A trip from the east coast to Munich Germany. My grand mother and older sister figured out they were on the wrong flight. They quickly be planed got down the stairs, the stairs were pulling away as the first engine was starting. My grand mother was freaking out. I finally got loose of my seat belt and was crying that I need to get off the plane. They turned off the engine and brought back the stairs. We got on a different plane. My grand mother couldn’t speak English much.. It was me and sisters job to interpret for granny and get us to Germany. I remember we went on a drive to see bombed out small cities and part of a port with sunk ships, still waiting there turn to be fixed back after the war. My cousins were so much smarter then others. So much better technology and machinery and machining . Just thought you might be interested in some talking points of our past. Maybe you have a story of interest.🤔

    • @Terry Melvin Yes or a Roku or 1 of the gamer consoles, but I can't recall which now. I do know Roku actually has YT as 1 of their channel options, but you can also "cast" from your computer, tablet or phone onto your TV through the device. That's really not too hard either (says the tech dinosaur here). That funny rectangle up at the top right with the curved "rockers" on its lower left corner is what you tap to do so. Just connect them 1st via Bluetooth.

    • Why are compressed gas cylinders made the way they are ... as long tubes with hemispheric ends? Because that's the best design for most-even gas pressure distribution within the tank. With high-altitude flying (requiring cabin pressurization) starting to become the norm around the time the Connie was put in service, that's why she was the first, last, and only airliner with such a stylish, sexy figure. Ever after, airliners became tubes with wings. Related topic: Why did the de Havilland Comet crash in1952? It was metal fatigue, exacerbated by the squarish window design. Engineers redesigned the windows with rounded corners. Same basic problem: internal air pressure distribution.

I used be in Air Naitional Guard at the Channel Island Air Natioinal Guard base, and few times I would stop by and look around. Then one day I stopped by and it been pulled onto the ramp. I went up the stairs, and the first person I met was Gerry Steele, our flight engineer. When I asked him if there was any need for "unqualified labor, he said ' "Hell yes, come on up here and we'll put you to work". It statrted out as a "i'll come out here and give a few whadks at it." That quickly escalated to every weekend. It two years of steady work (and that was with an all volunteer work force) for two years before we became airworthy- and the rest is history. We started out as a freighter delivered to the Aire Force as C-121C. Serial number 54-156. We on the civil registry as N73544.

    • @@mjw1955 firstly, thanks for your service in the guard. Camarillo Connie, I love the name, was there for years and years and suddenly vanished. Very happy to know the story and that she got a new lease on life. The Connie is a bit personal for me. My grandfather was an engineer for 40ish years with Lockheeds skunk works division. Apparently he never ever would speak about work in any capacity but by the time I came around he'd loosened up a bit in his retirement. He loved to talk about "his baby", the tail on the Connie. Not many liked it during design or delivery but he said Kelley did and that's all that mattered. Never knew who the heck Kelley was till I watched a discovery Channel special 30 years later. (That was a light bulb moment. Lol) He would get very animated, unusual for him, talking about that plane. I knew he did the stabilizer tail on the Blackbird so that's what I always quizzed him on. Oddly enough he was as blasé about the blackbird as he was excited about the Connie. Lol. The Connie held many records in its day and he could and would quote em all. The other thing that stands out from those talks is how nuts he and all his co-workers were. From Pranks that took weeks too plan to a half dozen guys sitting on top of a car, drinking beer doing thirty mile an hour circles on a dry lake bed. Brick on the gas pedal and steering wheel tied off. HAHA. Anywho I'm sorry to digress so much. I just find it interesting how we each have our completely paths that all lead us into the love of the same thing. Thanks again Michael for sharing and shedding light on the Camarillo Connie mystery.

It was like flying over a well crafted patchwork quilt, but you could generally still see the cars and trains moving about too, something almost never seen from the jets.

    @sandraleesmith6938@sandraleesmith69384 жыл бұрын
    • @@KevinJDildonik I remember it well! Connie's were actually a much smoother ride than comparable sized jets, in fact, due to the triple stabilizers on their tails; a 747 (any model) is so ridiculously much larger that comparison is a joke. The worst for noise, however, at present, remains hands down the British made Viscount turboprop. What can toss a smaller plane easily will barely move any of the jumbos. If all you remember is the noise, how sad for you. I "grew up" w/ the Connie's, & then into the jets in my teens & beyond; my memories are of the grace, & beautiful views, more than the noise, although it's far from forgotten. I fear you may be too young to appreciate, those lovely old girls. I've also ridden in a number of the Connies' technological peers ( Douglas before the merger, Martins before that merger, & Convairs), the only "fair" comparisons; I'll take the Connies every time.

It's as if I was there and you can sense the size / proportions better. Born in 84, I missed these days of air travel, but it truly fascinates me... seeing something like this is the next best thing. FWIW the engines seem to be maintained VERY VERY well, their sync and startups is almost identical and they clear up really nicely, idle prop sync with the video framerate is almost perfect, which is difficult even on modern turboprops with electronic sync.

  • So beautiful to watch, a real flying beauty ......I'm 59 now and i remember my father at the airport being a passenger of all these classic airliners, never saw a Super Connie but a lot of DC-4 DC-6 DC-7 DC-3 707s Convairs , airport security was very loose in those days, i remember being just a passenger kid son and being invited into a DC-7 Cockpit just to take a look, another world back in the 60's

    • My Dad was a pilot, so I was privileged to ride in all but the earliest 049s, although he did fly at least 1 of those we know. I still love and prefer them.

    • When Halleys Comet visited we went on a Comet flight, I think a 737. As we flew into Oregon the cockpit door was open near where a video camera was mounted. I was peeking in and the crew invited me into the cockpit as we flew over Portland. Really an amazing experience. I have a tape from the flight that I may attempt to have transferred to DVD. Served on board was a Flaming Comet Ice-cream Sundae. I doubt that would happen today. I was surprised then.

  • There is one of these that still flies, at the Illawarra Regional Airport. In NSW , Australia. Her name is "Connie". The Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) show her off , once or twice every year. She's the pride of the fleet. Looks and sounds magnificent when she flies over my house.

  • Beautiful airplane! My three favourite American planes are the DC3-it was way ahead of it's time and still flies today, the Lockheed constellation for it's sheer beauty, and the Boeing 747-which shrank the world.

  • Especially fascinating to me because my father was a C-121C (Super Connie) pilot in the US Air Force in the 1950's. Unfortunately, he was killed in the crash of one at Dhahran AB Saudi Arabia on Dec 31, 1956, as command pilot. But still the most beautiful prop plane ever flown.

  • It’s so amazing to see a super coni in action. When I was a kid, the predecessor to the E3 AWACS was the EC121 Constellation based out of McClellan AFB, CA. I got a tour, but never got a flight in one. It was jammed packed with electronics, but it was a workhorse. Seeing the coni again brings back fond memories.

  • My favorite sound,the sound of round! I love the Connie,some outfit rebuilt one when I was a kid out at the downtown Kansas City Missouri airport. Seen it in the air dozens of times over the years. Not sure if it's still based outta the downtown airport or not. Was in TWA livery. Those big round mother's always sound like a big ol cam-ed big block! Love that lope!

  • I flew on the Connie from Hamilton AFB to Clark AFB. I loved every minute of it--even when the engine I was sitting next to burst into flames! I took pictures like crazy. The Captain feathered the starboard side's engine and we had two Navy fighters escort us for the hour trip back to Hickam AFB, where we spent a week at Ft Derusey, waiting for a new engine! When we got off the plane, a steward stood at the end of the stairs with her arm stretched out to me--"I need the camera." And I never saw it or my pictures, again.

  • Mam o man.!!!! It just never gets old.. Especially when you got to fly in one a few times. You had beautiful plush comfortable seats with big arm rests. Your meals were real food . Meatloaf , mashed potatoes and vegetables. Real silverware with big cloth napkins. Curtains on the windows not plastic pull downs. I used to love the night flights because you could see the prop blades glowing at night.. really loved flying back then.
