    • That would be a Texan. Lying to shift the blame away from Texas and blame it on something not being implemented yet. They were warned. Texas should have no say in anything related to disaster relief. Go ahead and succeed. What makes Texas so damn great is the might of the federal government that has your backs.

  • I used to live in Texas. Deregulated power was a joke. It wasn’t cheaper. It was twice as much. And people were so proud of their “free market” energy not even realizing they were getting screwed

    @altimmons@altimmons3 жыл бұрын
    • Statistically your comment is inaccurate. On a localized level for a given period you may be correct but across the country on averaged deregulated wholesale markets are about 4-6 cents/KWh cheaper.

      @brian2440@brian24403 жыл бұрын
    • @@brian2440 I mean it wasn’t a brief period of time. It was 5 years. Recently. But it’s true it was a singe place. Perhaps it’s better elsewhere. I take it you don’t live in Texas. It’s hellaciously confusing. There’s hundreds of plans. They all offer different things - higher rates in day but free after 9 pm. Weekends free. Flat rates etc etc. and all this is really hard to compare one to the other. The power all comes from the same place. And that’s the other thing. Though you argue the rates are the same or cheaper - you also have to pay $30/mo for a “delivery” service- oncor was ours- they actually connect you to the grid- So now there’s 4 people in the market each taking profit. The power plants. The whole sellers and main grid. The brokers who write the plans and buy the power and make it confusing because the more they confuse you the more they make- did I mention there are Hundreds? And the distributor and local grid operator. It’s not cheaper. The costs are obfuscated. You can tell it’s not cheaper by all the power executives driving around Dallas in Maseratis. It’s like Atlanta’s deregulated trash collection. In a given neighborhood each house has a different trash company. It varies house to house to house. And each with a different collection day. Now instead of trucks having to travel every street in the city and area- each street has to be traveled 8 times. And they pay much more. Don’t get me wrong. There are major downsides to utility monopolies. Cable companies are testament to that. My bro in law works for the local power utility- where I live now - for the past year - and he has a good job doing next to nothing as far as I can tell (he may strongly disagree with this, but it’s what I see) He’s always “ working from home “ which usually means 5 min on the phone and the rest the day watching golf... so yea. Here costs vs income don’t matter because whatever they spend they get but no more than a set Amt. no incentive to gouge. But none to save. But unfettered capitalism isn’t categorically better like the politicians paid by these companies want you to believe. Then because profits are unfettered you pay as much as the market will bear while the bare minimum is spent to support you.

    • @@altimmons I used to live in Texas for 15 years, so I’m well aware of the system. I also work in this industry so I know it’s a heck of lot more complicated than these news agencies let on. However my rates on based on a national average comparing generalized average rates, which at the end of the day are simplifying things to get down to a relatively basic number. There are a lot of different plans, so of course the nationalized average is not reflective of every plan under any scenario. The biggest issue I have is that the media coverage of the event made it seem like deregulated wholesale market were primarily responsible for the grid systems in Texas, when in reality they are two entirely seperate conversations, and half of the country have this market system in place. So to suggest that degregualted wholesale markets are responsible for a lack of winterization is bit off the mark when these same systems exist in New York, Massachusetts, Oregon, Ohio, Illinois etc and the same issues dont necessarily exist. I will also add that a lot of people are making remarks like the lack of infrastructure upgrades is solely a Texas problem..... oh you naive children..... EPRI and ASCE estimate that over 60% of the US Electrical grid is over 40 years old and over 25% was hasn’t been upgraded since the 1960s. Most warranties for this infrastructure is between 30-50 years. Do the math..... This isn’t exclusively Texas problem and if you think it is that’s serious misjudgment Even in the 2011 FERC and NERC winter assessment for grid failures in the Southern US, severe equipment deficiencies and lack of regulatory requirements were found. Yes for ERCOT but also in WECC and SERC network systems. Clearly these politicians didn’t actually read that report......

They were raised a certain way, taught certain things, and they barely question anything when it comes to the beliefs that were passed onto them. If you study the evolution of republican and democrat representatives' values, you can see how each generation slowly shifted from the old idealogies. This created quite a switch between dems and reps. Let's not forget who pushed for ending slavery. Check the election data as well, run some deeper analytics, you'll see how each generation and geography played a huge role in Trump getting dumped (so glad). Hopefully in a couple decades, things will be better and everything will be more transparent.

The carbon footprint in this process is not offset by the wind or solar process. Don't forget the blades on the windmills. Made from composite materials. I don't know but maybe a petroleum product. They are not biodegradable. Need replacing every 15-25 years. While it sounds good in theory. The green deal is a far cry from ideal. Not hating on it. The technology is not quite there. The part that makes people mad is politicians saying it must be done by a certain date. You can't build what is not financial viable. • Yours are winterized, because you experience deep cold temps often enough. The folks in charge in Texas decided they don't want to invest, because the use-cases are so scarce. When there is no regulation that would force them to, there is no economic incentive for it. From the business owners' perspective, at worst, this is a few days of lost revenue in maybe a decade. As opposed to millions upon millions in up-front investment costs and more millions in maintenance every year to keep the equipment ready *in case* a winter storm hits. It's precisely what market forces would predict would happen, because the only damage the people who pay would suffer is so miniscule in proportion to the cost, they won't foot the bill. Whereas the people who do suffer, would likely still pay collectively if the government insisted on regulating the power companies (and then letting them charge the costs to the consumer). But that would be blatant communishm or something... *eyeroll*
