Joint CDC and FDA Statement on Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, together with low platelets
Some sort of immune response
6 cases from 6.8 million doses
Look out for, severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath within three weeks of vaccination
Paul A.Offit, vaccine specialist, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
I think it’s the prudent thing to do
I think it’s real - this is a rare, but real association
Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), meets today
EMA also investigating, delaying European rollout
Janet Woodcock, acting commissioner, Food and Drug Administration
One reason for the pause, health professionals must know not to use heparin
All six cases in the US, occurred among women, 18 to 48
6 - 13 days after vaccination
Of the 6, 1 death and 1 critical
Of the 6, 2 discharged
The person in critical condition was (reportedly) treated with heparin
Peter Marks, director of the FDA's centre for biologics evaluation and research
hesitate to call it a class effect related to adenovirus vector vaccines
It's plainly obvious to us already that what we're seeing with the Jansen vaccines looks very similar to what is being seen with the AstraZeneca vaccine
AstraZeneca, chimpanzee adenoviral vector
Janssen, human adenoviral vector vaccine
I can't make some broad statement yet, but obviously they are from the same general class of viral vectors
Scale of the problem
100 million doses to US end of May
can produce 1 billion doses globally by the end of the year
has agreed to sell 500 million doses to developing nations via Covax purchasing agreement
agreed to sell up to 400 million to African countries
Turkey
www.telegraph.co.uk/global-he...
Cases, + 59,187 = 3,962,000 million
Deaths, + 273 = 34,455
President Tayyip Erdogan, partial closures
Ramadan started yesterday
France
Cases, + 39,113 = 5,100,000
Deaths, + 324 (in hospital) = 99,480
ITU = 5,952
One month lockdown in place since the end of March
France will suspend all flights to and from Brazil
Sweden
AZ, being given to over 65s
J&J arriving this week
Russia
Manufacturing of Sputnik V, soon in India, (50 m per month) Serbia, Iran, Italy
India
India approved Sputnik V on Monday
UK

Surge PCR testing south London
Lambeth and Wandsworth (population 656,000)

Still protects against severe disease
Does not seem to out compete UK variant

Also funny how you don't compare death tolls to population sizes (per capita). The positivity rate in France has been between 6-9% for the entirety of 2021... Every medical intervention from open heart surgery to taking an aspirin carries a degree of risk. I have had general anaesthesia for surgery twice plus a range of different vaccines but have always accepted the possible consequences. Western society has become completely risk averse and is unable to face up to the fact nothing is 100% safe. • Some updates regarding Sweden here: - This week we have highest number of patients in intensive care for COVID-19 during the entire pandemic - The health authorities in the Uppsala region (which have been hit particularly hard) pleaded for all citizens to go in to a "personal lockdown" and not meet anyone outside their household - My personal observation is that people do not seem to care about the recommendations from the authorities at all. I see more people wearing masks (but still maybe only like 10-15%), but that's it - Our Public Health Authority just announced that they are suspending the Johnson&Johnson vaccine pending CDC/EMAs investigation - Vaccine programs are still rolling on tough, my parents got their first vaccine shot this week (AstraZenica) - Region Stockholm (where I live) have announced that they will start phase 4 (everyone over age of 18) in week 19, if they get all planned vaccine deliveries. So I am starting to feel hope that I can get my shot soon

We had been deliberately “opening safely” just as exponential growth in VOCs was building under the data. They completely ignored Simon Fraser University modeling from February 9 and instead pursued a policy of, “this is over, back to normal, it’ll be fine.” Our recent policy response could not have been more half-assed.

    • If you are under the illusion that lockdowns & vaccinations are going to end this pandemic - Good for you but i am not sure how that is possible. All vaccines we currently have are non-sterilizing and are targeted to induce antibodies to S-protein of the original strain. So any minor change in the S-protein of the variants could cause an immune escape and make the vaccinated very susceptible to serious illness. With the vaccination campaign we may see a bit of a drop as it protects against the original stain which is also still in circulation, but the variants are taking hold and becoming the dominant strain and it will not be long before the cases spike up once again and that will be with more sick people. We cannot hide from this virus for ever ? that is not practical and neither can be done. It is about time we all started thinking properly taking into account the several dynamics which are at play here.

I recall from a prior video that Canadians make up a somewhat disproportional amount of your audience, given the population size. In any event, we are having sort of a weird moment in this pandemic, where our case numbers are really through the roof and are higher, per capita than in the US, for example. I notice that you have done other episodes where you really analysed what's going on in a given country, and we would really appreciate it if you could do that for Canada now. • @Peter Mortensen When US banned entry of people from China back in February 2020. It was "proactive" instead of "reactive". As a result, very few covid cases in the US is tracked back to China. However, this move is criticized by many, including infectious disease experts and then US president's political rivals.

  • Rare, perhaps, but my 41 year old daughter is the world to me and I am so glad she will be receiving her 1st Pfizer dose this week. A brief pause to better understand the risks and to better educate healthcare providers seems warranted.

Good luck 👍 either way.. I’m not having one because it doesn’t stop anything nor stop you spreading it.. It seems the governments are manipulating people into having it? Not sure. Take care Jane z

  • Dear Dr John Greatly appreciate this update. Thank you very much. To ease your obvious discomfort would suggest you prepare a drink consisting of 350 g fresh ginger, juice of two lemons, 1 dL honey. Chop and mince ginger finely and cook in 1 liter water for 20 minutes. Sieve at least twice, add lemon and honey. This is an excellent anti-oxidant drink Do hope this will help you. Best wishes, take care Audrey
