I did the whole depart from a layover going to Canada. I had to go to Calgary which was ridiculously expensive but found a cheap flight to Edmonton with a layover in Calgary. Downside was any checked bags would go to Edmonton so I had to rely on my carry-on suitcases. But the flight was $800 cheaper so I did some shopping therapy.

If you're talking about a multi-city flight, then it might have to be done directly with the airline themselves and not through a fare comparison website
