Worlds Biggest Wild Cows - Dangerous Gaur of India

While traveling in South India in 2009 a farmer told us about a herd of Gaur that was casually chomping their way through a selection of farms and gardens. We watched them for over an hour as they munched and clambered through the vegetation. They were so preoccupied with feeding that they didn't seem to care who or what was nearby - and why should they. One female in particular seemed very relaxed in my presence so I was confident that I could get fairly close without alarming or spooking her. It was a real pleasure to feel the breath of this wondrous animal on my face before she finally sauntered off and disappeared into the forest.
Wild Gaur can be very dangerous animals and I wouldn't usually get this close - especially if they are with a calf or if it's breeding season, and I certainly would never attempt to get this close to one of those powerful males. By all accounts they can be quite moody!
The Gaur is a large, dark-coated forest animal of South Asia and Southeast Asia. It's the largest species of wild cattle in the world, bigger than the African buffalo, the extinct aurochs, wild water buffalo or bison. Only Rhinos, Hippos and Elephants grown larger than these incredible animals. The males can weigh as much as 1.5 tonnes.

Having reduced muscle mass increased their survival against the predators and staying alive in general as muscles require a significant amount of energy to maintain.

One male Subu (named in our tribe) of ours had a horn span of about 5.5ft, but died a year back in territorial fight during mating season (the same fate he gave to a few), and now it's skulled head is at my grandfather's place as is our custom to keep and display our Subu adin (Mithun Head).

He replied that the cows , somewhat unbelievably, had been driven all the way overland from Bharat (India) ! I expressed incredulity. He remained absolutely calm but engaged me in discussion. Few Americans will ever understand Asia , I barely do after decades of excruciating, mind-blowing effort. I now suppose such an effort to deliver the cows was motivated by religion. But the same decades of academic reading ... never cited nor revealed such "unofficial" , independent, humble but successful endeavors. They looked like happy cows. I remember.

But you guys always looks everything from angle of religion that's your problem is. I haven't commented anything thats based on religion or based on my belief also just think you are sitting and eating and someone comes and start poking you and says you're dangerous that's why I said hypocrite and we are dangerous to them and by them I dont mean cow only I mean to say every animal that is present on earth. Read carefully before abusing someone or questioning there belief. Also at last Yes cows does hurt humans and someone killed but when provoked unnecessaryaily.

  • I would love to photograph Gaur like that, a collection (zoo) near where I live have a herd of them in their Asia section (along with Indian Rhino, Yak, Visayan Warty Pig, Sloth Bear, Camels, Blackbuck, Indian Elephant and Przewalski's Horse), they are the only ones housed in the UK as well, they do well as they have calves every year, however I seem to go at the wrong time of the year as I can never get a good photo of them due to them being kept on the hard standing because of their hooves in the winter, I hope to see them again this summer though when they are out in their paddock, I would love to go to India and see them in the wild as well. UPDATE: I visited my local zoo that house them last May and November and got some great photos of the Gaur- I took around 280 photos, during my visits, the zoo had 4 Individuals but sadly the last male passed away before the start for this year. Due to them (3 Individuals- all females) being the only ones in the UK I doubt they will bring in another male to replace the one that died so this could mean the start of the end of Indian Gaur in UK zoos, which is a real shame as I love the species, I hope to visit either Berlin Zoo or Jardin de plantes in Paris as they both have Indian Gaur and other animals that are not common in UK collections

Gaurs are actually the largest natural cattle in the world. Sometimes a fully grown male Gaur can weigh more than two tonnes and a cow can weigh one thousand five hundred to One thousand eight hundred kilos. They are huge and only muscle.
