The change to the one helmet rule to bring back goated throw back unis has significantly improved uniforms
it's a good start, but I wish the rule wasn't relegated to a few games, and to only alternates
I grew up a cowboys fan expecting the white helmet on thanksgiving Thursday. It was so wild how the same year that single helmet rule went in to effect, color rush became a thing. Waiting for the whiteout cowboys with silver helmets was hilarious knowing they had the old white helmet that would have gone so good
But it also brought pointless and horrible Black helmets such as the Saints, Commanders, and Colts.

Not only are the throwbacks great, but alternative helmet schemes, like the houston metalic red. I hope the rams bring back the white horn design from a few years ago
Those Tampa Bay Creamsicle jerseys & Errol Flynn logo are still my favorite unis of all time. When they wore them again this season, I found myself rooting for em again, just like I did as a 10 year old kid in 1977.

O I was 9 years old back in '76 when the Seahawks and Buccaneers were NEW NOO GNU KNEW NU!!!!! Those creamsicle uniforms were amazing!
It was actually voted the ugliest uniform back then. Probably the reason they changed to red.
I truly enjoy the modern trend of this era: Take the old simplicity and add your team's unique twist. Seeing the Jags go form "bright but a bit cluttered" to "it's 90% black now" to "ok fine we're in Florida we'll keep it light" has been great but they're 1 unique sellling point from turning that into a top tier look
Adding numbers and a jaguar to the sleeve looked so good in that example at 10:41
The Jags current uniform is a great base, but adding gold accents and some stripes would be S tier
I have 0 problem with any modern uniforms. People have different tastes. I don't think the commanders new uniform is awful at all. Looks pretty cool to me. Infact the modern tighter fit I think is way superior to the big bulky pads of the past. An athlete looks more like an athlete in tighter uniforms. The old uniforms look like they are wizards wearing baggy robes to me.
I disagree with the jags and cardinals current unis, they’re missing a small detail like a gold lining around the numbers or the arizona state flag incorporated into the designs
The Jags black and white set kills their greatest asset: their teal blue. You want to go basic? Keep it almost all b/w and make the numbers teal blue. Same idea with that Jags flavor

Chargers baby blues are the best. They should have never done the dark blue. Also I’m a Vikings fan the purple is iconic and will never change. Also in my opinion our logo is the best in the NFL.

What is the greatest NFL uniform of all time and why is it the Houston Oilers?
I was watching the Cowboys game and I was just mesmerised by the seahawks uniforms. The blue was so crisp and the way the green merges as a logo and pinstripes on the shoulders made me want to cry. I think simplicity is the way NFL uniforms should be.
These are the kind of uniforms that connect the present to the past. You can watch footage from the 60's, 80's, 2000's, and today and instantly recognize who is what. Likewise, if someone from the 1960's time traveled to today, they would STILL easily recognize their favorite teams (as well as spot the new teams) and that's what's wonderful about the designs.
The color rush era was unironically one of my favorite eras. Not all of them were great, but a lot were so clean.
I enjoyed them too, but they're the kind of uniform that's best in moderation. Just once or twice a season, not every week.

As a Chiefs fan, I've always found it to be kind of neat that you can go back and watch footage from Super Bowls 1 and 4 and that the Chiefs, Packers, and Vikings basically look the same now as they did then. Don't fix what isn't broken.

The Vikings are different now with a softer purple and odd-shaped numbers. Their old school look is much better than today's.
The NHL is known for that too. All of the original 6 teams look basically just like they did when they started, minus a couple modern tweaks obviously.
My Vikings have gone through some dark eras. The 2006-2012 era for us was awful, and while our 2013-present uniforms are improvement, nothing beats 1961-2005.
The vast majority of nfl teams’ old uniforms from the 80s/90’s are their best and it’s not even close. Buffalo, Tampa bay, Seattle, Philly, Atlanta, etc, old uniforms are way better than anything they’ve had since they changed from those ones decades ago. Have those teams use those uniforms as their standard every week jersey and use new alternates that are actually good looking like the bengals did with their all whites (which fans of the nfl had been begging the bengals to adopt for years. Seriously, there are dozens of good looking alternates teams should use which fans have designed just like the bengals did with the all whites). It’s that simple.

Philly Kelly green are beautiful. But there modern, and more specifically the black jerseys, are also very clean. They should keep doing what there doing, the throwback uni is a treat now and then.
Atlanta and Buffalo? Yeah. Seattle, Tampa, Philly? Hell nah. The newer designs absolutely slap.
I agree with you, kinda. I watched the Bills-Eagles game on TV this past Sunday and I honestly don't like the kelly greens all that much. I think the color just doesn't look great on modern TVs and sleek uniforms. Seattle actually looks great in their 80s unis and they should wear those more. Two teams that I think should permanently change back to their 80s looks are the Giants and Rams. They look a lot cleaner in those jerseys. Atlanta and Buffalo look better with red helmets.

as someone who followed football his entire life, i think this is the first time ive seen a deep dive on the actual history of the uniforms in general. Normally whenever the NFL uniform is discussed it's usually about the pads or helmet or perhaps whats the latest design is today for merchandising but never a deep dive like this. Well done.

The Rams are a futuristic team, I don't see them switching to a retro style jersey soon.
The throwback revolution I think started in 2019 with the 49ers and their color rush whites which were a flip on their mid-late 90s dropshadow look

That’s how I feel about the Seahawks throwback that they brought back this year. I think it’s probably my favorite football uniform of all time now, seeing it in modern form. I always watched those old NFL Films Presents clips of them wearing them back in the day and wished they would bring them back, and they finally did!

Color Rush was a *frustrating* era more than anything. So many teams had wasted designs (Packers, Ravens, Colts) that weren't different enough to justify their existence, but then you get the Seahawks in blinding neon green (which was PERFECT for the Seattle fan base and you can't convince me otherwise). What Nike are doing now is what they should have done from the start (different strategies for different teams). Throwbacks are perfect for teams like Seattle and Philly with throwback colors, but Indy's base design is so simple and classic that you need to try something else (the black helmets were a start, but they should try a mostly black design). Heck, now Color Rush can come back as new jersey color options that didn't exist before. Would the Packers look *good* in yellow jerseys? Probably not, but you know they'd sell in Green Bay. The Saints and 49ers feature a lot of gold, so why don't they try gold jersey options? Let teams control up to 3 primary pants and jerseys (home/away/alt). This covers the teams that have black and gray alternates and provides several mix-and-match combos. Then, you let Nike do ONE experimental uniform design just to try something new and see what it looks like. The only real design note would be: make something that does NOT exist in the team's primary options. Nike don't have to hit on all of these experiments. They just need to hit on a few options that reach "this should be a standard jersey" status to keep uniform designs fresh.

As I uniform historian, Sandknit now Rippon who still make uniforms today in their Berlin, Wisconsin factory used to make the uniforms for many teams. During the 90s when manufacturers logos started to pop up like Adidas and Nike, they were made side by side in the same factory in Berlin, WI. Good ole advertising
For years I've wanted the cardinals to do throwbacks uniforms. White jerseys with the state flag on the sleeve and red pants like they had in the 90s. Hopefully with the recent resurgence for nostalgic looks they will finally do it sometime soon.

An NFL Fan since 1989. I'm a New York Giants Fan. The Uniforms over time have changed so dramatically. The Wild West of The NFL in the Late 80s, Early Mid to Late 90s. Reebok 2001 - 2011 were great as well. Nike 2012 - Current, Credible Jersey Quality. G III and Mitchell & Ness are Honorable Mentions.

Here's my uniform take: A gradient colour design on the jersey is fine, just as long as the numbers are one solid colour. Jersey numbers with gradient colours are unnecessarily difficult to read on TV.

As a Seahawks fan, I know all of us want to go back to our throwback colors. The Navy/Neon worked well for it's time, and I still like them but neon is outdated and the modern-classic is in. I don't necessarily want the exact throwback design but at least the colors. For the last 2 years or so, I've only bought throwback merch of theirs because it just looks so much better to wear in today's fashion.
90's Seahawk uniforms are cool. I also like the design from around our first Super Bowl.

I only ask for three things in regards to uniforms: 1) Chargers go back to dark blue as their primary, especially the helmets. In a similar vein, Bills should wear red helmets again. 2) Rams and Giants go back to 80s throwbacks. They just feel right. 3) Jaguars get back their 2000s number font, cuz them with blocky numbers ain't it.

The Seahawks throwbacks you had on your initial video with DK Metcalf I have to admit are pretty fire. I don't think the original ones look nearly as good as the throwbacks today because these are properly using the vibrant color scheme NFL teams seem to enjoy nowadays. I would easily take them over the full green units they use every year it seems?

I know nostalgia isn't motivating my love for the older uniforms because I'm only 21 and never saw these teams play in their classic uniforms. Just about every single team has a throwback uniform that's better than the ones they wear now. I only make exception for Tampa because as nice as the creamsicles are, I just like the red and pewter better. The alarm clock uniforms deserve to be burned, though. Also need to take this moment to say I hate the failed abortion that is the Rams' "classic tribute" uniform. The original yellow and blue was simply beautiful and I loved seeing them wearing it as their home uniform in 2018. They somehow managed to make it butt ugly with the redesign.
I like the new Cardinals all white uniforms. It reminds me of my early days as a fan during the mid 70's and the Cardiac Cards. The all white unis of the time were fresh and these harken back to that. The all red, not so much. And don't get me started on the all black uniforms.

Look at the Chiefs, Raiders, Steelers, Packers, Vikings, 49ers (not the black), Bears (not orange, it belongs to Tampa & Denver) but you get my drift. Bringing in the second shell and not being lazy was a smart move for the league. Eagles, Buccaneers, Falcons, & Texans we're looking at you. Colts & Cardinals not so much.

Been saying it for awhile, but the Niners current throwbacks should be their permanent look. I'm okay with the white pants because the Red/White/Black combo looks so damn clean. Add the gold helmet for that pop of color and that's a wrap. Just look at the Thanksgiving Day game against the Seahawks. It wasn't even close who looked better on the field.

7:21 Funny story about those socks-those were intended for basketball. Football had their own design in the form of a V shaped pattern on the back, which I always loved (and still have!). That said, both designs are iconic to the era.
