  • Such a great video. I’m using a Sony A7R2 (just missed all those firmware updates) and have been using lock on AF for focus/recompose. I’m thinking of A7IV as next body (love to do A9II but out of my budget as amateur) - love to see the amount of great functionality on the lower end cameras. The wide focus w/face priority and eye AF will be an absolute game changer for me.

  • Great tutorial! I ended up buying an a7c as a 2nd camera to my a7r4 for events, per your advice & am even more pleased than expected. It’s so nimble! I am concerned about your recommendation to use wide cont AF, because I shoot running races, and there are usually non-runners in my field of vision (race officials, etc) that would get caught by eye-AF. I’ll need lots of practice (coming from canon) using zone AF. Thanks for these highly useful videos!

    • If you watch my Back Button AF video tutorial (the 2nd of two I have created) you will see that I do not try to preach for Sony users to use one or the other. There are a couple of features, however, that are difficult or not possible to access on the latest Sony cameras when using BBF - such as the 'touch tracking override' when using the Finder by moving your thumb across the monitor (switching a Wide AF area into a spot tracking AF area).

  • Hi Mark this is an great video, I have a specific job to do that entails shooting synchro diving at an inside venue. What would be the best settings to try and get both divers at different distances from the camera sharp? I'm shooting with a Sony A1 and an f2.8 lense. I've found I have to shoot at between 1600 to 2000 shutter to get a clean shot at 5000-8000 iso

    @sundancewfs@sundancewfs2 жыл бұрын
    • You are unlikely to get two divers sharp when they are at different distances when using a telephoto lens. This would be achievable if you were using a wide-angle or standard focal length lens with the aperture stopped down. use a depth of field calculator to determine what aperture and focal length you would need.

    @bryanstephens6007@bryanstephens60073 жыл бұрын
    • I haven't used the Sigma 100-400. Look for reviews where the photographer has captured speeding action coming towards the camera to see if its AF speed is good. Many reviewers forget to test this.

    • LOVE my Sigma 100-400 on my A7iii. Such a versatile lens. Easily does both landscapes and BIF/wildlife. Keep it and don't bother worrying about the Sony 1-4. If you have an A9 or A7R series body, you likely have the $$ for Sony glass as well. I recently picked up the 200-600 for my A7iii to replace the 100-400 because I wanted more reach for smaller BIF shots...at the cost of portability. I also like how the 2-6 has internal zooming (no air pump).

  • My God I can’t believe I have lived so long without finding your videos!!!! This has been so helpful! Only one question… I have the A7R4, and I only shoot dogs, particularly dogs on agility competitions. Today I tried several things, and I don’t understand which AF settings to use since there are obstacles that get in the way of their eye or face, and since this camera doesn’t support eye AF tracking on animals, I missed a lot of pictures mainly because it wasn’t focusing when I thought it was… My question is, when you have dogs running through obstacles that get in the way, what should my trigger finger do if I had it on focus but lost it due to an obstacle? I’ve been trying to half press it every time the dog moves like 3 meters, or when he is about to move towards me, but if i don’t manage to lock on, what should I do? I know that with only a9ii you can focus track on wide, but I have no idea about what to do… please help?

  • Thank you Mark, great update on the focusing tutorial you made a while back. Mark one question though, when you achieve eye focus, and get the green square around the eye, do you hold the shutter or any button half way to keep it in focus between bursts (I use an a9)? Meaning when you have two moments you wish to capture high speed, how do you hold the focus between them as the subject moves? On the lenses, you mentioned the Sony 85mm 1.8 prime is fast, and then you move on to the Sony and Batis 135s. Is the Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8 slow? I have it for portraits; should I also get the cheaper Sony 85/1.8 for when I'm shooting action sports? I use the 200-600 frequently on my A9. I'm thinking of getting an A7rIV for my second camera. Why don't you like the 200-600 on the A7RIV? How does it compare to when it's mounted on the A9? Thanks again, great video as always.

  • Hello Mark, thank you for sharing your knowledge. You have helped me improve my photography skills. I have a question about ND filters. After watching your video about Freewell magnetic filters, I have decided to invest in their products. My question is, I have a budget to purchase two filters, would you recommend a polarizer and an ND, or two NDs? Also, what #NDs do you recommend for starting? Best, John

    @johnoliver3106@johnoliver31063 жыл бұрын
    • I use an ND8 (3stops) and an ND64 (6 Stops). Use a step-up ring to use your larger filters on a smaller diameter lens. If you shoot video some prefer to use a variable ND filter but quality is not quite as good as a fixed ND value. On most lenses except ultra wide angle you can stack the two ND filters and obtain an ND 512 (9 Stops). You only need a polarising filter to remove surface reflections from water or glass)

  • Do you shoot auto racing with aperture priority?

    @user-ev4qn8wu8d@user-ev4qn8wu8d10 ай бұрын
    • Yes - Aperture Priority with ISO Auto Min.SS. Shutter Priority runs the risk of overexposure when shooting slow shutter speed pans in full sun. ISO Auto Minimum Shutter speed selects the slowest shutter speed that does not lead to overexposure. It’s advantage is it is a variable rather than fixed setting. You must also prevent the camera from selecting an aperture using Shutter Priority that disables Phase Detect AF. Shutter Priority does not ensure this.

      @AlphaCreativeSkills@AlphaCreativeSkills10 ай бұрын
  • Hi Mark! At 1h:01m:51s, you suggest when dropping down from Zone to spot on the dog running at you, that you should have Eye-AF override so that the eyes remain in focus and not the nose (because that's what the spot is grabbing?) Won't Eye-AF kick in automatically on shutter half-press even with Spot, or only zone? (Using an A1 here!) Thanks so much in advance!

    @fbottone@fbottone Жыл бұрын
    • Animal Eye AF and AF Tracking can be used at the same time when using an A1 but this is not the case with all Alpha models. Sometimes a photographer needs to disable Face Eye priority when shooting when the eye is not the priority when focusing, e.g. photographing someone wearing a helmet or mask and having the camera picking up someone in the crowd behind them) - if this has been done the photographer will need to remember to re-enable Face Eye priority in AF.

  • Just set up my A6400 putting your recommended settings for action shots into the memory. I have discovered that if the camera mode dial is set to MR when turned on, the camera does not display the Memory recall settings screen to allow selection of which memory mode is desired. If the camera is turn on in any other mode then switched to MR mode then the memory recall selection screen is displayed and I can choose memory recall 1, 2 or 3. Is this a Sony glitch or my camera glitch?? Great vid regardless

    @stevejones5391@stevejones53913 ай бұрын
    • This is standard behaviour. The latest Alpha cameras do not display the memory Recall Settings, even when you turn the dial to 1, 2 or 3. You can, however, see this screen by going to the memory recall menu. For a greater understanding of your camera go to Patreon.com/markgaler where you can download an eBook for your camera and get personal support.

  • I just picked up 100-400mm GM lens and i have question. in 2023 for a7c do you still prefer those settings for dog photography? focus area (wide tracking) and iso auto min ss 2000? max aperture f11. continuous hi? I ask this because there has been some firmware updates and if you know did they change something that might work better? Also i want ask you a7c vs a9 mark 1 autofocus performance in 2023. would it be up or down grade at this point, price range is kind of same in both bodys nowadays. And im asking for dog photography perspective + video work. Thank you! :)

    • The A7C is a camera that was released during 2021 so this video covers this camera. Recent Firmware updates have not changed the AF workflow for shooting sports/action. All cameras that follow the A7C use the new menus so I have a different video for action/sports settings for these cameras. An A9 uses a 'stacked' sensor (same as the A9II, A1 and Nikon Z9) which inherently makes these cameras better for shooting rapidly moving targets. These cameras are designed to be sports cameras so will outperform the A7C so long as the A9 had the 2019 firmware upgrade so that it shares the modern (post 2019) tracking algorithms. I provide detailed guidance and support on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel + the option to download a 500 or 600-page eBook for your camera + over 25 hours of video seminars.

I only really ramped up my support for Sony Alpha cameras when I left the University where I was a lecturer in photography. If you were to upgrade to an A7III (a four year old camera) your Phase detect AF would be a thousand times faster (slight exaggeration but the camera could then be used to shoot sport) and most of the information would then be relevant to your camera.

  • Can I assume you're talking about shooting outdoors in natural light? I shoot sports indoor/outdoor. I've never tried shooting in A inside a gym. Is this something you would do? I do have a question and I don't how to fix it. I shoot manual indoors. No matter how hard I try to get my white balance correct, the pics come out too yellow. This is with a sony A9. If I change to A mode, the screen turns a bright white. I have to assume this because auto ISO?

    @jerrycurl502@jerrycurl5022 жыл бұрын
    • The fact that your screen turned white because you turned to A is linked to other settings which leads to overexposure. A is just another Auto Exposure mode which will try to balance the exposure so long as the parameters it can shift (ISO and Shutter speed) allow it to create an appropriate exposure.

  • Hi Mark, I looked this great tuto for the second time and understood now at 59:40 what you meant. On a74, joystick set to "focus standard", when i am in wide with face+eye detetcion (I rely on artificial inteligence to focus 99% of cases on a face in that mode), we need to KEEP PRESSED joystick and we hear a BEEP. A74 in fact switches from AF-C wide with eye+face detection to AF-S but at same time makes the focus at center, meaning you cannot point another location. This is not very useful !!! because you need to anticipate what you are going to focus at center (keep rule of third grid to help) before pressing that button. You cannot change focus location. This is not what we expect ! we expect a focal point at center we can put on subject and start tracking. I tried your other method setting AFON on tracking +AF. Again, not very useful in wide mode with face+eye detection because there is no focus point (spot...) when you come from wide mode for starting to track something. when you press afon it is still in wide mode so tracks anything closest from camera. Definitely there is a problem in the way Sony makes tracking in EVF mode, the way i prefer to be stable while i shoot instead of holding camera with one hand and pressing AFon on LCD tactile shaking camera. Z6ii is so nice : you just press FN2 front button and have a focus point at middle, you point the camera and start tracking.

    @marclabro@marclabro Жыл бұрын
    • There are options you can use to initiate tracking such as using the Monitor as a touch pad so that when you touch the pad you get a cross-hair you can drop on any subject in the finder to initiate tracking (see my monitor and Finder video tutorial). Another option is to set up a Recall Custom Hold with a spot AF tracking area. The options you are referring to is to allow users to come out of AF-C and into AF-S ...so not designed to do what you want to achieve. The camera, however, is more than capable of doing what you need it to do and can do what you see with the Z6ii. I can offer more assistance on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel.

      @AlphaCreativeSkills@AlphaCreativeSkills Жыл бұрын
    • Thank you Mark, I am going to investigate that recall custom hold option. I tried your "orange cross" method, very interesting, but really too sensitive and difficult to locate the cross with finger while being in EVF I prefer to LCD.
