The Multi Axis Trainer, or MAT, is an icon of space exploration and astronaut training. But other than spinning round kids at Space Camp: what's it actually used for?
Thanks to Moriah and all the team at Space Camp! You can find out more about their programs for kids and for adults at www.spacecamp.com/

      @FreeStuffPlease@FreeStuffPlease4 жыл бұрын
    • @@FreeStuffPlease Computers aren't going to handle this problem. If the computers have been doing their job correctly, they would never have gotten into the kind of situation that requires this to begin with. This kind of situation is essentially a last ditch effort to hopefully regain control, but in practice, you're effectively already doomed.

    • @@yvrelna I'd imagine they'd have redudant systems in place just in case

      @HipEpic@HipEpic4 жыл бұрын
    • @@yvrelna Not necessarily. External events are not in the computer's control. And the physics of a space craft interacting with its external environment are tough. It is quite possible that a series of unexpected, low probability events led to this scenario, and then after a point conditions become favorable again, for the computer to regain control of the craft. Computers are not God like beings that can handle everything. But a computer can definitely do these types of calculations way more effectively than a human.

    • Regulary watching citations needed i come to the conclusion that mr. Scott and and his peers are educated beyond usefulness potentially leading to a greater variety of subjects they talk about. Example, Scott and friend talk about great thing friend has heard of but not the majority of people, scott goes and visits great thing, meets people there or talks with people later on about the great thing that spawn a discussion about another great thing, repeat. If this goes on then at some point Scott covered all great things and starts covering not so great things becoming an influencer.

    • Χρήστος Τζήκας the shuttle is a different shape, so won't spin the same. They use something else now

    • Gemini or similar small "canister" spacecraft have low mass and inertia. When something goes wrong it is very possible the spacecraft could rotate violently and the astronaut could get disoriented or become unconscious. The risk of the fast rotation is much less likely with large ships like space shuttle due to high inertia.

    • EasiPat - WTF. they don't use the space shuttle anymore. They use the Soyuz now which is a space capsule. I'm guessing the training now is all done in Russia and they probably have one of these there.

  • I experienced something similar... There was a setup similar to MAT at a local music festival. You paid one ticket and two guys spun you until you said you can't handle it anymore. Although it was a standing setup (so you had to engage all your muscles in order not to fall off or break your back in the middle), it was a lot of fun! I spent so much time spinning on that thing that a huge line formed and two guys kindly asked me to come tomorrow earlier in the evening to have free spins for as long as I like. 😁😁😁

  • I remember going to space camp. When my parents signed me up at the discovery store, we where told I could ride this as much as I wanted while at camp. When we arrived at camp they told us it was only once. My parents argued with them and I was allowed to ride it everyday. I looked the team challenge the money at the end of it. Would definitely recommend for those nerds that do not find it hard to quickly make new friends. If forming relationships is a challenge for you, you may find yourself feeling lonely surrounded by people you don't know.
