  • Trump sees NATO as a cost like in a business. Not an investment. NATO has kept peace in Europe since WW2 and allowed the USA to trade and make money. Its leadership also kept powers like Germany in check. NATO served the US very well.

Robert F Kennedy also coincidentally had a campaign poster that had a Russian coffee shop in the background. Add to all this circumstantial stuff, there was speculation of Russian interference in elections leading to people wanting to impeach trump. Adult women have the courts to turn to, and young female athletes have no protection. NATO members are not automatically required to provide military assistance if another member is attacked, just assistance “as deemed necessary,” which could mean something as mundane as sending medical supplies, for example. You can bet Putin knows this, and there is no way Trump would commit American troops to protect Europe if he had a way out. If Trump is elected you can forget about more funding for Ukraine, US military assistance to protect NATO members, or the US nuclear umbrella.

  • The headline is misleading. Ambassador Bolton did NOT say that. He simply said that in his view, President Trump does not see any advantage to the United States in being in NATO, and sees it as a one-sided "deal" as the United States does not "need" NATO if it chooses to defend Europe. Ambassador Bolton's opinion is much more nuanced than the headline suggests.

    • Make no mistake, Trump will kowtow to Putin and try to pull the US out of NATO. It's not about getting NATO countries to contribute more to their own defense. The truth to that lie was the executive orders Trump had drawn up in his lame duck period to pull US troops out of Europe.
