One of the most precious moments in my life is when my father dropped the facade of being a father and told me about all his failings. It made him more accessible to me. Literally crashed at friend's houses, "couch-surfing" we called it. Literally hung out at train stations to "make time pass quicker." May have done some of the questionable things too. Maybe. Thank goodness Nova and Tom found each other. They still had rough times, but by supporting each other they changed their lives for the better. See an early video of theirs when they used the band name "GFBF," the song is "I'm Not Well." In it they recognize how much trouble they are having, but see a hopeful future together.
