📼Video Summary:
The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island in New York City. It was a gift from the people of France in the year 1886. The tablet in her right hand is the declaration of independence. The statue was designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi using a method called Repoussé. This involved making a life size plaster model first and then hammer copper sheets around it. The support structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel - the same person that helped build the Eiffel tower in Paris, France. The statue was built in Paris, France and then shipped across the ocean in 350 pieces. You can go inside the pedestal and climb the stairs, then if you have a ticket, you can climb the spiral staircase to get to the very top - The Crown. There's an emergency elevator inside just incase anything goes wrong. At one point they did allow the public into the torch but this stopped in the year 1916.

  • I recently read the excellent book, "Paris" by Edward Rutherford in which one major character is an iron worker who happens to work on both the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. It was fascinating as he also detailed the construction of each of these monuments, as well as the politics involved. Yes, just as you say and according to Rutherford, the entire statue was built in France, then dismantled and shipped to America. They also displayed it in Paris for a few months after it was built and before it was shipped over. It was up to the Americans to build the pedestal on which it sits. He also said that the cost of the pedestal was paid for by donations. I recommend reading this very interesting novel. I visited the Statue of Liberty many years ago, in 1978, I believe. At that time there was only one price and everyone climbed to the top. But... that meant the climb was very slow because each person stopped at the crown to look out for a while. It wasn't too hard to climb but I was young then. LOL!

  • I went to the crown as a kid - I vividly remember that never-ending spiral staircase, the inner straps, and being terrified how far the head was swaying in the wind. It felt like it was moving 6’ back and forth every second or two. Probably more like a few inches in reality and every large structure does it but it was REALLY tangible at the top of the statue and really unsettling if you’re not prepared for it.

  • I'm an airline pilot. I fly into KLGA about once per week. Often, we get a fantastic view of the Statue of Liberty. As much as I may be flying a plane at that point, I always think about my grandparents coming through Ellis Island as immigrants from Italy. My grandmother was a seamstress and my grandfather became a longshoreman on the Erie Canal. My grandfather wasn't very sentimental, but my grandmother always told the story of the first time she saw Lady Liberty, and the relief she felt that the troubles of Europe were over, and that there were endless possibilities in America. Still brings a tear to my eye. My grandfather served in the Navy in WWII and was the first certified paramedic in my state. My grandmother went on to build airplanes near my hometown. After the war, my grandfather founded a construction company that is still in business. RIP to them, and I thank them for instilling the idea that *anything* is possible.

    • So was I. Back in 2000, I was in Manhattan, decided one morning to visit the Statue of Liberty (sometime in October I think) and went to the island. It was so crowded at 12.00 I decided to have lunch first at one of the fastfoodjoints (and I don't like fastfood). Went up around 13.00, and after reaching the high of the pedestal, I was the lucky last one of that day to be allowed higher. So we climbed up with the spiral staircase, I took some photos with a onetime use camera (flash was so bad just one picture worked). Went up to the crown. After 9/11 I heard the statue became off limits, only the pedestal was still accessible. So this video surprises me that the statue has been made accessible again. But in my days, after the crown there was no option to climb into the torch. And there was no emergency elevator next to the staircase. Big surprise.

  • When I was a kid, my uncle took us to visit the statue. Even though I have lived in NYC all my life, I rarely go to visit any tourist attractions (figure there's no rush because I can do it eventually). But I remember how excited I was to actually walk the many stairs to get to the crown. This was in the 1970's and I don't recall having to reserve tickets (I just assumed my Uncle bought the tickets the day of). But I guess after 9/11 it's changed a great deal. I remember the stairs going up and down very well. As a kid it was a fun adventure but now at my age, you couldn't pay me enough to walk those stairs! The only thing that topped that experience was in 2000, I attended the wedding of a friend and the reception was at Windows of the World in one of the top floors of one of the towers of the World Trade Center. Now THAT was an amazing view! Even at that height, the Statue of Library looked small. I haven't visited the observation deck of the Freedom tower yet, but since the only way to reach it is by elevators, it's on my "bucket list" for now.

But the French also eat a lot of it. So once and for all, who invented French fries? Food historian Pierre Leclerc, a Belgian, gives the origin of French fries. "It is clear that the fries was invented at the beginning of the 19th century in Paris", he explains to the media Brut. "It was born in the Parisian street, it was born in the hands of the Parisian street fry vendors. And it was they who made the fried potato the popular emblematic Parisian dish of the 19th century before this fries be exported to Belgium. So it is clear that the fries are of French origin". A Belgian says it: fries are French. But then why do we believe that they come from Belgium? Pierre Leclerc continues: "During the 20th century, the fried potato deserted the streets of Paris at the same time as it reached Belgium. And imposed itself in Belgium as the national dish. The Belgians therefore naturally believed that the fried potato was of Belgian origin"." Even the university of Liege (Belgian city) say they are French

  • As always, you do an amazing job with your animation and overall production. I have the honor/privilege of working for the official photographer of the restoration of the SOL-back in the 80's. Peter B. Kaplan was a famous photographer who shot in the tallest structures in NYC-including the bridges, Chrysler Building, SOL and many others. I was with Peter in the mid 90's for a shoot in the Statue to record images of the new lighting system. After getting permits from the Government the four of us had the SOL all to ourselves. We shot before and after the tourist were allowed in. Here's a non-known secret: At one point peter told me to climb out on one of the support beams-which protruded out to Her face. As per his instructions, I sat with my back to Her eyes so I could look up at the support beam above my head. Welded onto it was, "Peter & Sharron" (his wife's name. During the many many months of work Peter had become a "buddy" to many of the workers and one agreed to "add peter's name to the SOL." Eventually after the official work was finished I wound up shooting some very col images on my own. We were supposed to go into the Torch but there was an issue and it didn't happen. But was still one o f my greatest adventures.

There was a lady with a big butt right in front of me (I was a kid, so I guess I remembered what was at eye level!). • I've been here once, tried to get crown tickets but they were sold out for the time I was meant to be in NYC so I only got base tickets for me and my family. Still an excellent experience! They still let me take a peek up the stairwell to the crown for the hell of it, cool to see in this video how the top of it looks. My mother is claustrophobic and has an anxiety attack whenever she's in such a situation. So she avoided the elevator in favor of the stairs because she figured she'd feel better about that. Boy was she wrong! We went up about 5 stories with no windows or doors or a comprehensible way of knowing how far you've been or have to go. She started panicking and wanted to go back down but the side we were on is only meant for going up! So my brother and I had to assist her and reassure her that everything would be alright. She got relief with the few windows we did come across and I think there was a gift shop about halfway up. By the grace of God, she made it to the top of the base though. Going back down wasn't as bad for her, but overall, it was a cool experience for us all. Oh she's also afraid of heights... so yeah...

  • I climbed up to the crown in 1993 and loved every minute of it. Definitely not the easiest climb, but very well worth it if you have the chance. I didn't get to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower, sadly, but I got to stand under it and feed the ducks. I've always thought the connection between the two was pretty cool.

    • I went up the Statue of Liberty in the early sixties and only up to the crown the public could go. There was no elevator then and there was another staircase going down. Even then you couldn’t go up to the torch. So…

    • Same here, my parents brought me to the statue in 1993. I was 4 years old and what I remember is I had to take rests so many times along the stair to the top and people passing me but I managed to get to the crown. I’m from far away in Indonesia and hopefully can visit the statue one more time. Thanks for the animation that recalls my memories back then.

    • I went in November, 1992. Saturday the 14th of that month, to be exact. On my way up the stairs I saw a bloke coming down who seemed to be having a devil of a job maintaining his stance. It was only on my way down that I realized why - since I had to come down in a similar posture. I still don`t know what it is that causes this, though.

We know dudes' AWESOME! Well then, Yay for me, cause I'm just finding out about this guy and, after Sub-ing, I hope hes got more videos!!! "Okay now, calm down! You dont want to watch them all up-right away," I always tell myself when finding a really good channel, "You remember the Zefrank binge you just came off of? you dont want that to happen again, do you?" No...,3 days without sleep beats me up too much...,I'm now a full fledged Octopologyst, but..., yeah, it was worth it!

Nice documentary/ explanation but Id like to see how they did the scaffolding without cranes back then. The scaffolding from 1986 was sent about 90 miles away to Red Hook, NY
