  • Poor Roger. Balls that spinny are so hard to slice, and this is just the begining of that trend. Players after this all learned to play with more 'closing' grips, such as Rafa's semi-western, or Djocokic's extreme-western, so they can be more spinny themselves, and also more resistent to rivals' spinness. Today's tennis is all about running and hammering, almost like boxing.

  • Federer was so damn good on clay from 2004-2011 or so. His footwork was so clean and pace was so huge that the slowness of the court doesn't matter so much... except for that guy standing across from him, who handles him with ease during the peak of his athleticism. Federer probably wins 3 or 4 more RG titles if Nadal doesn't exist, and probably also wins Wimbledon 2008 if it's Schuttler instead of Nadal -- Fed was 3-1 against Rainer, five years younger, and hadn't even faced him since 2002, when Fed wasn't quite Roger Federer yet. Without Nadal in the mix, Fed adds another 10+ Masters titles, 4-6 more Slams, and is the unanimous GOAT. But Nadal existed, so we get a lifetime of incessant argument about who was the very best in the game.
