Considered man´s best friends, dogs are known for their loyalty, desire to please; and of course, high intelligence. As valued members of our families, dog owners know that dogs are indeed intelligent, after all, they can be taught to do so many things! However, there are some striking differences among individual dog breeds when it comes to their level of intelligence. As you can probably imagine, measuring canine intelligence is very difficult but there is an internationally recognized study that has done just that. Published by Stanley Coren, a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, the book is called “The Intelligence of Dogs” and based on this study, Coren also published a list ranking individual dog breeds by their level intelligence. This ranking is now generally accepted as a valid description of the differences among dog breeds in terms of the trainability aspect of dog intelligence. So now, is your pooch one of the smartest dogs in the world? There is only one way to find out. Read on to discover the 25 smartest dog breeds ever!

  • Border collies are amazing at judging things too. I was playing frisbee with my Border Collie Shilo and I threw the frisbee into the wind. Shilo instantly figured out which way the wind was blowing, ran in the opposite direction of where I threw the frisbee, sat down and waited. When the frisbee hit the wind and blew back it went exactly to where Shilo was sitting. He just sat there waiting and just jumped up from his sitting position and caught it. He knew the wind would take the frisbee and where it would go.

  • A whippet was by far the smartest dog I ever owned (or had any dealings with). I've had two on this list, Cocker & Lab, neither very bright. Not only did he learn fast such as learning to sit, give a paw & stay within hours of settling into the family home at 12 weeks he also learned how to open doors (including his latched cage) on his own. He could find it's way home (including leading the way home off lead/leash to holiday homes returning to the car in new locations etc). He learnt lots of commands both speech & visual with the kids. The most impressive to me though was always how he would act with very young children. He liked to play rough with older kids (sharing a house with four teenagers) but was always so gentle & patient around toddlers. Unfortunately for us, he suffered from separation anxiety so when our situation changed & there wasn't somebody at home most of the time he became very stressed & he had to go to a home more suited for him.

  • Australian Cattle Dog should be higher on the list. I've owned a variety of dogs for 60 years and my Blue Heeler is the smartest thing on four legs. She learned how to spell the words we didn't want to say in front of her so we started saying those things in Spanish and she has picked up on that! They aren't the most cuddly of dogs but loyal and faithful to the bone. I was very ill and in the bed for five years and this dog did not leave me. She went outside to take care of her business and to eat, but then right back beside me. Could not ask for a finer animal.

    • Nancy you are 100% correct I too owned a ACD aka blue healer and next to the border collie the two breeds are by far the most intelligent breeds out there my dog as well was the most faithful and loyal as well got him at 10wks old he went everywhere with me was so well behaved he even went to work with me and nobody disapproved everyone who met him loved him he was raised to be gentle around people and would entertain the smallest of children by playing fetch with his favorite toy a tennis ball even with his gentleness with children and people he was also very protective if anything man or animal was a threat of harm he would attack to protect a bred trait not mentioned in the video he is sadly missed

  • Old English Mastiff!!!! I've had dogs in my family since I was an infant. For my birthday three years ago my husband brought home an 11 week old English mastiff my children named her Bella and she has become an absolute joy to the entire family since I am home with her while the kids are in school and my husbands at work she has bonded with me like superglue. I cannot believe the things I have seen Bella do. I speak to her like another human being and have done so since she was a baby/puppy. I don't know if that has anything to do with her current incredible level of intelligence but I can rattle off a three sentence request and she will comply as if she were another human being. I adored all breeds of dogs they are wonderful and we are very blessed that 10 to 15,000 years ago a somewhat docile wolf hung around the outside of our caves in order to access scraps from our meals. I never expected this beautiful mastiff to also be incredible I have no idea if she is an outlier in other words a fluke and maybe just a genius in her breed as I have never had another Mastiff. As I said earlier she has brought our entire family so much fun and delight... it's easy to love a dog when they are so easy to train understand everything you say and comply with your wishes in my 40 something years of life the only dog I had before Bella who was even close to her level of cognitive brilliance was a wonderful might who was half German Shepherd and half lab the latter part was the closest that our vet could guess but it was undeniable that she had a lot of shepherd in her she was a very smart dog yet nothing like this incredible mastiff call we are so lucky to currently have. My husband always wanted a mastiff just because of the size of the dog to be honest with you I was not thrilled when he brought a puppy home because I always assumed that they were just dumb drooling Giants. Well I had to retract all of my previous ignorant thoughts as Bella has shown me that intelligence can pop up in any breed even if they're not particularly known for it and also they drool only a moderate amount when bred a certain way. Bella is a low drool , fluffy coat Mastiff. The first thing I noticed about her was that her coat was so thick even though it's not long it's very thick... I called the breeder and he told me that wasn't a mistake and explained about the genetic link between the fluffy coat and Less drool. Anyway I guess I just wanted to add this because it's important to go with your heart and get a puppy that fits your family just like humans dogs are individuals and even in a breed not known for high intelligence you could run across a genius every once in a while !!

  • I'm sure they are all incredibly intelligent, but I think the Ridgeback steals top prize. Intelligent enough to save me from a police dog almost killing me when I was a child. I had been left in the house by my friends policeman father, with the huge German Shepherd in the kitchen and a baby gate separating him from me. Almost immediately it jumped thr gate and got ready to attack, but I was lucky enough to have the family dog which knew me in the room. She jumped in between me and the GS and faced it down, giving me enough time to slip out another door behind me. I have no doubt she saved my life, and she was so intelligent to understand the situation and step in to protect me.

  • Pommeranians are stubborn, loud, lovable, cuddly, sweet, annoying, obnoxious, weird, caring, concerned, wanting, demanding, and above all wonderful. And, I miss mine so much. He was by greatest friend when I was feeling down. He also knew how to get under my skin and get on my nerves at times. However, if you want a small, friendly, sweet little ball of fluff that will live for an extremely long time and bring you a great deal of joy despite how yappy they are, Pomeranians are wonderful dogs. The smaller ones are also purse puppies for the people who like to bring their dogs everywhere. Mine was on the larger end. He also lived for 19 years. The roughest part is that they are prone to arthritis, cataracts, collapsing trachea, a loss of bowl and bladder control, and a handful of other health problems later in life. They also get to a point where they can have seasonal allergies. I truly think mine developed them because I have them. He only started getting them later in life, but they do say that dogs take on the traits of their owners. I just didn't dream that that would include literally becoming me in the spring. But, if you can handle all of that, you've got a loving companion who cares about you for their entire life.

They didn't just go hunting with their owners and merely retrieve what their owners killed, like some of the dogs on this list, they actually killed the prey/hunted alongside their owners. Any dog can be taught to fetch something, it's much harder to train a dog to kill one minute and be docile the next. My pup (Ridgeback X Bullmastiff) knows well over 60 different words, as well as hand signals for those words. And she's just a pup. My purebred Ridgeback was probably even smarter than her, but he is gone now so it's a bit hard to compare the two.

  • I had a Cocker Spaniel once and he was dumb as a box of rocks (he was grown when I got him). OTOH, I have a Chihuahua (who is generally NOT known for "smarts"). This is the single smartest dog I have ever met. In my opinion, I think the smartness of a dog is really measured by the owner's love and patience.

  • Top 3 for brains; Big french poodle[can never remember their name],German Shepard, and finally Collies. This was from several vets I asked when looking at getting a dog.I finally settled for a shepard/border collie cross and never regretted it.He saved me twice from being attacked by bears as I live in a small town in Canada where bears and deer in town are common. He never barked at the deer but when bears appeared he would lose it,barking savagely and chasing them off. He's been gone since 2007 and I still miss him.

  • I was adopted by a sheltie /dachshund mix... I guess I was the kind of guy she was looking for. An extremely alert dog who understood English better than some people I knew. She was absolutely fearless (dachshund side) and was a wonderful watchdog and protective as well... I still miss her... thinking back she was the love of my life. I was lucky that for the 12 years that I had her I had my own business which meant that she could be with me ALL the time, I never had to leave her for 8 to 9 hrs a day which was important in building a strong relationship and understanding. We went everywhere... that dog traveled more than most people... I even took here golfing and fishing... two sports she seemed to enjoy as much as I did... oh and she loved fireworks... I think the 4th of July was her favorite holiday.

Extremely smart, loyal, protective, super good watch dogs which means they do bark. Mine will bark at someone walking on the other side of the street...just to let me know 'someone is out there'. Their bark is huge and will scare away just about anything with a brain. Both Thunder and Gunnar are descended from a Best In Show at Westminster...which has only happened once I believe. Super family dogs, love kids and people in general but still excellent alarm dogs. They are not cheap to buy but are absolutely worth every penny. I love my dog !

  • I'm surprised the catahoula didn't land in the top 10. This is one of the Smartest dog breeds I've ever seen and have. I taught my catahoula Bella several things like, sit, lay, stay, down, up, left, right, wait. Those are basic things but I also taught her more advanced things like, how to attack on my cue and stop attacking on my cue. I taught her how to take down a person like a police dog fyi. Also I taught her non verbal hand commands. She listens and does what I command with no hesitation instantly. This breed is: energetic, playful, intelligent, stubborn, territorial, over protective, loving & affectionate, popular hunting dog especially for wild hogs because they are deceptively fast and strong and can climb trees better than most cats. They have an average lifespan of about 25 years so getting one is a life time commitment. My catahoula is turning 9 this Halloween and she is still energetic as a puppy and isn't showing signs of slowing down anytime soon. These dogs are NOT for the beginner level dog owner. They require a strong leader that can guide them and understands that patience is the key to overcoming their stubborn behaviors. They also require alot of time/dedication, exercise, and attention. The best way I learned to train this breed of dog is in stages. From the puppy stage make things a game like play time and practice the training. When they start growing out of the puppy stage start transitioning your training into tasks because they love to work. As they start growing into the adult stage just keep on training like routine clock work until it becomes second nature to them and they listen to you automatically.

  • For many years my best friend was an Australian dingo. I know they are not a recognized breed by the various organizations; but, having lived with one for all her life, I must say she would rank much higher in intelligence than many on your list. She understood a great deal of human speech, and acted accordingly. She was actually polite and well mannered, perhaps because I always treated her as if she was another human being, rather than a dog. She was very gentle, and excellent with children. I will always miss her deeply.

    • That's awesome! And that's why we mean breeds as a whole and not specific dogs. There are plenty of smart dogs that are breeds not on this list, but the average is what we put.

    • Sadly, here in the U.S.A. dingos are very rare. because of that, few people know about the breed. If there were enough of them so more people knew of their traits, I am sure they would have been high on your list. Since they are basically a wild dog, evolution has culled out the stupid ones and left the smartest. The same is true of wolves, I am sure you will find owners of wolves also will tell you they are much smarter than domestic dogs. "Breeding" of dogs results in the same mental degradation that happens in human lineages where there is too much inbreeding. Of course, if dingos were bred for generations as are most domestic dog breeds, they would suffer the same problems.

Our female couldn't open the door to the basement, but she could open the door to the bedroom to let out our male Weim, who could open the door to the basement. Once in the basement, they were able to get into the dog food bin that had a snap lid and a reinforcing bungee cord. They then proceeded to eat the entire contents of a 10lb bag of dog food. Very clever. ;-)

    • I've had 3 rotties..they never ever tried to pick a fight with another dog..,,other dogs who barked or growled at them just received a look like "you're an idiot" and nothing ever happened..the other dogs never really tried to do anything
