In this Channel 17 report, eighteen months after families were forced to leave their homes in the Love Canal district of Niagara Falls, reporter Fran Lucca examines another tragic dilemma facing hundreds more Love Canal residents who weren't fortunate enough to escape in 1978.
Residents began complaining of contamination and odor problems in 1976. More than 200 families closest to the canal were evacuated and never returned. In January of 1980, nearby residents fed up as their families continued to struggle with illness, suffer miscarriages, and have children with birth defects.
For families who leave their homes permanently and settle with the state, the state intends to re-sell those homes back to new families.
