@@fatuzi to be honest that one was kind of a flop of a joke. album would not be possible if they didnt use pro tools. Even if they played the parts all perfectly, had all the right sound and reverb equipment that was period correct, and wrote everything with perfect timing, they would still need to splice multiple takes over each other. Layering the vocals, the leads, and the bass guitars when you dont have a full band is a death sentence. If you have two leads and a bass guitarist and a drummer, you can get some auxiliary vocals and all the lead instruments in one take. but things like shakers, lead vocals, harmonic vocals, and double stacked leads (improves clarity) you have to combine all those original recordings on to one master copy. that would take so fucking long it wouldnt even be funny knowing that they only have two people to actually play anything. They'd be stuck there waiting for ever and their pockets would prob run dry from the amount they would have to spend on studio hours. Things like pro tools and ableton are what give us the capability to do things quickly and efficiently both in terms of time and money.
Major props to: *Rob* for pushing through a full day of writing/recording while jet-lagged and dealing with physical issues. *Andrew* for absolutely crushing it and bringing the energy. *Rob Ruccia* for wrangling the chaos into Pro Tools. *The camera men/women and the rest of the crew* for documenting everything and providing excellent feedback and support. I love the heart-to-heart honesty from Rob towards the end. You can really tell that his spirits lifted up a bit for the last 30-minute push. Can't beat that final countdown ending either. All around fantastic work, and thanks for sharing!
The best music in history was all written and created either dead drunk, so stoned space looked small or dead tired. Or all at the same time. So, they were in the bare minimum mindspace to do this.

Hey Rob--just wanted to let you know this series of videos inspired me to do this for my bachelor party a couple years back. We had 5 band dudes and 15 other guys that have never played a lick of music in their life. It was an absolute riot. 11 songs in 3 days, most of them composed and tracked shitfaced hammered. One of the most fun things I have ever done. Thank you for making these every year!

Thanks for being vulnerable in your edit. I have to imagine it sucks to feel less than your best when you're in a place as legendary as that, but the vulnerability in the songs and the video form a piece of art that is raw, relatable, and sometimes uncomfortable - and that does a place like Abbey Road proud.

If I was the producer, I'd be on my knees BEGGING them to leave "Pretty Raw" as just two instruments, no overdubs. They *absolutely* made the right call there. When your song has the crew crying in the studio, you do not change a thing.

"It's so beautiful, I'm afraid you're going to damage it" is maybe the most perfect thing any human could possibly have said about the music that Rob and Andrew created in that specific moment. Y'all are so inspirational.
I love how the whole crew were practically having to beg them not to overwork that song as they often tend to do, they really heard the music and knew that the beauty in the rawness was greater than Andrew and Robs need for a "polished" song

I really love music but often struggle with coming up with stuff, and your videos help me get rid of thoughts like "it's not good enough" and realize that not everything that I do needs to be profound, and I can just have fun making music. I like how Andrew and Rob both were on a different energy level, but they work so well together, that the process just clicked like always. It's beautiful.
Rob contributed way more on this album than he probably realised at the time. The most emotional songs on this years album were his. He created the melody for pretty raw and usually is one of my favourite FOO songs. Make it through the night has FOO written all over it and again was Rob's song. They both contributed equally on this album and it shows. You two are musical geniuses and your chemistry together is unlike any other band. Hope Rob gets well soon. Another incredible album.

I'm convinced Rob X Andrew is the best collab to happen to KZhead. Andrew is a rare creative fountain. He has that McCartney ability to write a song about anything that's both sophisticated and catchy. Rob is mostly playing support here

Honestly, having that moment towards the end where Rob is feeling discouraged actually elevated this video so much. There's so much that goes into the creative process, and it feels so terrible when you feel like you can't or haven't contributed as much as you could have for reasons beyond your control. I've been there so many times in my life - it becomes a part of your work, and including that moment in the video shows insight and truth into what so many people go through - including musicians like Rob. Hang in there guys!!!

The fact that in this high stress, very limited time project, they took the time to just talk about how Rob kinda wasn't feeling it HIT. Rough patches suck, and the fact that he was so open about it and they took the time to listen and prop him up is incredible. Maybe, the video was a little lower energy, but the music is still good and they still put together something really special. That's what I love about this band, it is raw, spontaneous creativity with absolutely zero filter, for better or for worse
I feel bad for him. This is the best album they have released in my opinion though. He should not feel any shame for it. Even when feeling low he still made some amazing songs

As someone who has recorded twice this year under the cloud of medical difficulties, Andrew just sitting and reaffirming Rob during the listening made me cry. This is the one. I know y'all joked about this being the "rough album," but this album has felt the most complete of all of them. Every time they showed Rob playing "Pretty Raw" while up in the lounge, I was desperately hoping that he would bring it forward to record, easily my favorite moment on the album (and great editing on the video to foreshadow it!) And really really wonderful to see the support you were receiving from your friends, Rob. Our brains betray us sometimes, making it difficult to see the beauty we create. 17:30 the difference between FOO and the Beatles splitting up to worn on different songs is that the Beatles did it because at that point half of the time they couldn't stand to be working on the music together. Rob and Andrew can do it because they have complete trust in eachother to make something good. Even when Rob doesnt trust himself, Andrew trusts him and Rob trusts Andrew.
Honestly, writing music when you’re not feeling it and dealing with health issues but still getting something of quality finished is a sign of a great musician in my opinion. Get better soon Rob! 💜

Although Andrew and Rob were the sole musicians, it should be noted how much the people around them influenced the final product. This was truly a collective effort.
I mean, Rob Ruccia is basically the third member of the band proper, he's so involved and working his ass off in every one of these. Jake, Tamara, and the other technical/film staff are also wonderful and great consultants and cheerleaders
despite how rob was feeling this time around, i think that "usually" is genuinely my favorite song you guys have ever put out. there's something just so gut punching about how honest it is. rob's lyrics aren't usually all that poetic or flowery but he's so incredibly effective at writing lines that just cut straight through you. as someone who basically finds meaning and purpose in creating art and music, and who's felt that horrible sense of just feeling like you're off and not getting fulfillment out of your art anymore, that song just tore me up. i appreciate his honesty and vulnerability in writing and sharing it, and i really hope his medical troubles clear up. get well soon rob, we love you.

This is so similar to the "Get Back" documentary and it's so interesting to see how such a place can produce so much art and inspiration, regardless of the time period.

About the 45 minute mark, I’ve had my chronic fatigue syndrome got worse over the last couple years and I really relate. “I’m sorry, I feel like I’m not energetic enough, I hoped I’d be excited more” kind of vibe is my life a lot when I’ve made plans. I know you’ve personally been vague so I’m not going to speculate, but I hope you know we support you taking the time you need for whatever’s going on.
This comment spoke to me. I've only recently faced head-on an ongoing and very long undiagnosed - now diagnosed - chronic fatigue syndrome and brain fog and I resonate with this, the way it challenges my everyday plans and it even makes me question my identity at times due to expectations both my own and other's of me. It feels impossible to get anything done at times. I wish anyone else going through it nothing but the best, your health always comes first. Do what you love, listen to the songs that charge you up, don't forget to feel the sunlight on your skin and look at the colors. You have got this, don't not give up ❤️
First, it is hard to watch you so low Rob. It's been a few weeks, but if you still need time take it! Us loyal Foo freaks will be here when you feel ready to be back. Second, Such a wonderful expansion of the First of October sound. I LOVE this album. Rob might have felt it was subpar, but I am wowed with how much unique and different sounds you created in 12 hours. Also, I was worried when halfway through the video Rob hadn't mentioned the Monster Mash once.

Thank you for the honest depiction of your experience Rob. This years Album in a Day wasn't fun to watch, it was raw and emotional and had a lasting effect that lead to a really creative afternoon of song writing for me. I watched it on a day when I had every reason to feel happy, but didn't, and this video had a really strong positive impact. The 2023 Album in a Day was creatively inspiring and helped me write a song I'm really proud of! Thank you!

Can’t imagine the overbearing weight of trying to throw together an album or even to document this.. jet lagged! Anyone who’s travelled by a good number of zones is aware just how much worse it is going east than going west. Props guys!
Yes, flying east means having to wake up much earlier than you would want to, vs. having to wait a long time before sleeping when you fly west. It feels so much worse.
As a big fan of genre jumping bands like Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Ween, and Frank Zappa, First Of October had unironically become one of my favourite bands. Please do this every year until one of you dies.

To me Dorian has a double meaning. I get it’s about Andrew’s kid, but musician Ben Kweller just lost his 16 year old son also named Dorian in a car accident this year. The lyric Andrew screams, to be without you sent chills through my body cause his son who passed was the first thing I thought of.
Oh man, that really puts the song in a whole different context. That is so tragic.

I really like the insistence you tried that one song as an instrumental. I feel that a lot of truly great art isnt adding everything to the Thing, but more knowing everything you can take away and not need anything more. Like Ringo's drumming allowing for the space of the other guys. At risk of sounding too pothead, it's what he's *not* playing, maaaan.
Even if you dont feel it in the moment, the music you guys put out means a lot. You bring a great gift here for a lot of people
Love the album! Been on repeat listening to it multiple times! Fun how it became like Lennon/McCartney thing with them writing and playing on each others songs! And it was also cool to see how the studio and equipment really inspired them! Would’ve been fun for them to double track vocals like the Beatles did… but that would’ve taken double the time 🙃

As a beginner musician, these videos are so inspiring. Yalls raw creativity is so palpable. Not to mention the fantastic production of these videos, the tight edit, and clear vision. Amazing.
I’m so excited to watch this. Last Year was my favorite album so far! Fingers crossed this one tops it Edit: Now that I’m at the end of the video I can confirm this is my new favorite FoO Album! I know Rob wasn’t feeling amazing and was super down on himself for feeling like he wasn’t able to write, but as someone who has chronic pain, and has been struggling with mental health stuff for the last few years, Usually is my favorite song. It makes me cry in the best way. It’s the most relatable song I’ve ever heard. This album has the perfect balance between the silliness and joy that we come to expect from First of October but also it is so real and vulnerable too. Plus I finally got a purely instrumental song! Hope Rob is able to recover from his illness and feel better!

It's such a beautiful thing to watch two musicians at the top of their craft do their thing. It's like the two of you know a secret language that speaks to our souls.
16:29 The funny thing about this is that Tom Delonge and Mark Hoppus did the same thing together, but with lyrics. They were both told to go write a sheet of lyrics in seperate rooms, but when they came back and compared their lyrics they matched up perfectly. The two were just that great of friends.
Always the highlight of the year on KZhead - and thank you for leaving that moment in the edit where Rob opens up about his recent struggles. I've also been feeling cut off from writing for quite a while now and while it sucks it's good to know I'm not alone in that, and that there's still space for real, sincere creativity when you're feeling low.
