NYPD arrests dozens of Columbia University protesters after clearing occupied building

Hundreds of New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers have entered the campus of Columbia University, taking multiple protesters into custody, in the latest escalation in the Gaza protests that have swept college campuses, mostly in the United States.
NYPD officers used flash-bang grenades to breach Columbia's Hamilton Hall, which protesters had barricaded themselves inside Tuesday.
Live television images showed officers entering the university in upper Manhattan, which has been the focal point of student protests against Israel’s war in Gaza, in which more than 34,535 Palestinians have been killed.
Al Jazeera’s Teresa Bo and Kristen Saloomey join us live outside Columbia University in New York to discuss the latest updates.

    • They have accomplished bringing the spotlight to a horrific and unjust genocide of innocents by a fascist military acting against established rules of war and humanitarian decency. They are actively demonstrating that the Palestinians are being treated as subhuman, and it needs to stop. Like someone should have stopped Hitler. They are acting on the right side of history. They bravely step up and shout FIRE while others stand by and do nothing but watch the fire. Thank God for these young persons with pure hearts and motives❤

  • Endowments, tuition fees, research grants, alumni donations and other revenue streams contribute towards financial stability and support their educational aims. As of the 2021/22 academic year, Ivy League institutions generated $40.61 billion in total revenue. The federal government provides enormous subsidies to the wealthiest universities by paying “overhead” on research grants. Ivy League universities received $1.8 billion for government-funded research grants despite having $192 billion in endowment funds. - something for those naysays to consider. With the MONEY the universities make why is any student in America paying tuition? These universities make enough money a year to pay for your education, your kids education, and your grandchildren’s education. However, they instead give it to countries like Israel who turn around and give it to the U.S. government to buy weapons.

    @DeannThomas-le2ut@DeannThomas-le2ut21 күн бұрын
    • Its like that in all countries , what is your alternative , its been like that for 800 years ? A lot of the money goes to grants , if your in sports or you've got high grades you can get grants or free education in some cases so its not that bad but I suppose there could be improvements , I agree . As technology improves , the institutions will be forced to reform , you'll see . Anyways ivy league schools are still the best in the world , and its not cheap

YOU PREFER that instead of putting the money back into the U.S. economy, we GIVE IT AWAY TO ANOTHER Country? What countries? Because in Israel they have a cap on college tuitions. 3-5k A YEAR for a BA, this includes EVERYTHING. While American students tuition goes up every year.

On May 2nd and May 3rd, I was attacked with laser or microwave weapons. One attack rendered me unconscious for a couple hours, and the other left me with swelling and pain on the right side of my head. I do not believe that this was caused by a natural illness, because of the timing of it and because I got a warning of severe danger just before I was attacked yesterday. Today I am still struggling with the residual effects or possibly continued microwaving. I pray for my safety too.

  • I believe it's crucial to consider amending laws in the US to prevent protesters from covering their faces, making it a felony due to potential security risks. This practice, often associated with extremists and those hiding behind pro-Hamas terrorist sentiments while posing as pro-Palestinian protesters, poses a threat, especially in educational institutions. We need transparency, especially for future government employees, to prevent potential infiltration by extremist elements. Additionally, there's a glaring hypocrisy in claiming freedom of speech while hiding identities, undermining the sincerity of their cause. It's essential for both the government and investigative journalists to trace the money trail, identifying foreign influences fueling chaos. Those arrested, particularly students, should be documented to prevent future workplace sabotage. Insurance companies should not cover damages that could have been avoided by expelling these individuals before they illegally broke into buildings. Furthermore, universities should ensure equal treatment, refraining from merely giving a slap on the wrist to these pro-Hamas thugs.
