My dad died when I was 30. I am gay, and never grew up loving him very much. I was very much embarrassed by how he teased me and made me feel. I felt very alienated by him growing up. I was the first born and named after him. He fought hard to make me exactly like him. I rebelled. I hated him. We didn’t talk much in my teens, and he was diagnosed with liver failure when I was 17. We spent the last 13 years getting to know each other and finding common ground. I learned to love, respect and admire things about him. It was great. Then he slowly died in front of me. I literally watched him try to stay alive. Nightly calls. Long conversations about life and the past. He apologized for everything. For how he used to make me feel. Told me he didn’t know any better. I learned a lot about him during this hard time. I learned a lot of things I needed to know, as well as things I didn’t want to. My dad fought a lot of battles. He wasn’t given much in life, and lived a totally different life than I did. But somehow we were meant to coincide. Meant to challenge and learn from each other. I will never forget him. I will always love him. And when people tell me I look like him, I appreciate it more than I ever have. I’m his son. He is my dad. No matter how different we are, we are family. This song means more than I can explain.

This song reminds me of when I came home for R & R from Iraq only to end up watching my dad die from cancer, he was at the VA hospital in Palo Alto, my girlfriend at the time, who was such a huge part of my life, she collapsed in my arms when we walked in his room and saw that his brother had pulled the plug, that song managed to come on the radio at the same time, while we were at around the same location on 280 pretty much for an entire week straight, beautiful blue skies, beautiful drive, and that song would come on the radio. That song will always remind me of 2005. I miss you Dad.

That’s the mark of a top quality song (and ofc, musicians and songwriter(s)). Ever since about ~2005, I’ve felt that true “hit songs” like these, ones they’ll play 10 and 20 years from now and we’ll all instantly recognize them and enjoy them together - don’t seem to happen anymore. My theories are not the common trope notion that “music these days sucks, it was the best when I was a kid” because everyone middle aged says the same thing. I think it’s the fact that the internet exploded wide open the true vastness of musicians really out there. Suddenly anyone could put their songs on KZhead right alongside the big dogs, and potentially get noticed and become famous. And FM radio 📻 obviously has dwindled, as people have superior on-demand CD quality digital options, many commercial-free. As long as radio was king, everyone was essentially restricted to hearing only a very narrow little group of hit bands selected by record companies, so those bands (including Green Day) became huge. But today it’s nothing like that. Without any central listening platform where “everybody” is anymore, no new songs/bands can really get that big anything like they did in the days of FM radio. People decry that like it’s a shame or that it sucks; I think it’s actually a revolution in the art of music because now the playing field has been truly leveled, and anyone in their bedroom can have a shot at success. Even Justin Bieber came from KZhead (not that he has any songs we’re still hearing 10 years later, but he did become huge starting from nothing).

In 1995 I was 14 years old. I'd skipped school with my best friend and we took the bus to downtown Columbus, Ohio, and we were just walking around, smoking and drinking. Green Day was playing at The Newport that night. As we were walking, a guy on a bike pedaled by and we were like "hey, Trey Cool, Trey Cool!" It's funny, because Dookie had just blown up but they were still headlining a tour of smallish venues. Regardless, we were poor, couldn't afford much, and just happened to notice it was Trey on the bike. He came back around and was the sweetest, kindest, funniest, greatest person ever. Just chatting with us, all of the hundreds of people in line for the show feet away unaware of who he was. So he took us around the back, where the rest of the band was standing, smoking cigarettes, and we chatted with them briefly. Then he just let us in the back door before the ticket holders were even allowed entry. One of my favorite stories of all time, and I have A LOT of stories from that time. They were all just so nice and talented, and Trey in particular was one of the greatest people of all time, he just had that aura and was just so sweet and nice. I wish somehow he'd ever know what a great memory that was for me and Kelli.

Couple of years ago I found one of his photo while I was cleaning the house for diwali festival. He might have been 16 or 17 years old in that picture, planning to get a tattoo of that pic sometime in future. I also remember downloading this whole album from torrent back in 2009 with a dial up connection. 20 minutes just to download 1 mp3 song and almost 3 hrs to download the video. Been 10 years since I first heard this song and it still has that chilling essence. Billie Joe with his quintessential hairstyle and the Les Paul Mini. couldn't get any better.

Christ, whether this song is about a lovey dovey couple, separated by war, as depicted in the songs official video, or this is the emotions of a kid having lost his beloved father, it sure sends the chills up me and is my favourite Green Day song ever, his dad would be super proud of him, regardless of this song but this song just is the bees.

Lyrics- Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends Like my fathers come to pass Seven years has gone so fast Wake me up when September ends Here comes the rain again Falling from the stars Drenched in my pain again Becoming who we are As my memory rests But never forgets what I lost Wake me up when September ends Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends Ring out the bells again Like we did when spring began Wake me up when September ends Here comes the rain again Falling from the stars Drenched in my pain again Becoming who we are As my memory rests But never forgets what I lost Wake me up when September ends Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends Like my father's come to pass Twenty years has gone so fast Wake me up when September ends Wake me up when September ends Wake me up when September ends

Um... What? Yes they can... And are... ALL THE TIME. Almost any hip hop performance, and most of the major pop bands on tour. You really think Gaga can sing perfectly live while running around and changing her outfit/stage set 100 times a show? She's a talented singer, but she's doing far more miming up there then people realize. Most big pop band shows are like free range imitation Broadway productions. But yes, this was a good performance, and it was mixed excellently by the sound guy.

Yep!! The Metallica performance of Master of Puppets 2-3yrs ago was sick as fuck. Also - get this - I was not a fan whatsoever of Billie Eilish... UNTIL THIS MORNING!!! ....when I randomly clicked her Howard Stern live acoustic performances of: 👉🏼All The Good Girls Go to Hell kzhead.info/sun/jatvqKWli31jnqM/bejne.html 👈🏼 (song begins @ 0;45) and When The Party Is Over : kzhead.info/sun/jd6HpduifKSPn30/bejne.html And HOLY FUCK I WAS BLOWN AWAY!! 😵😱👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😲 She’s the best female singer in a decade!!! And I’m a random 39 yo American dude into mainly 80’s-00’s heavy metal and hard rock! *Trust me you’ll be shitting yourself* when you watch her All The Good Girls Go to Hell on Howard Stern! *The sound quality is absolutely 100% the crispest vocal recording I’ve heard on KZhead,* unreal! And listen to the delicate final consonants of the last 2 words in When The Party’s Over (the K and T in “like that”j, man with headphones it’s like she’s standing here leaning in to sing directly into my ear, fucking unreal. I swear it’s even better than most CDs sound. 💿 I know a Green Day video is the last place you’d ever expect anyone to recommend hearing Billie Eilish and I had no respect for her to begin with either, but seriously, she’s THAT talented! Her “Bad Guy” hit doesn’t come close to showcasing the talent she possesses. I’m a new fan I’m not gonna lie!

This song always reminds me nostalgically of good times from music college, but I never saw it performed live and I didn’t know the meaning behind it...now I know it has a whole new place in my heart and watching Billie Joe’s body language here as he performs it - the way he bows his head in the quiet parts like he’s emotionally exhausted and giving in to his grief, almost like a mark of respect to his father is so moving. I’m actually crying despite having heard the record so many times. And his facial expressions... What a performance. Such an amazing artist and amazing band as a whole of course. Much respect ✊❤️

Basically 50 years old and he’s stil got the same voice as in 90s. This man never ages.
TheChenDrums his voice has gotten better; more mature imo
He looks awesome for his age. So cool and hot 👌🔥
TheChenDrums , he did age huge difference
His voice was deeper and a little more punk in the 90s, which is what I prefer, but I'd still say its aged well
Wait what? He's 50 now? Shit :'(
You know you're getting old when people call this classic rock.
Holy shit, man...I thought you were joking, but I just Googled it and I'll be damned...the gravity of your statement hit me like a ton of bricks, and seriously had a profound impact on me. I'm so fucked...
Lol, I knew I was getting old when I started hearing Guns N Roses on the classic rock station. This makes me feel even older.
Seriously right!
isn't this a ballad....and soft rock.
Classic pop punk

Okay I love this variation of Billie does not age comment.
Maquillaje.
Or he just sold his soul like the rest of celebrities and entertainers in general. uses the anti aging practices that the occult and elite use.
I clicked this solely to see if it was an old video lol
Fook' he ages but just perfectly tho
I always thought people were exaggerating on how young Billie looks in his late 40s,but holy hella mega shit does he look young in this video.
I thought this was an old video
Well part of that is definitely tv magic. He is starting to show aging signs if you look on his Instagram
It’s the Baywatch haircut
When was this?
I know lol for a second I thought maybe this was just a video from years ago that the channel was posting as a highlight or something.

holy shit I was thinking about this too, I would be so scared of missing a note lmao
omg that's right. never thought of that. everyone will notice if you mess up even once. that must be so stressful
This song means more than I can explain.
this is deep, mad respect for you 👑
Among one the best poetic words dedicated to a father.
Complete opposite of James in Dyers Eve
Cliff?? Is that you?
Nope *THE* best
Tony Stark Woah what? I only am familiar with Dyers Eve from Guitar Hero Metallica and it’s brutal double bass drumming but I never paid attention to the lyrics, now you got me curious.
AgentCliff Burton how do you even know that?
"As my memory rests But never forgets what I lost."
Rogério Lopes my favorite line
"Wake me up, when September ends"
You could see the seriousness in the whole band faces, knowing this is a hard song for Billie to sing, which just show how much they stick together and support eachother through thick and thin
Wake me up when April ends and the Coronavirus is gone.
coronavirus is gone, im from the future
True bro. ! 😭
Javier Bonilla no shit.
Jajaja XD
Mate I admire your optimistic approach.. End of April though as much as I would fucking love that to be the case.. Is unlikely
The intro always takes me back in time when everything is good and simple.
THAT is quite astute!!! Many regards!
The pendulum will swing and come back. Punk rock won't be dead.
True
Yeah me too dude
Amen!
Hearing the tiny imperfections in Billie's tone makes me respect them a lot. It makes them feel human, as well as no autotune magic
wayouttatune2 Sounds great doesn’t equal perfect though. There were some flat notes but thats just rock who really cares. I just noticed it because of how long I’ve been doing music
@wayouttatune2 it does sounds great but his voice got a bit higher as years went by. This song is already 16 years old ! But again, they still sound great and even such little changes remind us how far they have gone since American Idiot came out... as we did too :')
Imperfections smh haha u funny
@wayouttatune2 i mean he kinda sings out of tune every now and then so I'm not sure what YOU are hearing.
@wayouttatune2 there were a few voice cracks, nothing too serious
This song reminds me of when I came home for R & R from Iraq only to end up watching my dad die from cancer, he was at the VA hospital in Palo Alto, my girlfriend at the time, who was such a huge part of my life, she collapsed in my arms when we walked in his room and saw that his brother had pulled the plug, that song managed to come on the radio at the same time, while we were at around the same location on 280 pretty much for an entire week straight, beautiful blue skies, beautiful drive, and that song would come on the radio. That song will always remind me of 2005. I miss you Dad.
P.S. And this video always hits home, kzhead.info/sun/gblyetN-gp6XjWg/bejne.html When you can recognize the sound of the .50 Cal, well, you know you've done this shit for way too long.
I dont get how this comment doesn't have much likes
Lost my dad at 19 in September 2016, september is a hard month for me too. I loved this song growing up but it took on so much more meaning after his passing. Shits hard. I miss you, dad.
Mike Dirnt hasn't changed since the Dookie era
+Jon de Rooy Actually, the whole band has aged gracefully.
He still looks like a 40 year old...
Tre sure did get older .... but Billy, some cosmetic magic is going on
go watch Basket case video and try again.
Are you on crack or meth?! To say that is just simply stupid.
Never gets old...
Never my friend
Like him and mike
i know right! dude doesn't age- wait
Neither does Billy
I really relate to this song. When I was ten years old, my father passed in September as well. And I'm also a musician that has struggled to write about him, but hearing this song and getting into Green Day is slowly allowing me to create music. I'm thirteen, coming up on fourteen, and I'm very thankful for this band.
I'm 19 going on 20. Going back into guitar. I hope that even a year later you kept up at the music stuff. It's super healing, I found.
I’m sorry for your loss
Hey Kevin... Hope you rocking the music still... Take care bro
Enjoy it, embrace it, and believe in yourself. You will go far.
Talent. They sound 100% like an edited studio version, and this was live on a talkshow...Insane.
I aint gonna lie. This was a hell of a tear jerker when I was a young punk who knows all about missing his father.
Damn..
These are the most fitting words to describe this song! It has a special meaning to me, my Grannie died on September 15th two years ago Thanks for these words :)
❤️
@@SirTato1992 my granny had two heart attacks two days ago and also has bladder cancer. Green Day inspired me to write songs through all the pain. My mum is very ill too and I wrote songs about it to help me. I think my band thinks we need songs for a lighter mood 😅😅 Sort about your loss btw
Sounds fun
Nice lie
Whoa, thats a really good story, wish that happened to me, too bad I wasn't even born that year 😅

It's not only Billie who doesn't age, even Mike and Tre too
They ain't got time to age - too busy rocking
Video Giver I think they look aged. They age like fine wine though.
And Jason White
Tre Cool gets seriously underrated in the pantheon of drummers. The guy can act like a psycho and play complex songs flawlessly at the same time.

Billie, Mike and Tré are still the only official members of the band. The rest are just touring members that help make the live experience sound better :)
In the studio they are still a trio tho.
give them one more album and they will be like Bon Jovi live with like 20 musicians
yep, though i think they were using a backup guitarist as early as the 'Warning' days
5:25 his young voice appear for some seconds, love this song since I was 10. Now I´m 22.
Chris Fer Hi 5! man
That broke my heart
same here man
Too me broh
Same bud
such a unique voice... I just know everytime its greenday singing bc of that voice
Yes, me too
Wow! The raw emotion and power of this song really comes across here as a result of the background info at the beginning, and then the amazing imperfections in his voice. The raw, dryer sound of the mix compared to the studio recording also gives it a more dramatic quality. This is an awesome performance.
I always love howard‘s commentary when someone finishes playing a song in his show
Same here! Especially as a fan I just wanna ask all the questions too
How's your cubicle at Sirius?
Mathias Emanuel “That is some fuckin riff...Mother Fucker!” Couldn’t have been said any better Howard.
Leonardo Neves Haha the only other one I remember Howard saying “Motherfucker!” was after Metallica’s beastly performance of Master of Puppets maybe 2-3 yrs ago. It’s on KZhead with millions of hits.
I fuckin died 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I lost my father when I was 7. It's been 20 years now and I feel sad that I don't even remember his voice anymore. Don't have no video tapes of him as my family wasn't that well off back in the days.
✌️✌️✌️
This is incredibly saddening. My commiserations for this.
Akash Kumar so sorry x
Just wish you to have more moments of happiness in life. Sorrow..
I feel you my friend
One of the best bands ever with some of the best songs
Howard has seen the greatest performances of all time in his little studio. What a life.
I love Billie Joe Armstrong... Neil Armstrong reached moon but you reached the bottom of our hearts.
I Love Me! Wow what a poem! Jus loved it GreenDay forever
Neil was his great second uncle (I think)
Nice
Fuckin right!!!💋💋💋
I've never once got teary eyed to this song until hearing the origin behind it. Now I'm sitting here crying a little.
TheSOlmos #metoo
I know I never even had a father and it still hurts me to hear when someone is lucky enough to have one and they pass especially at such a young age in the son or daughters life,I could only imagine the pain they must go through just losing my sister was hard but to lose a man who stays by you loves you takes care of you in so many ways...I’m a single father myself and pray to God he allows me to be here for my kids as long as I possibly can....hope you’re having a great day or night...🙂
Same exact thing I was thinking. I’ll never hear this song the same way. Billie was so honest and sincere in the way he responded to Howard. “Do you still think about your father when you perform this song?” “I think about him every day..”
Same :(
Fantastic band. Love their music and their sound. Great songwriters.
3:39 Look at how happy and appreciative Howard is... real music
I was 9 when I lost my mom, this’ll be the 10th anniversary of her passing and I listened to this song for almost 2 hours straight on her birthday.
I'm sorry for your loss. I hope that you're catching up well and yes, she's in better place now :)
Here for you
I'm so sorry for your loss, Jacob.
Wow,god bless your mom
In sorry for you buddy ❤️❤️ god is with u
Bands from 90s are literally immortal.
Figuratively*
utter bollocks
I don’t know. About half of them ODed or deleted themselves. Some incredible musicians and people. But too many gone.
@@mattcantstop He thought immortal in a musical way, not a physical way..
Nirvana…?
I have always loved this song, but it took on new meaning when I lost my mom in 2018. I was 41 and am still having a very hard time with it. I can't imagine losing a parent at 10 years old. That must have really wrecked him. 😔 I just want to give Billie Joe a big hug. 💜
As my memory rests, but never forgets what i lost.
As I read this he said it
Amazing lyrics
Long Live Green Day ❤️
MV Agusta .... protection at ALL cost.....
❤
Yes!!💚💚💚
Oh my GOD!!! THAT IS JUST SO AWESOME!!!
this song used to be my anthem when I was young without knowing the context of the song. Listening to it again brings back memories and now with a better understanding of the song, just brought it to a whole new level..
We're all still young!
Wow sound better than I expected live. That’s the true test of talent a live show can’t be faked.
bs1820 yea it can lol
Um...
The sound in HS studio is so good...
my young age is marked by this song... Amazing..
1 minute ago I was watching Twice dancing, now I'm crying watching this song.
Green day is an amazing band
*sextet
the nostalgia is REAL
I love this song for 2 reasons. The emotion for me is everything. When my mum was in hospital and couldn't breath properly I listened to this hoping she'd be ok. And, 2 days ago my rock school did this song and I was the lead drummer instead of the instructor!
Such raw talent ❤❤❤❤❤ I love you Billie.😊
This is instrumentally the best version of this song I have ever heard. Great job!
totally agree!
Yup sounded near perfect to studio version incredible performance
👍🏼👍🏼
And once again, Howard sterns studio continues to be the best sounding room in the history of music
That some FREAKIN' GREAT MUSIC till today!
Even the background music in this song is full of emotions...
My mum died in September and this has always meant loads to me. One year I turned on the radio in the car first thing ln the morning on her anniversary and it was playing. True story 😅😅
my dad died a month ago, in September.. this is the first time for me hearing this song since his death.. it feels so weird now that it has a personal meaning for me too...
So sorry ❤💐
Feels bad 😭😭😕😕
I'm 43 grew up listening to these guys ,and I always do . Songs like Disappearing Boy, At the library brings my teenage years back.Feels good.
Love 1039 smooth. Love the lyrics of that album
El Rompe Pendejos. Association. Damn I love those songs! Too bad I wasn’t Born yet when they released (I’m 15)
Well Billy Joel is 47
Paper lanterns is one of my favorites.
I've always love the keyboard on this song, especially in live's versions. Green Day, forever!
Wake me up when corona ends! I miss everyone so much. Including all of you whom read this. All the best to everyone. May we all rock out together again one fine day!!!!!!! Xoxoxo
This song, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and 21 Guns have always been, in my opinion, their greatest works. American Idiot, especially, is that kind of album you'd always enjoy. Thank you for the memories, and thank you for your music. I hope I'd catch you performing live this upcoming year 💙
Seif Eddine Jesus of Suburbia is definitely up there. A couple others but I feel you!
An underrated one is Restless Heart Syndrome imo
Dookie will always be their Magnus Opus
I love those and this one and Basket case
Agree with you guys!
*Using headphones is recommended* *set the volume to the max* 👌🏽
We're collectively loosing our hearing. Blast it
👍🏼👍🏼
Blast it real good
Losing my hearing, at least it will be this epic song that I listen to before my hearing goes
How you lost your hearing in taste
I watched this about a week ago and didn’t think much of it, and now two days ago my dad got in an accident at work and died, and now I can truly understand the pain that Billie went through
I can hear the pain in his voice
Whenever I hear sasafras roots, or pulling teeth, or she, I'm taken straight back to school. Still going to this day. insane.
ben russell One day you’ll graduate!
You still going to school?😂
It's good to see Billie singing with guitar..had missed that lately.
didnt know billie dads. rip THATS why billie has so much emotion in this song so good. Love from NEPAL.
Instantly brings me back to when I was a kid. I remember when they first came on the radio.
Thank god for televising these interviews and performances again... Another great interview, appearance, and performance that I am incredibly thankful for. There will never be any as good as Stern, period.
Studio sound is phenomenal 😍❤️
I just really want to give him a hug.
Howard talks to Billie like he's the only one in the group, I would like to hear what Tré and Mike think too.
This song is personal to Billie. The others can’t give any kind of valuable insight into it.
that's kind of a howard thing lmao
To be fair they didn't write the song
I hope my impact on my kids is so great that if I pass while they are still young they never forget and are inspired to do something so great... what a way to honor a parent. Green Day is incredible.
Your comment made me teary while listening to the song.. I'm also a father of 2 yr old daughter and what scare's most is not dying but never seeing my kid grew up doin something great and if all else fails she will stand up and fight again..i may not know you personally but i think you're a great dad.. Keep it up mate
Don Carroll just love em and it will be my friend
I been a fan over 20 years. People gave me shit for listening to them, said their music was garbage, but I knew they were good.
Who tf says it's garbage?
To be honest they just have 2 good album rest of them are garbage
Screw them! :)
This band is clearly underappreciated. Songwriting skills are obvious
hossein derakhshan shut up why are you even here.
Wat a band so melodic ❤
Goosebumps !! What a song it reminds me of my adolescence ...good memories
I don't know if that voice ever gets old 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Drink Water and the face😜😜one of the greatest bands!!🤟🏻🤟🏻
It sounds old
America Idiot was my first ever ringtone purchased on Tzones. GreenDay is amongst the greatest bands of our generation
Look there if is not the bestest rsrs
So true, probably THE BEST!
Tzones!!! Holy shit
This was a legendary performance
This song always reminds me nostalgically of good times from music college, but I never saw it performed live and I didn’t know the meaning behind it...now I know it has a whole new place in my heart and watching Billie Joe’s body language here as he performs it - the way he bows his head in the quiet parts like he’s emotionally exhausted and giving in to his grief, almost like a mark of respect to his father is so moving. I’m actually crying despite having heard the record so many times. And his facial expressions... What a performance. Such an amazing artist and amazing band as a whole of course. Much respect ✊❤️
Billie’s vocals is just 🔥 These guys don’t age and their music doesn’t get old. Can’t wait for the hella mega tour!!
"Here comes the rain again..." Favorite part :)
One of my favorites on my playlist
I’ve seen them four times. They never disappoint.
Man. Hearing this song just reminds me of how awesome it was growing up in the early 2000’s.
Hell yeah man!
To be still consistent hats off to GREEN DAY
The reason they’re so consistent is because the singing was never the best. So he still sounds good now, but the music hasn’t changed one bit that’s why we all love green day
This song is poetry is Art wow how amazing this band are
Great way to cherish memories of my father and my mother who loved me unconditionally with this song
