Porsche & Audi v USA's Secret Weapon: DRAG RACE

What’s quicker - a lightweight sports car or a HUGE American pick-up? Well, it’s time to find out!
We’ve got our hands on an Audi TTS and a Porsche 718 Cayman, and they’re about to go head-to-head against the absolutely massive Hennessey Mammoth!
Let’s see how they compare. Starting with the Audi, it’s powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo that can deliver 320hp and 400Nm of torque. It powers all four wheels and it tips the scales at 1,420kg.
Then we have the Porsche. It’s also packing a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo, however, it only powers the rear wheels, and can only produce 300hp and 380Nm. It’s lighter than the Audi, though, weighing in at 1,365kg.
Then we have the Mammoth! For starters, it costs more than both the other cars combined - £122,000, compared to £47,000 each for either the Audi or the Porsche. It can also produce SO much more power than the other competitors, with its 6.2-litre supercharged V8 able to produce 1026kg and 1,314Nm!

    • Somethings clearly wrong here. Stock trx’s run a 12.4 quarter mile here in the states and lightly tuned trxs with just a pulley and e85 they run 10.8 at 129 mph.

  • 700~hp difference made me think the race would be different. This is a big lesson about weight, aero, tires, maybe more Edit: I'm not against trucks, and I knew weight mattered, I just didn't think it mattered this much. I mean 700hp hp more is insane

  • I've said it many many times - get a light tree with a sensor that can measure false starts. Considering how drag racing is the primary theme of this channel, it would make sense to use one. It doesn't have to be fancy but it would assure more fairer starts. Heck, you can even sync the woman's verbal countdown to the actual lights themselves to make it more interesting.

    • @@skiptastic1000 maybe but there's almost always some amount of jumping ahead before the start or gripes about who started too early. They're plenty of fun to be had on the channel but you always want to get a good, fair start to a drag race no matter what. Seriously, no one is going to say, "Oh, Mat got a half second jump in that race! No matter, it's all in good fun." Trust me, if someone got a half second jump on Mat, and he noticed it, you think he'll dismiss it? I think not. You can have fun and nonsense but still, everyone wants to be fair.

  • Obviously the weight difference plays a role but what some don’t realize makes a HUGE HUGE difference is the rotating mass in the wheels tires of that truck. Makes a massive difference if you put it on say lightweight wheels and street tires just for shits and giggles

    • No it really isn't a huge difference at all. For an average road car the rotational inertia of the wheels, tyres and brake discs is in the order of 1 10,000th of the total inertia of the car. Even if the mammoth has 10 times that, its still only 0.1% of the total inertia. Source: mechanical engineer who works in motorsport

  • I thought it was funny when you drove that Ram around the UK that people were shocked as if it’s the biggest abomination they’ve ever seen. I live in Texas and this is just another truck, one of the lawn care companies has a fleet of lifted F-350’s and Silverados that make that Ram look like a Citroen hatchback 😂

  • The Porsche jumped the last two drag races. They took the last result to say the Porsche passed the 1/4 mile ahead of the TTS, when clearly the TTS was the faster car.

    • it isn't good at offroad. huge turning circle, heavy af so it gets stuck easily, and too large so it can't got in narrow trails. a suzuki jimny will beat this thing offroad. 9 out of 10 times

  • For me even a cheaper (if 60k is cheap😤😂🙆🏾‍♂️) Porsche still performs well enough. It’s like you can’t go wrong getting a Porsche as a daily especially the more affordable ones - they brake quickly 😮

As for reliability/efficiency if you seriously think a Porsche flat four boxer is more reliable than a 2.0 TFSI then you obviously need Google more than I do ;)

    • @@ivydjm8939 Not an Audi fan boy at all, this is my first Audi and before making my decision I test drove lots of different competitors to the TT: SLK/SLC, Ford Mustang, BMW Z4, Porsche Boxster/Cayman. If you factor in EVERYTHING the TT is a much more complete package. Sure the Boxster (especially the S) and older 3.4 flat six are much more fun, have more steering feedback and are pleasant to drive but I am comparing 2.0 T Porsche to the 2.0 TFSI TT

    • Sounds crap though. I had the TTS but ordered mine just before the OPF addition. Mine sounded way better than the facelift car. Lots of pops and bangs, throaty exhaust note too. Definitely the pick of the TT range, although having then had the TTRS, I would say that's even better, but costs a lot more. Shame they discontinued the TT.
