  • The bear literally has the toddler mindset of "if I don't look at them, I'm invisible". Jeez. That's scary.

  • You were lucky he was a young bear. We have a 10 year old bear (Bart) who makes sure the young bachelor bears keep moving along. About 5 years ago, Bart was at our downstairs sliding glass door. He’s around 500+lbs. We were out all day in the early spring. We stop feeding the birds in the feeders in front when the bears come out of hibernation. Bart wreaked so many that we bring them all inside. One day our closest neighbor called and said to look outside our downstairs sliding glass door. I looked and Bart was looking in the door. We live in an area with tons of wildlife. I breed chickens and have horses so we have cameras up everywhere to keep track of predators. I believe in working with wildlife rather than killing them. In 33 years I’ve never had a bear bother my chickens. Foxes are another issue. We have a huge run for the chickens (32’ x 25’). If no one is going to be home , the chickens are locked in the run. We use non lethal methods to keep our animals safe. One item we keep by any door of the house, in the hay shed and barn is an air horn. So I grabbed the air horn and squeezed the trigger. Bart took off running. We didn’t mind him snoozing on a big rock outcrop in the front of the house. At the time we had two small dogs and a huge 100+lb pit bull cross. I always checked the camera feeds to make sure it was safe. The horses were actually good about chasing a fox out of the property where they free ranged. Plus, when we were home, the dogs were outside. The little dogs thought they giants. I would be outside working with the animals, cleaning or working with the horses most of the day. I keep feeders and a suet holder off the deck which is ~15’ from the ground. Bart is way too big to fit up the stairway. This a young bear showed up in the spring, however, he’s stayed around. He actually climbed up the stairs onto the deck and was able to empty one seed feeder. The rest got knocked down. He went back down, sat on his butt and had a great time emptying all the seed into hid mouth. What he missed, he patiently pick up in his paws and ate until he was satisfied. I’m getting ready to participate in the fall Cornell Ornithology Lab bird count. It’s so much fun, but I don’t want to bear to interfere so now we bring in all of our feeders at night. I’m the fall everyone is eating like crazy to put on pounds for migration or for hibernation. If you like watching birds rather than bears, check out the Cornell website and join the fun. People from all over the United States participate. We counted 2,500 different birds. If you’re nervous about bears, carry an air horn with you. It’s worked great for us

  • Can you legally shoot them with pellet guns? These bears are way to comfortable when they encounter humans. The don't see a us as a threat.
