It turns so quickly into "moderation" back into the full blown state. I'm not saying you won't EVER be able to enjoy a drink again in your life but it really just isn't worth it. The "moderation" turns so fast its kinda scary. The fact that Charlie admitted that he broke his sobriety streak and was this open and honest with his viewers about something so serious is incredible honestly. Most people don't have the courage to do this in front of a few people, let alone millions. That's crazy, honestly. Everyone relapses at some point. Some relapses are more severe than others, but the relapse itself isn't what matters, it's how you handle it and keep yourself back on track after that relapse that's important. I hope he's doing alright.

I am a firm believer that my addiction is still there waiting for me to slip up and while my body hasn’t been exposed to opioids in 15 years my tolerance can easily get back to where it was before and then some. I’ve seen it happen to people who have relapsed. I remember thinking that I’d never have fun again once I get sober. I have found that my life is a lot more fun and I have a supportive friend group who encourage my sobriety. It’s definitely not a boring life. I’m also not bothered by people drinking around me but I’m not going to spend my time in a bar unless there’s a reason for me to be there. Like a birthday party or to see a band play.

    • Eh, I wouldn't put in on that high a pedestal. Actually, I have much more respect for you. Getting through an actual addiction both physically and mentally is waaay more challenging then just giving up a bit of party drinking. Getting addicted itself is often times a genetic thing. Lots of people are susceptible to addiction, couple that with social problems it's really fucking hard to quit that then. So respect to you man. I have respect for charlie in the sense that he's making this public. If you're not addicted to alcohol, why the heck would you deserve respect for not drinking any? It's a rather simple, rational choice. You either choose to live with the crappy, unhealthy bullshit that comes along with the 1-2 hours of fun and relief or you don't and save yourself money and loads of suffering. Remember you always have a choice.

  • I work in the field of addiction, and I think this is a great video. Glad you uploaded it. Recovery looks different for different people, so I never fault anyone for thinking they can handle things down the line. Some can. Most can't. It's okay to make mistakes in finding your own limits, so long as you learn from it and update your boundaries. I know you didn't ask, but if you end up having this problem again, I do have a suggestion. Maybe have harder number/time/occasion limits on the "couple of drinks" rule? I find clearer boundaries help avoid slippery slope mishaps. Leaving wiggle room for this kind of stuff can accidentally complicate things. Your honesty is awesome, and this video is a great way to keep yourself in line in the future (while potentially helping others). I'm rooting for ya!

    • First of all, congrats to 14 years without drinking. But how the hell do you consider yourself "recovering" and an "alcoholic" if you've managed to not drink for 14 years? You're done man. You're not an alcoholic. You're just a person that doesn't drink. I mean this in the best way possible. (Sorry if there are any errors. English is not my first language.)

    • @bekampfemittelmaigkeit4569 I love this sentiment I think the recovering title is because with addiction, once you're addicted you never quite heal fully a lot of the time, you always have an urge to go back when things get hard, it's like a safety blanket that you turn to all the time. Unfortunately with addiction, the recovery period is the final stage, no one ever truly gets over it But I agree, 14 years is so impressive and I one day hope that I will be able to say the same, amazing work OP!

    • An alcoholic is someone that is unable to stop drinking, even though he wants to. Someone that does not drink, is not an alcoholic. Identification with the Problem is what makes it hard for the affected person, not do drink. If you look at the reasons that enable you to not identify with being hooked to alcohol, then not drinking stops requiring effort. Not drinking for 14 years makes you a non-drinker. It's reason enough to not identify with being an alcoholic. Stop believing you're an alcoholic and not-drinking stops requiring effort. If it still requires effort for you to not drink, then go read Allen Carr's Book "The easy way to control alcohol" I have stopped drinking last year and since then i can't count a single time where I seriously felt bad about not drinking or had to put effort into not drinking alcohol. This is the final stage. Not recovery. Not feeling like an alcoholic. It's just not being a drinker.

  • This is the video I'm going to share with my daughter to begin the dialog of the dangers of binge drinking. Being raised by alcoholics myself, I was stunned by the possibility that I had become an alcoholic in my twenties. I didn't consider my drinking problematic as I could abstain from alcohol for very long strenches, unlike my parents. It wasn't until I attended an AA meeting with a family member that I realized and accepted that I too was an addict and that anxiety/stress triggered my binge drinking. If I start, I can't stop and like you, the hangovers were unbearable. Unlike you, I did hurt myself the last time I binged and woken up in a hospital handcuffed to the bed with police officers babysitting me. I had been injured, can't remember how and had refused help which is why I had bracelets on. I disfigured my face and never drank again to this day. Thankfully, I didn't drive nor hurt anyone other than myself. Blacking out is very dangerous and I'm grateful for the officers who rescued me from myself. Apparently I was found bleeding on a sidewalk in some sketchy neighborhood next to a dumpster. That was 14 years ago. Unfortunately my parents never got sober, lost everything and now are paying with toll with permanent brain damage in the form of Alzehemier's Disease. Some people can drink, have fun, not get drunk and don't experience blackouts. I'm just not one of those people... sounds like you're not either. Thanks for sharing your story with such honesty and not editing out the "embarrassing" parts. Please take care of yourself. Much Respect from 🇨🇦

    • Make sure to set reasonable goals. If you try for cold turkey and fail, which is highly likely, you'll simply feel more defeated and thus more prone to giving up altogether. For instance, if you usually drink while out and not at home, maybe try using *only* cash to pay for your drinks starting with $50 the first week/month/whatever time span, then $45, then $40, etc. Keep only that amount in your wallet so you don't succumb to temptation to buy more. Hopefully, by the time you get down to $5, you'll just order a milkshake or something else instead! Godspeed! 👍

    • Just as a PSA for yourself and anyone else reading , if your problem with drinking its relatively severe DO NOT QUIT COLD TURKEY. Alcohol is one of the few substances that if you’ve become physically dependent on it quitting cold turkey can lead to seizures and death. If you suffer from withdrawal symptoms when you try and cut back/quit then please consult a professional or at the very least do some proper research into how you can quit safely. I have a mother who’s currently in rehab and in the months/year leading up to it she was constantly told by doctors to be extremely careful about cutting out too much too quickly. Gradually tapering off your usage in a controlled manner is the safest and most effective method if you are going to do it by yourself. Good luck to anyone who is trying to quit, I know you can do this. It’s immensely difficult but at the end you’ll never for a single second regret doing it. Life gets a lot better when your addiction is no longer in control.

    • To help get used to change, try with something that doesn't affect you much. If you usually get up at 7am, change it to 645am. We do best when we ease into it. Be gentle with yourself. This is for the rest of your life, it is important to let each small step be fully incorporated, then try the next. When we change too quickly, it makes a weaker foundation to step off of and, too often, it all falls down. Take care.

      @TheQueenRulesAll@TheQueenRulesAll7 ай бұрын
    • Don't go cold turkey if your drinking is pretty severe. That will probably hurt more than even your worst hangover. If you want to try quitting on your own as opposed to seeking help from professionals, I would suggest weaning yourself off little by little until your body becomes less dependent on the alcohol over time as opposed to just completely quitting all together. That could be dangerous.
