Shawn, did you ever speak to the former owners of U-534? We're building a new U-534 museum and in our sister museum (Western Approaches) we've got a memorial for Canadian forces who served in the Battle Of The Atlantic. Telling Roderick's story would be great since it really shows the cost on both sides.

@@howtofixauboat I have never spoke with the former owners and I wish my grandfather was still around to hear about new discoveries. The George Cross is currently located in the Ottawa War Museum. We have some documentation and a few books about the story, Borden’s story will be included in a new book currently being written by a lady in England. Our hometown airport has been named after him as well as the 155 Borden Gray Air Cadets Squadron.

Instead of preserving the boat in one piece they went and cut it up into 4 sections in Liverpool. It should never have gone to Liverpool in that case. It was left to rust in Birkenhead Maritime museum. They never had any intentions of preserving it. It should've remained in Denmark.

One of the best, if not the best U-boat restorations and historical displays is the U505 at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Il. I grew up south of Chicago and have been to the museum dozens of times thru the years and seen it when it was an outside display next to Lake Michigan. Now its all restored and inside a climate controlled building and it is absolutely amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing it again, and again... it will be around a lot longer than I will.

I can remember visiting Wallasey docks, seeing this very impressive U- Boat towering almost into the main road, as it was so long, and took up so much room. A few years later, as to allow disabled access, when it became a museum exhibit, they cut it into separate pieces. They should have left it on the seabed.
@peterlewis35403 жыл бұрын
That is correct, i went on the tour of the boat years ago, i think all the exhibits at the museum were scrapped, including hms bronnington the mine sweeper commanded by prince charles in his navy days. The idea was that it could be welded back together in sections much like the way modern ships are made nowadays, just which someone would transport it back to the u boat pens and do just that.
@stottybox31853 жыл бұрын
By sdectioning it, it allowed access to the submarine and its internal workings. i don't like that it was cut up like that, but it does give you a far better view of the inner workings of a U-boat from WWII
@JoeFlation3 жыл бұрын
Don't listen to this guy. Yes, it was cut into 3 pieces, but not bc of disabled avcess, when the museum that had housed the boat went bankrupt, the boat was going to be scrapped all together, but another museum managed to pull enough money to house it, but they didn't have the kind of money and resources to ship the whole thing to its new location in 1 piece, so they cut it up for ease of moving. It's still sad it was cut up, but there's no need to go and make up reasons

I can remember seeing the complete hull of U534 on the dockside in Birkenhead, with the depth charge damage on the rear. So that the disabled could have access inside the hull, they cut it into three separate pieces. I have nothing but admiration for people who are disabled, but destroying an almost unique war artifact was very unfortunate.

The museum costs more than you used to pay to get a complete guided tour around an intact u-boat! You can thank Merseytravel, they chopped up one of only 4 surviving u-boats in the interest of saving a few pound. It should have been sold to a corporation or museum that had some experience in preserving and maintaining a rare artifact like this... not chop it up due to lack of on-site space then extort the public to see it.

I saw the U534 when she was still in 1 peice at the Historic Ship Museum at Birkenhead - sadly didn't get a chance to go on board :(
U-534 shot down the Wellington bomber my great uncle was aboard August 27, 1944. Roderick Borden Gray was posthumously awarded the George Cross after saving the lives of his fellow airmen.
Well, that RAISES some old memories
Was your uncle the pilot
@@davidm3maniac201 he was the navigator. Although badly wounded, he was the only one to get out with a life raft. After recovering a few buddies, he refused to get in himself and succumbed to his wounds overnight. Thankfully the surviving crew members were rescued the next day.
This entire video was incredible. From the interesting topic to the commercials. I felt like I was a kid playing on the floor while my Grandpa watched TV. Oh if only I could go back and enjoy the moment and time with my grandparents.
This comment is truly sad.
@@KermitFrazierdotcomall I meant is that I loved my grandparents and they’re missed. I feel lucky I got to have them for the first half of my life. Great memories.
I wonder what it would take to make it sea worthy again.
Such an awesome experience. I cannot echo this statement enough. Always what comes to mind whenever I hear about u-boats. You can stand in and walk through a real one!
@@ericb4127 I've been there, they have sections cut out to get a better view. Its probably not ever gonna be sea worthy as you'd have to reforce alot of the structural supports. It'd be cheaper and easier to commission a new one.
@@ericb4127 not alot it wasnt damaged it was captured
A Captain of the U-505 shot himself dead on the boat during a Depth Charge attack, some time before the time it was captured.
I was expecting a documentary about raising the Uboat but I was not expecting the people from the sub and the Americans who sunk it to be alive then brought together. What a mixed bag of emotions that must have been for them knowing the old men standing across from them were the people they were fighting. Fantastic documentary, I know a lot of people don’t agree with raising this boat but the documentary itself is amazing!
U-534 was sunk by an RAF Coastal Command Aircrew. No Americans involved.
Very brave men the u boat and were treated and paid very well.
When asked, after visiting the graves in Normandy, if the war was worth it all, the surviving crew member of the Liberator replied “Absolutely.” This point should be understood by all of the peaceniks that believe nothing is worth war, uttered by a veteran forced to fight but proud to have done so. Tyranny must not be allowed to survive no matter the cost.
Very moving documentary. The narrator was 1st rate.
My grandfather served in the 🇺🇸 Army-Airforce during the War, had many stories that were good and bad but I was always PROUD that he was able to share them because he survived. We all need to be thankful for what THOSE MEN went through and the dedication they gave us to be a free country.....
No he didn’t you just want KZhead valor points, well we’re all out. Sorry…

What an awesome piece of history saved. Great job you guys!! I really enjoyed watching the vets.
I'm here 5 years later and it is still as good as the first time I watched it
Sitting in bed watching this....On my bedside table is an empty wine bottle that was onboard the U534 for it's final voyage. Feels so strange seeing the boat in action with the real artifact right here :)
I live where it is now stored and its such a shame that they have cut it into sections , painted it grey so now it's a pointless attraction for years it was left as found and looked amazing like a real life ghost ship/ sub that you could actually go in. Now it's lost all its history
I would have luv'd to been on that u boat when they brought it up and to pick through all the goodies. My hats off to the salvage crew and a very good video to watch
I can remember visiting Wallasey docks, seeing this very impressive U- Boat towering almost into the main road, as it was so long, and took up so much room. A few years later, as to allow disabled access, when it became a museum exhibit, they cut it into separate pieces. They should have left it on the seabed.
By sdectioning it, it allowed access to the submarine and its internal workings. i don't like that it was cut up like that, but it does give you a far better view of the inner workings of a U-boat from WWII
Is it still there? Got a mate in Wallasey
For me personally, the U-boats are something of a passion. I love history and my family is a reason why I got started in it. My great uncle captained the U-boat 196. He was involved in many Convoy battles. For three and a half years he commended this U-boat. And he was stationed aboard the u-534, so it holds great personal significance to me
Wow what was he like in life??
Im the owner of a lot of the items recovered from U534 , Ive been buying a fair few thing's in this video ! Im looking at them now ! there in cases in my living room ! been collecting U-boat parts since I was 21 , so strange to see this and then look away from lap-top and there they are in my home ! there all sat next to my most valuable part of my collection ..U47 engine room brass work lamp ! it was damaged after she sank the royal oak and taken ashore to repair , it never got picked up as she had another lamp in the store's , the one I own sat in a box in an engineer's celler untill 2012 when I became the owner ...great video !
Your the man , man
So, instead of being a hoarder of so much history, why not allow a museum to display it so EVERYBODY can learn from it? People like you are disgusting!
That’s really cool and terrifying. If only the items could talk think of the stories. I hope the person you will them to appreciate what you gave them. It would be my prized possessions.
Fantastic documentary thank you for sharing..
SMIT is an amazing company. They could raise a sunken aircraft carrier if they were asked.
Can you imagine? As a young man you escape from a sinking U-Boat-- most of your belongings forever lost. Here is one place you'll never stand again. Yet decades later there you are-- a place no one should ever have visited again and you find yourself in front of your bunk, going through things that used to be yours. A strange world.
Hal That was an amazing moment.
@AquaticBoardwalkEngineer ur one wery worthless bullshit and pies also
Thank you for posting this wonderful detail of WW 2, a war begun with aggression against humanity and terminated by a desire for peace on earth.
Why they had to bastardise U534 by chopping her into three for the U-boat story I'll never know and surely it would have made more sense to restore her so that she could be moored in the same way as the other submarine that was there before.
agree
3:18 notice the Olympic symbol on the U-boat. The captain was a member of Crew 36, meaning he graduated from U-boat commander school in 1936, the year of the Olympic Games in Berlin.
I totally agree, it should never have been cut up, despite current pc attitudes, another piece of history destroyed.
They still can't because it ends are covered in plexiglas. Installing video cameras throughout the hull would have been far better than butchering the piece of history like they did.
Advanced german subs used to be made of several parts in different locations, later assembled together in the final place.
Because of the advancing war front they were forced to. Still, there is no excuse for cutting this one up like they did. If they weren't going to cosmetically restore it none of what they did makes sense.
It wasn't cut up for that reason; just why it's still in pieces. They cut her up to save money on transport when they moved her to Merseyside.
They knocked ‘the most advanced weapon of WWII’ against the side of the UBoat at 39 minutes in, lol. GREAT documentary though. Thanks for the upload!
Very bravest of young men and boys on both sides ❤
My Father was a Dutch engineer in Bergen forced by the German Nazis in 44’45. He told that he sabotaged the Diesel Engines. They ran for about two weeks and than the pistonrings cracked and the engine failed. If that is true we don’t know. What we know is that he fell in love with a young Norwegian girl and he took her back to Holland in june 1945! And I am a son born out of them. I am 57 now and it is time to know the truth about it. How the hell did my dad travelled to Bergen Norway….
Very interesting presentation. Thanks for posting.

it's eerie to see something that was meant to sit at the bottom of the sea for eternity seemingly some back from the dead just the same as seeing footage of when they found the wreck of Bismarck
Isn't it wonderful how well folks get along unless governments and their wars are put into the equation? Superb discovery persistence and recovery expertise, but certainly a memory-stirring event for all survivors, from both countries. Have we learned anything since then?
Many thanks for sharing!
I read that 5 crew members went to the bottom with it, but escaped through the torpedo hatches, they had to swim 57 metres (220ft) to the surface! I can't imagine how horrifying that must've been.
Oliver Wreckords I don't think they made it, they either ran out of breath or their lungs might have burst from the pressure if they went use to being down that deep.
@@taylortripp8598 All five crewmen did make it to the surface, but one of them panicked and forgot to exhale at the right time, so his lungs collapsed and he died anyway. The other four survived.
@@vulpesinculta3238 How does that work ? You have to exhale a bit every 10 meters or just exhale all together before surfacing ?
FreakeyStyley Gradually exhale during ascent... never fully. One is trained to do this. Must’ve been a very painful death.
U534 had a crew of 52, 49 survived to be rescued, but three died. Five of U534's crew were trapped in the torpedo room as the boat sank, but they managed to escape through the torpedo loading hatch. a 17 year old radio operator died as he failed to exhale when surfacing. And another two of the five trapped died from exposure in the water.

Yeah BABY
It was good to see both teams move past old views that they both held decades ago to give final respects to all hands lost that day. They'll never know why the boat fired on the liberators. It's irrelevant now anyway. I believe that the Captain of the boat took his life after the capitulation realizing the mistake he made and the lives that it cost needlessly for both sides. He made amends in his own sad and fatal way.
This is a rumour that has turned out not to be true. My dad met the Captain years later.
They must put it in warmuseum in Overloon (Holland) for a good preservation.

She now lies 270 feet (82 m) beneath the surface of the Atlantic, 150 nautical miles (280 km; 170 mi) off the coast of New England and south of Nova Scotia, just across international waters into Canadian territory. 4 of her 5 vertical tubes are still sealed, her hatches are still sealed, and she is (presumably) still airtight with the remains of 49 German sailors entombed within.[6]

Strange it was found to have those electric pop records on board, I did not know these were available in 1945.
Agreed. Jean-Michel Jarre (CD cover shown in Electrop ad) wasn't even born until 1948!
I think recovery is the wrong word. Raised, left as a tourist attraction (not a war monument) and then destroyed by idiots would fit better!
Access equates to Greed in this case. No intention to visit it cut up.
Completely ruined it !! Imagine cutting it up fuck me !
Victors would fit better! The idiots lost.
Wouldn't it be more like a war grave if the crew died in it. Then it should of been left alone.
It's not a sub anymore, it's chopped into 5 pieces and they've had some glazing and little porches/awnings.
I wonder how much money and time it would take to make it seaworthy again.
Cool!!!
