Elliot Page on Coming Out as Trans and Finding Hope

2024 ж. 12 Мам.

Elliot Page says he experienced a mixture of feelings when he came out as transgender on an Instagram post in 2021.
“I felt utterly elated and beyond grateful to finally be in a place where I could accept and love myself and do what I needed to and wanted to,” the 37-year-old actor, director, and LGBTQ+ activist told the audience at the 2024 TIME100 Summit in New York City on Wednesday.
After a soulful live performance by Leslie Odom Jr. and opening remarks from TIME CEO Jessica Sibley, Page sat down with TIME Contributing Editor Sam Lansky to kick off a series of panel discussions featuring the global TIME100 community.
It’s been three years since the actor graced the cover of TIME magazine alongside his pet dog to share-in full for the first time-his journey towards publicly announcing that he is a gender non-binary transgender person.
“That cover, which was shot by a trans man, Wynne Neilly in Toronto, and having that opportunity, it meant so much,” Page said. “It was also very overwhelming, as you can imagine,” he said, adding that he was experiencing trans joy alongside feelings of anxiety, grief and anger.

    @280682pato@280682pato10 күн бұрын
    • Gender dysphoria does not disappear after transition, it gets easier, people can live, because without transition trans people generally take their own lives. Based on research it takes usually only bottom surgery to entirely eliminate gender dysphoria, we have been seeing this pattern repeatedly. This is why these people need to transition before pubert, because it increases dysphoria by damaging their body even more due to the wrong phormones flooding in. It has very little to do with happiness per se, it is not some freaking vanity, it is about rooting themselves into their own body, which takes time. This is why transition is a gradual process where the body changes constantly, it takes sometimes 7 years before the real changes can be more evident and have a bigger impact on dysphoria. It is not like one day they take cross sex hormones and next day everything is okay, lol, all of this is a process of integration and healing. When you are sick, you dont change the mind, you change the body that affects the mind.

In a world where people assume a trans person's brain is the body part there is something wrong with, while being completely unable to realize it's other parts of a body which are wrong. Your unnessecarily hostile, ignorant and judgemental comment is the crux of what is wrong, and it's nothing wrong with him. It's how he is being treated that's making him miserable. He's been through a lot.

  • Hormones effect cognition, slowing the thought process in some, & knowing how any statement can be used against someone, I believe Page is simply being thoughtful about answering! Page is quite articulate here! I've noticed a change in skin tone, along with dark rings under the eyes etc, unfortunately that goes with the territory! Remember folks, this is Pages puberty years in terms of transition! Any parents of teens out there would remember transition from male child to teen male.. Comparing Pages complexion before transition to now is not helpful. Female hormones soften a face, as in male to female, and hardens a face as in female to male transition.. Pages body language suggests a little lack of confidence, but, realistically, Page knows a lot of eyes would be searching for 'signs', which is entirely the case as evidenced by this comment section! I felt the interview went well. The answers Page gave were thoughtful & well articulated insights into where Page is currently at.. Page may need a little coaching on physical presentation, ie: posture etc.. but, hey, overall i thought it was a very informative interview!

There is a reason why suicide rate amongst transgender people is so high. You could say "oh it's because they are feeling not accepted by society". Guess what, many people feel like they are being not accepted by society, but first of all, not all of them commit suicide. Second of all, if transgender people feel that's "who they always meant to be" after the surgery and whole process, it shouldn't matter if people around them don't feel good about their decision. The problem arises, when trans person becomes more aware about the fact, that their decision 20 or so years ago was worst decision they ever made and medical consequences of this decision become more and more apparent, that's when this person snaps...

  • I'm perfectly fine with someone changing their name, if you want me to call you Elliot I think it really doesn't make any difference. If you feel the need to dress and express yourself differently because you didn't like being feminine then that's cool, I'm happy for people who can express themselves freely. However, if you want me to identify you as a male and address you as such then that's where I have to draw the line. I mean absolutely no disrespect to you as a person, but I have the belief that if you are clearly a female, then it shouldn't be forced upon me to address you with the pronouns of your choosing. If you can pass as male and people are happy to accept you as one then that's great and I'm happy for you, but if someone doesn't accept you as male then you shouldn't force it upon them. I think you would be much happier if you accepted that you are a female instead of trying to pass of as something that you're not, that doesn't mean you have to change anything about yourself, only to continue to express yourself exactly as you are but accept that if people want to identify you as female then you should embrace it. I think that this would be an honest and healthy way to present yourself as a trans person.

    • HE! He was born a male based on gender identity developed in utero, trans people are born in the opposite sex in ways that matter! They are literally born intersex based on their unique physiology, and yet people like you weaponize cultural definition of sex against the actual definition of their sex. The reason most trans people are sad is because of the way how the world treats them, just like you, it is traumatizing over and over again, each purposeful misgendering is a psychological violence that is able to create micro-traumas, that over time accumulate and cause a major trauma which then leads to a suicide! It is people like you that make them sad, and that have blood on their hands, we do not live in a vacuum, do you understand that? It is unbelievable how oblivious people are. All of this has been multiple times documented through extensive research and therapy.
