The Multi Axis Trainer, or MAT, is an icon of space exploration and astronaut training. But other than spinning round kids at Space Camp: what's it actually used for?
Thanks to Moriah and all the team at Space Camp! You can find out more about their programs for kids and for adults at www.spacecamp.com/

"i forgot to do the outro" oh, Tom...
Lamest excuse I have ever heard for getting another ride.
Going to try that at the park next time I go!
That was halairous!
+spim randsley seems so but look very fun I wish I could try it.
You think!?! If this weren't a simulation, your channel would be dead right now! Again!
I was in the MAT for a total of five minutes. I wasn't dizzy afterwards, but I did need to just sit straight up and keep my head forward for a while afterwards...!
2 weeks ago.. stop time traveling
Wut
Have you upgraded your camera gear recently? I think image quality has gone up quite a bit!
Tom, you keep doing this to yourself...
Absolute mad lad
This is ground control to major Tom...
I'm surprised I haven't seen this joke more often.
Put on your red shirt, Major Tom.

Yea atleast going into the future. Computers will handle this problem.
@@FreeStuffPlease Computers aren't going to handle this problem. If the computers have been doing their job correctly, they would never have gotten into the kind of situation that requires this to begin with. This kind of situation is essentially a last ditch effort to hopefully regain control, but in practice, you're effectively already doomed.
@@yvrelna I'd imagine they'd have redudant systems in place just in case
@@yvrelna Not necessarily. External events are not in the computer's control. And the physics of a space craft interacting with its external environment are tough. It is quite possible that a series of unexpected, low probability events led to this scenario, and then after a point conditions become favorable again, for the computer to regain control of the craft. Computers are not God like beings that can handle everything. But a computer can definitely do these types of calculations way more effectively than a human.
Thank you
I will never understand where Tom gets these amazing video ideas from...
From people who invite him to places.
This was linked to Destin's Thinkercon in Huntsville. I'm not sure if this was one of the official events, but space camp was involved in the event.
From people in dark alleys.
go to the pub and not get drunk, but enough to make you think of random things.
Regulary watching citations needed i come to the conclusion that mr. Scott and and his peers are educated beyond usefulness potentially leading to a greater variety of subjects they talk about. Example, Scott and friend talk about great thing friend has heard of but not the majority of people, scott goes and visits great thing, meets people there or talks with people later on about the great thing that spawn a discussion about another great thing, repeat. If this goes on then at some point Scott covered all great things and starts covering not so great things becoming an influencer.
Tom Scott has fully transformed into a beyblade
BEYBLADE BEYBLADE LET IT RIP!
This is what everything up until now was building up to.

Nice.
you do mean "Digitized" or "Digitated" 😉
They should add these to amusement parks... Looks fun
I've seen a similar attraction, not at an amusement park, but at a outdoor trance festival. Only differences, on the one for fun, you're standing and it's not done via machine, but rather by the rider (with an attendant there to help you strap in and stop).
they should just make it bigger so a lot of people could ride it at the same time
That's the problem though: You can't have more than one because your stomach needs to be in the center of rotation to avoid nausea.
I have been on something similar of this, it was realy fun and it was faster
@@m4gnum829 that wouldnt work at all. If you listened to the video
"Hi, this is MAT." "And this is Tom." "And this a sick, weird version of a bench."
😂

Hey I’ve always wondered why NASA spun astronauts around but doesn’t anymore!
Cool
Keeps me awake for nights
Probably due to them not having a manned space program any more.
because they know it's bs
I didn't know they'd stopped.
You spin me round baby right round
Safir damn it!!! Yet an other song stuck in my head.
**2 men calling themselves "ninja sex party" spins around slowly**
Nice mandelbrot.
An Infestor I love ninja sex party
Like a mandlebrot right round round round
Good thing the Gemini astronauts took part in this, as Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott had to correct a roll of almost 50 revolutions per minute during a malfunction on Gemini 8, forcing them to fire up their re-entry control system and abort the mission.
I recall a couple of instances when rotational motion happened, and was corrected successfully and the mission went on uneventfully. Without any prior training, that might have ended in disaster.
Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott never did a training on the MASTIF, ironically ... as per some sources.
2:07 The astronaut's chair would (groans) I see why people want to become astronauts

Tom Scott is the Blue Peter presenter we never got as children. But he’s the one we got as adults :)
rabrandom well I’m still a child sooo
@@fruitella196 isn't it past your bedtime?
@@Topperfalkon no, i don't exactly have a bedtime
I hope we can earn Tom Scott badges that let us get discount entry to interesting places.
@rabrandom Dude, you couldn't have put that any better if you tried! 👌
IMAGINE THE VR FLIGHT SIMULATORS YOU COULD MAKE WITH THIS SYSTEM.
the only control over it is from a motor that only spins one direction. the middle ring is powered by the motor, but the rest of it spins wildly due to being designed to be unbalanced and gravity makes it go crazy.
@@Crypt1cmyst1c there are full motion flight simulators that already do this, just in a more controlled manner.
I went to space camp in titusville back in the day. they had a centrifuge with a tilting cabin and they played a pov jet flight while they spun you up. money no object you put a 6 axis on the end of a centrifuge arm so you can load g's.
Sega R360 and R360Z actually do that
They say you don’t get dizzy or nauseous when on this thing but I’m getting dizzy and nauseous looking at this
Mariah was my team's mentor when I was at Space Camp for the week I was there, nice to see she's doing well. I was in the very same MAT, so it feels awesome knowing I was in a place Tom's ridden in.
@@MarkPentler Really? Just..... No.....

Ayyyyyy what year did you go to space camp
Amish Murthy I went in 2016
I am also happy to find out that I've sat where Tom's sat! Can't remember for the life of me who was running it at the time, though, as I participated in the Space Academy and Aviation Challenge back around 2002. I hope you (and any other fellow space campers here) enjoyed the experience as much as I did!
2:08 the astronaut's chair would have *OOOUUUHHHH* controls on it.. 😂 I feel you Tom
If this was installed in amusement parks, then everyone would have been astronauts in the future.
I've been on that thing! It's super fun and you don't get motion sickness bc your center of gravity stays the same! Space camp in general is an amazing experience, and I had so much fun there!
Oh hey, it's Moriah! I work at space camp. I'm part of the team that does the safety checks and routine maintenance on the MAT.
Crypt1cmyst1c r u sure
Awesome!
I’ve been in the exact thing! I went there last year on a field trip. Now my life is complete knowing that Tom went in the same machine as me.
I rode in that one as well (:
"Are you ready?" "No!" Tom, blink twice if you need help
The students at my highschool built one of these over 10 tears ago in welding class. Manually spun, worked amazing
As someone who’s learned about gimbal lock, it’s all I notice.
EllipticGeometry I never fully understood the problems I was having as a 3D modeller until I started studying space history and learned about gimbal lock and floating point variables.
I like your name and profile picture :)
hey eliptic, check out how they navigated the apollo command module, using frames of reference, stars and the gimbal, super clever, you would enjoy it.. it's why it was so important to get the numbers down in apollo 13 , as seen in the film.. also how guggenheim's money revolutionized instruments, Larry Sperry's story is incredible as well.
Nice Mandelbrot.
I remember doing this when I went to Space Camp as a kid. I didn't understand it, but I enjoyed it.
I don't remember going on that. Mind you it was '85(ish) and they were rebuilding everything at the time. Edit: I found the binder and it was the summer of 1986. Also go team Neptune!
I remember doing this 2 years ago
MarineRecPlayz it was fun?
@@iamthinking2252_ kinda it would have been more fun if my instructor actually knew how to work it. When got on it was very slow but some others went super fast
Yup. My camp didn't bother to tell us what it was for. It was just "astronaut training." We accepted it and it was a hell of a ride.

How did you spot that?

I wish most videos on KZhead were like this. His videos are clear and fun, and I learn something every time.
I did space camp at huntsville twice as a kid and the MAT was one of my favorite things there. Kinda bizarre seeing a Tom Scott video of it. It's still sitting in that same spot in the tent-like building next to the giant shuttle replica by the looks of it
It is, I went too!!
I don't know why I appreciate this so much right now, but thank you for not putting music over the person speaking.
Oh, goodness, you're bringing back old memories Tom! Shout out to all the Campers on here!
even if this was a good three or so years ago, the idea of tom visiting alabama at some point makes me very excited as an alabama citizen.
Wow, I like how you don’t get dizzy! Normally I get dizzy easily so I like the look of this.
Tom your mission, should you chose to accept it is.. Make 2019 the best year yet! 🍇

I did Space Camp there back in the late 90's I think. Was awesome. Still some of the best memories of my life.
Ive been there! Instantly brought bacl memories from my 7th grade summer experience when i got a scholarship to the robotics camp. Epic
I bet you love this job. You looked so happy in MAT! Happy New Year!
They used to have a similar thing to this at amusement parks and carnivals which was just the 3 rings but not powered. I had a lot of fun riding them when I was in my teens :)
untill someone's hand got jammed in em
You really get to play with all the fun toys, Tom. Happy New Year, cheers!
Thanks Tom for another great year
I love here in Huntsville AL, I o to the space and rocket center quite often. And the davidson center too. Highly recommend it to anyone any age!
What's your age ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Sorry to ask a random question on a year-old thread, but curiosity has gotten the better of me: Does Martin Martinez still do his spray painting booth outside there, by the rockets? Honestly, as much as I enjoyed everything else about my time there, the coolest part of my trip was watching him vibe out to his stereo while using actual trash to paint masterpieces in mere minutes.
Me: Realizing I have sat where Tom Scott has Also me: AAAAAAAAAAAAAA YESSSSSSSSSSSS
Woo! I went there 5 years ago on a week long school science trip and went on that exact MAT, it was an amazing experience.
Oh my gosh I did that at Space Camp. It was so much fun. They told us to keep our eyes open and if we didn’t we would pass out. I wish I could do it again.
Yes, one take. Oh wait, the outro
1:05 dead ass looks like James Charles in thirty years
Surprising to hear most people enjoy this test. I can always count on learning something from Tom's videos
Happy New Year, Tom Scott.
“Otherwise known as that spinny thing that astronauts get strapped into” Yes everyone calls t then including me
Very interesting as always Tom.
Oh my god, I did that at space camp ten years ago! I remember that was one of my favorite parts.
Happy New Year Tom and sidekicks!
"The astronaut chair would, AOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH"
Space Camp was truly one of the best experiences I’ve had. This particular simulator is cool, but it’s actually, for me, one of the least memorable parts, which speaks to the amazing programs at Space Camp.
Ah, this was a school trip for me in middle school. Definitely a highlight of my childhood, looking up at the night sky from the base of the decommissioned rockets and shuttles on the site and dreaming of the stars.
I spent 2 weeks there in 1999 as a school trip. Great experience!
Happy new year everyone! 🎆
I've also seen this used on a game show, where contestants had to answer questions while being spun.
I went to this exact place in 2017 when I was in 8th grade. Super fun and you don’t get dizzy after it!
I went to space camp when I was much younger and visited again recently. Amazing place, 10/10 recommend for any kid with an interest in space exploration and is a big part of the reason I'm studying aerospace engineering right now.
This is ground control to Major Tom; you've really made the grade. And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear.
Matt: Multi Axis Tom Trainer
I was in that exact thing. It was one of my favorite experiences, so much fun! Space camp was incredible
I got to use that! It's fantastic! Wish we got to use them for 5 minutes tho... Plenty and plenty of love for the Crew Trainers! You guys are the bomb. 😘
But why isn't it used anymore?
@@ragnkja Ah, ok. Thanks.
@@ragnkja I don't think that answers the question. How is it gaining control of the spacecraft in such a situation not as relevant anymore? Update: well I should pay a bit more attention to what the video says haha
Χρήστος Τζήκας the shuttle is a different shape, so won't spin the same. They use something else now
Gemini or similar small "canister" spacecraft have low mass and inertia. When something goes wrong it is very possible the spacecraft could rotate violently and the astronaut could get disoriented or become unconscious. The risk of the fast rotation is much less likely with large ships like space shuttle due to high inertia.
EasiPat - WTF. they don't use the space shuttle anymore. They use the Soyuz now which is a space capsule. I'm guessing the training now is all done in Russia and they probably have one of these there.
You forgot the “That is somthing you might not have known” at the outro
I went to Space Camp a couple years ago and rode that. It's so fun imo!
Thanks for stopping by my hometown of huntsville! Hope you come to the Space and Rocket Center again next year!
Is “Geminee” a suitable way to pronounce Gemini?
Try playing pin the tail on the donkey after a minute in one of these!
Your not dizzy so it wouldn't make a difference
I did this when I was a kid! Loads of fun, worth going to Alabama for.
Before the video I got an ad with an astronaut talking about preparing for space travel. How fitting
happy new year
The operator was really informative, so cool!
I experienced something similar... There was a setup similar to MAT at a local music festival. You paid one ticket and two guys spun you until you said you can't handle it anymore. Although it was a standing setup (so you had to engage all your muscles in order not to fall off or break your back in the middle), it was a lot of fun! I spent so much time spinning on that thing that a huge line formed and two guys kindly asked me to come tomorrow earlier in the evening to have free spins for as long as I like. 😁😁😁
How do they deal with gimbal lock ?? Next thing to invent: The quaternion astronaut training camp: gimbal lock free edition.
I’m from Huntsville!!!! I wish I would’ve known you came by!!!
That looks astonishingly fun
Yesss I’ve been on that exact M.A.T. when I was at Space Camp years ago. Good times. I wish my flight suit still fit me, that thing was awesome.
I remember going to space camp. When my parents signed me up at the discovery store, we where told I could ride this as much as I wanted while at camp. When we arrived at camp they told us it was only once. My parents argued with them and I was allowed to ride it everyday. I looked the team challenge the money at the end of it. Would definitely recommend for those nerds that do not find it hard to quickly make new friends. If forming relationships is a challenge for you, you may find yourself feeling lonely surrounded by people you don't know.
One of these videos, very soon, we'll get to watch Tom barf (unless it's happened already and missed it). I predict that'll be his highest viewed video! 😉 Love 'em. Keep them coming!
Thank you for answering a question I never asked myself.
Happy new year from Australia Tom
When I see this guy: BLIMEY
CRUMBS
OK but no one in the comments is asking the most important question: What the hell is Space Camp?
it's a sleepaway camp for a week, in which you and your team of 15 people do challenges against other teams and learn about space. super fun, I've been there.
disappointing, I think a spacecamp should at least be on the height of the Karnan line...
I remember riding this exact one when I went years and years ago. It was great
I went there last summer. I loved the 360 chair!
So todays episode was MAT and Tom? Is this the continuation of the park bench? And if so, what's it called? Barf bench?
Spinny Bench Thing (Although they might need to find a slightly bigger one for that)
*nuclear bomb happens* Tom: can we get that one more time please I forgot to do the outro
I went to space camp as a kid, it was great!
All your videos are so good
"what do you want?" "ever seen a brush dipped in red water color?" "say no more"
"I forgot to do the outro" I don't blame you, Tom!
I have just now leaned that Tom Scott has ridden in the same exact seat as I did about a month after I already had. That’s nice
I went on space camp a year ago. I came from Australia and the realism to see that tom Scott has been in the same chair as me is just cool.
Who else remembers this icarly episode
I wonder if Neil Armstrong ever used the MASTIF aka the gimball rig? It would have certainly helped him cope with the disorientation when OAMS thruster 8 stuck open and spun Gemini 8 at nearly 50 rpm.
I love your vids Tom!
Great video - thanks.
How many spins does it take to get THAT hairdo ??!?
