A computer being tossed in the trash? Heaven forbid! Watch me fix up this unwanted puppy into a useful computer again!

  • Picked up an XPS 8100 5 year ago at local thrift store for $30. Used it for 5 year then sold at craigslist for the same price of $30. They hold their used value very well. The onboard graphic died while I owned it but works fine with an external graphics card attached.

    • I use it as my editing rig. There's a little stuttering in the video when I scrub it but it works fine.

  • Dude, I just got one of these machines for free off Craigslist. I can’t believe someone would “throw away” something so awesome. Albeit it didn’t include a HDD so I supplied the boot HDD, plus added a second 3.5” HDD and a 2.5” HDD since I had an extra SATA port and power supply left. I also threw in a dang 16GB mSATA storage that I just had laying around since there was a mSATA slot on the mobo. I also added two 4GB RAM on top of the existing two, bring it up to 16GB RAM total. I do intend to install SSDs at some point but I had HDDs laying around already and didn’t wanna spend a lot of $.

    • *high fives* I got a 240 gig SSD and a 1 TB hard drive in mine. It's the machine I've been using to edit my videos on! Samsung SSDs go on sale regularly and ... trust me... you'll *love* the speed! Keep up the good work!

    • @@maladamedialabs4214hey man you actually might be able to help me with this inquiry. See I wanted to use an old m.2 SSD I have laying around to replace the boot drive on this machine, if that’s possible. Since it doesn’t have an m.2 slot, I would need an adapter of course. Can I use a SATA to m.2 adapter in order to connect the m.2 SSD I have into one of the SATA ports?

      @riffdex@riffdex4 ай бұрын
    • @@riffdex - I think there are m.2 to SATA adapters but I don't know how good they are. Sandisk 240 gig SSDs are going for 30 bucks on sale at Amazon - that's what I'm running. I use a standard spinning rust HD (1 terabyte) for deep storage. With 16 gigs of RAM you've got a pretty sweet machine!

    • @@maladamedialabs4214 I discovered the m.2 SSD I have probably won’t work because it’s NVME and a SATA to M.2 converter wouldn’t be able to use it in this machine.

    • @@maladamedialabs4214 I want to update the Dell 8500 to 32 GB RAM however, that is what the product specs page says is the maximum supported RAM in this machine. Someone told me a machine with max 32GB RAM likely wouldn’t support 2x16GB RAM, and therefore I would need to use 4x8GB RAM to get the maximum 32GB RAM probably in this machine. Do you know if it’s true? I prefer to use 2x16GB RAM sticks if it works with this configuration.

  • Can you tell me if the PCIe x1 expansion slots are Gen 2 or Gen 3? I used a program to display information about the motherboard and it stated PCIe Gen 3 but I suspect it is referring to the x16 slot only. If they are Gen 3 as well for the x1 slots that would be awesome, but im curious if they are just Gen 2.

    @riffdex@riffdex3 ай бұрын
    • I think you're correct - the x16 PCIe slot is Gen 3 and the rest are Gen 2. The manual isn't specific about it so I'm just guessing at it.

  • You said the mSATA port is a good upgrade path? What is a good use for this slot?

    @riffdex@riffdex4 ай бұрын
    • The mSATA port is a little faster than the regular SATA ports - however, I don't think it's a bootable drive. I haven't used it but if I did I'd use it to render videos. The original use was as a speed-up drive in Windows 7 as it was faster than the mechanical drive it originally came with.

    • @@riffdex I don't know anything about the AMD cards, but with Nvidia, you are limited to the GTX series cards. The newer RTX cards aren't compatible as far as I know, but even if they were, you wouldn't be able to get the most out of them due to the CPU being the bottle neck. I had a GTX 1050 Ti in mine for a while, but upgraded to a GTX 1060 6GB because the stock power supply had a 6-Pin connector. If I changed out the PSU, I could run GTX 1070, but I would probably stop there. The GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti are still up there in price, and probably wouldn't notice much of a difference due to the CPU.

    • Rufus will automatically make a USB installer that bypasses all the requirements. You can also make a Windows 10 USB and replace the "Install.wim" file which tricks it into installing 11 instead of 10, and the 10 installer won't check for the requirements.
