While many wealthy citizens and leaders of the young United States fled the city, the free Black community of Philadelphia worked alongside Dr. Benjamin Rush to help the sick and impoverished left behind.   • I love these stories of Black History. It gets lost as time goes on. I remember learning of the “Yellow Fever” when I was younger but sure don’t remember the heroisms of the Black community that risked their lives and own money to take care of white folk…. I’ll be sure to pass this along to my grandchildren and theirs! Thank you. 😊

    • Interestingly, when all the rumors about profiteering and whatnot were going on, Benjamin Rush (who stayed in the city and saw what happened) also came to the defense of the Black population, refuting the accusations and describing their heroism in the newspapers.

They struggled to find volunteers, so they went to the black people and asked them to risk their lives, then asked for more black help for free, then got mad and spread rumors of them capitalizing off the misery when they asked for money to pay the people risking their lives everyday. And still short changed them. What video did you watch?

  • Yellow fever is spread by a species of mosquito common to areas of Africa and South America. Vaccination is recommended before traveling to certain areas. Mild cases cause fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Serious cases may cause fatal heart, liver, and kidney conditions. No specific treatment for the disease exists. Efforts focus on managing symptoms and limiting complications.

    • I can attest that tobacco smoke does make you less likely to be bitten by mosquitos. Whenever me and my buddies go camping the smokers never get bitten nearly as often as the non-smokers.

  • I can’t remember how old I was, but I read the historical fiction book Fever 1793 and it sparked my interest in this part of history. So dark when we didn’t know about all the ways to help, so many lives lost!

    • Agreed but when it does at least we can learn more in how to, prevent, prepare, or even stop it from spreading and get rid of it or at least manage it. History repeating itself gives us a chance to change how we handled things and make them better in the future.....still sucks though

Thanks to having so many repeating viruses we now have cures for many illnesses that would have killed us although it's still sad to hear how many people died to any virus

  • New Orleans had been having almost annual yellow fever epidemics since 1825, possibly earlier. I don't think records were kept in New Orleans reliably before then.

We can't really learn much from this outbreak as everyone was ignorant of the cause and control of the disease. It was not rationally motivated but done out of ignorance. Everyone died equally ...
