    • @@michaelarchangelthehammerI just assumed from the family’s demeanor that they had bear spray but were too far away in the video to use it. A pistol wouldn’t have stopped a bear. It might have irritated it or surprised it. Bear spray is specifically made to deter bears.

  • If you see a bear: Black bear: it probably won’t attack you (unless it has cubs) just keep making loud noises, walk fast, but don’t run, and keep an eye on it. Also if you have bear/pepper spray, take it out, just to be safe. Grizzly bear: don’t look away from it, and back up slowly. Take out your bear/pepper spray. If it starts chasing you, play dead, covering your neck with your hands. Cougar (cause why not): make your self look as big as possible to try and scare it away. Take out your bear/pepper spray. In any of these cases DO NOT RUN. These animals are much faster than the average human. Also, if your on a hike in bear/cougar country, make sure to make a lot of noise so that the animals know you’re there.

    • Griffin wants to lay down and wait for it to get close and sneak up behind it.. That's something I would totally do at his age. My mom was telling me there was this doctor who had a lion back in the 70's when I was a knee high and other people would never go near it.. Here I am of course in the cage with the thing trying to feed it she says her heart stopped until the big thing took the food and started licking me. She said it got out once, someone complained and the towns people all hunted it down and killed it even though it didn't hurt anyone.. It just got out. But as my mom says, this lion was huge.

    • @@evanlecours5612 Agreed, apparently there’s a tactic for each type of bear you encounter: play dead for a grizzly, and pray to God if it’s either a black bear or polar bear UPDATE: If it’s a black bear, realistically you can get away from it by asserting dominance (E.g., yelling at it, slowly backing away, throwing rocks at it) - it should leave you alone and flee. Just try not to be too aggressive or too quiet around it, otherwise it’s animals instincts are going to detect you as their next meal (especially if food has been scarce that time of the year).

    • If it’s brown lay down (except for grizzly), if it’s black fight back. I would suggest confirming by looking it up yourselves, but for brown bears you would play dead, and for black bears you make yourself loud and big to scare it away

For a black bear the best thing to do would be to get away but if that isn't possible it is better to try to scare it off/fight back. If it's a polar bear the best thing to do is probably just accepting death.

  • For the people saying guns, I say bear spray. A gun will not kill a big bear instantly, especially if you never fired it in your life, especially for self defense, under stress. Bear spray on the other hand has a big spread area, will surely "hit" something. On top of this, the bear will get the idea to stay away from people next time.
