real-time Eye AF at 9:54 and 10:41 both mentioned how improved A.I. technology is been implemented into A1 for subject recognition to work with the system that tracks and focus at 120/s. I think the A1 does have A.I. chip in it with full capability to do so just depending on Sony's willingness to add them into the firmware.
