His tank was nearly empty, causing his car to be lighter, and caught a Little too much air lifting the car. Hope that helped.
Its surprising that even with that much d-force in a GTR it caused it to lift. The fluids cant add THAT much to the car.
@@rishinarang9966 low fuel plus a head wind. That section of the Nordschleife, Flugplatz, is infamous for sending cars flying without warning and for various reasons. Because this section is an upward slope, cars are more likely to catch air in this section. In real life, much like in the movie, this was considered a freak accident.
What's beautiful about this scene is that after earlier in the movie when the coach said he hates to fly, he instinctively got on the chopper to be with Jann.

In real life Jann did got out of the car unharmed, but was shaken up after the accident.
A spectator was also killed in this accident as the car did fly into the crowd. I guess they rewrote the scene to Jann getting injured instead of the story turning grim mentioning the crash killed a spectator.

What really makes this scene sink in on a deeply personal level is the parents watching him race. I'm not a parent, but just thinking about how my parents would feel in that instant if I were the one in that car is traumatizing. Just listening to the mom's heart just drop and the dad realizing it was his son's car after he had been disapproving of his son's choice before this. As a Dad, he must have felt horrible knowing that those could have been the last moments he had with his kid. Luckily he ended up being okay, but overall this scene in the movie was definitely a tear jerker

CONTEXT: This incident happened in Flugplatz, Nürburgring (Real life and the movie.) A Nissan GT-R Nismo driven by racer Jann Mardenborough took flight at a Nürburgring race. The car was likely low on fuel which made it lighter, as well as the wind conditions. When the car went up the road, the low fuel and wind conditions caused it to lift up towards the crowd. The car smashed into the line tire stacks next to the concrete walls and fence, which caused it to go flying into the crowd. In the movie, they showed Jann being injured and airlifted to help. In real life, the car flew into the crowd and killed one of the watching spectators. Jann knew this either because he had seen the dead spectator, or someone told him about it. Luckily Jann survived in real life, thanks to the roll cages in the car. If the roll cages hadn't been there then this accident could have been MUCH MUCH worse.
flooring up that incline will send any car flying, it was a driver error.
@@growingup4487untrue, it was ruled not his fault, its a freak accident they state it in the movie, the gust of wind with that level of speed and low fuel, could happen to anyone

Every gamer who achieved GOLD in GT Sport knows that this section can't be taken without lifting off the throttle for half a second. Nearly everyone has this photo of the rear bumper just inches from the asphalt. When it happened, we knew we were out of control. And nobody stuck the landing. I learned to love this course and we did it back then with comparable NASCAR.
I knew something was gonna happen the second I saw him full throttle it on that hill. I've driven Gr.3 cars on that track before and even then I would get slight airtime that would screw me over coming out of there.
Every game racer knows you dont power over inclines ever or you ease on brakes towards the peak to kill lift on the front.

Man watching this is crazy. I was involved in an accident on the highway that sent my vehicle end over end very similarly. (I was speeding but obviously no where near the velocity these cars are traveling at. I can say that this scene legit triggered me to exactly the moment when my car begin rolling end over end. I was traveling approximately 90+ MPH. I mean the POV shown here from the driver’s cabin is almost exactly what I experienced and SAW when I was in my rollover accident. My vehicle flipped 3 times and unlike the professionals I was not strapped in. The crash was over JUST as quick as it was here. It’s almost incomprehensible how much FORCE is in an Accident like that and also how quickly everything just goes still. I was launched into the backseat during the accident which doctors said probably saved my life as the front portion of my room was caved WELL down below the steering wheel. I’m really impressed with the realism from Cabin POV. Incredible
I had a similar experience going 70 around a wet bend as I was young and stupid wanting to be a “rally” driver. Ended up spinning out hitting the ditch causing me to roll a couple times and a tree stopped me from rolling more. Thankfully I was strapped in and suffered no injury but was left stranded with no phone as it had gotten lost temporarily in the wreck. Tried signaling people to stop and help me but nobody wanted to stop even after 5 people passed. This scene also sent me into a flashback on how fast it happened as well as how fast it stopped. Only thing is I wasn’t shaken up too bad and went straight back into driving tho I would be shaken if I had hurt somebody
That was Crazy You yall good from the accident Which is happening all the time?
im perfectly fine! as soon as the car stopped rolling i was stuck on my side so i had to get out via the windshield which gave me a small cut on the leg. no problems except for being sore all over from bracing just before flipping. just sad i lost my first car @@EqyanSaeed701
i remember watching this race and this accident live on tv, i was 14 when it happened, i was always moved by Jann and how he came up to be a racer. i will never forget this race.
And this is why you always lift off the accelerator entering Flugplatz... when air pressure is low underneath the car, it creates downforce. When that air pressure turns high, the car becomes an airplane wing. If there is anyone that knows that effect better, it's Mark Webber and Peter Dumbreck.
Other way round. The downforce is generated by the widening underbody sucking the car down. The problem is that effect which is similar to a venturi relies on the front cross section being small so once the car lifts off the downforce reduces as the difference in cross section from front to rear decreases. Once it is equal no downforce is produced and due to the flat underside of the car the oncoming air can lift it up like a sail in the wind. This is compounded by the rear wing still pushing the car down so not even the heavy engine can keep it on the ground. Same thing that happened at Le Mans with the Mercs, going full speed over a bump, car lifts, downforce reduced and that was enough to flip em. You want only as much downforce as you need as it does create drag, so this type of accident can happen with practically any race car that relies on underbody downforce. At the best of times bumps that reduce the effectiveness of that just create understeer, at worst you end up backflipping. It's a bit weird that section of track hasn't been altered yet or some taller catchfences installed at the very least.
Im sure this dude knows very well since it happened to him irl too
It shows very well how terrifying the Nurburgring is

The movie was good in my opinion but the game could use better sounds for the cars.
This is what James May was always on about
R.I.P. to the spectator that died in this crash
They don't call Nürbürgring "The Green Hell" for no reason. Even legendary racers alike have been injured or even killed while trying to push the limits at this famed race course.
Man the music hits hard at 1:50. Slowly building up as he passes more cars, building to a crescendo as he's chasing down first Just not the climatic end you were expecting
I wasn’t familiar with Janns story before the movie (I’m aware they took some liberties while writing it) and during this scene I was glued to the screen, I was positive he was gonna pass him and finish first. I remember gasping when I saw the hood lift and the front wheels come off the ground, reminded me of Mark Webbers Le Mans crash
as someone who didn’t know the story behind the movie at all, this scene literally had me stunned. the way it was shot is exactly like the real occurrence. and they don’t build up to the crash at all, but it’s very subtle with the music until the moment comes. 10/10 movie for me. me and my dad loved it since we played split screen all the time on the ps2
this happens most of the time, even in the game itself
this is true painfully true
You never flip cars on GT games this is a crock, yes real world he did this a few years back but it wasn't during the academy, but his real racing carrier. also killed a spectator there.
@Thunderer0872 have you played any GT game pass GT4? Cars do flip now.
@@MiguelRodriguez-lp9etI’ve been playing GT7 since it dropped and never seen a car flip. This gotta be cap
I've never played any racing game on this track that ever results in what happened in the movie. Even if you take that flat out, regardless of vehicle, you never lift off like that. Seems almost unrealistic.
I love this track. Fun and challenging in any game that has it, but that one area is wickedly dangerous, especially in the more realistic sims. Taking that area in one piece is a challenge no matter if it's IRL or in a game.
Flugplatz (the section where Jann flips) is so fatal and dangerous that its name literally means "airport" in English
That's not why it's called that, there used to be a small airfield close that part of the track, the airfield is long since gone, but the danger of this section is just a coincidence
@DeathOfAMartyr3 it's still a death Vally for cars that have a bigger wings on thier Tail like the CLK GTR and the Nissan GTR GT3

Something that is a very cool sight for me is how good the scene is. You can see the cars wing scratching the track before crashing. Sad scene in real life but in the movie then it is a amazing scene that they made.
As someone who grew up with Gran Turismo, I love this movie. When I saw this scene the day I saw it at the theater, I literally almost jumped out of my seat.
The moment I saw this scene, I knew it was gonna happen in an instant. Even though the last GT I played was GT3 A-Spec, I have experiemced my mishaps in the Nordschleife on NFS Shift. Driving at that specific part too fast is always a recipe for disaster.
Not to mention the physics of NFS Shift duology, where the car likes to bounce on this track most of the time, and if that happens, release the throttle to gain control.
You have total confidence in the car and then it all makes no sense as you fly through the air like that. Who knows what goes through the mind in those seconds.
To be honest its miraculous that he survived, i thought the car would have caught fire or explode

I have this on Blu-Ray. They used real GT3 and LMP2 cars for the movie. They are also going race pace. So when you see 270km/h on the dash, they were actually going that fast.
For far aerial shots, I suspect they used CGI because their cornering speeds looked too fast to be true, but yes, the shots alongside the cars featured the real cars themselves.
@yongling9825 The used drones for the aerial shots. Also CGI would be applied in the editing process. Not saying they didn't use CGI, but during filming all the cars were pushed to the limit. It looks fast because of cleaver camera angles and because the cars actually are going that fast.
