Alexander Popov dominated the men's sprint freestyle discipline at the Barcelona Games, winning gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle events and silver medals in the 4x100m freestyle relay as well as the 4x100m men's medley.

Michael who? Phelps ain't got nothing on Popov. It's all about the fastest and Popov was the fastest. Put him one of those speed suits they all wore in Beijing and he'd have owned the lot of them.

Obscure strokes? There are only 4 strokes in the sport. None are obscure. And you are forgetting the fact that in the 200m freestyle, Phelps was the former two-time world champion, former olympic-champion, and former two-time record holder. So he is also fast in the freestyle as well. Not to mention that Phelps is actually faster IN TEXTILE than Popov in the 100 free. He went 48.08 in the lead-off leg of the 4x100 at the 2011 world championships. Compared to Popov's 48.21.

Phelps is the greatest swimmer the world has ever seen. In the long run, it will be Phelps, not Popov who will be talked about for years to come.
How can Phelps be the greatest when he's not even the fastest?! Surely you have to be the best at what you do to be considered for greatness?! Phelps is great at obscure swimming strokes like butterfly and breaststroke. Best = fastest like Usain Bolt and Phelps is not the fastest hence NOT the best.
