Especially frustrating to listen to some people never grown a morsel of food to feed anyone. I’m gonna start with a weekley #Soapbox about Farming food production and what we do every day to feed the world. #FarmingFoodRevolution

  • Weekly soapbox an excellent idea! Educate all and set those ignorant straight! Farmers feed the world! Thank you from across the pond! 💗

  • Thanks Gareth, brilliantly put! SAVE OUR FARMERS, otherwise we’re all doomed - fact!

  • Walking in our local dunes this morning we came across a small herd of ruby red cows. The national trust had put a sign up saying the cattle are there to help repair the dunes by increasing the biodiversity of plants and insects. What they didn't spell out is that they do this by grazing and more importantly crapping on the land. But at the same time we're being told that grazing livestock numbers must be reduced to save the planet!

  • It's all about free choice, if you want to eat meat, fine. If you want to be vegetarian or vegan, fine go for it. But DON'T keep trying to coerce, persuade, preach, or otherwise push your choices on others.

    • Since when did Gates, best mate of our next Conservative leader Penny, give a * about free choice?

  • Gareth, farmers are about the most important people on the planet! Keep farming forever - untouched by politicians, too!

  • I'm watching this while waiting for 2 mutton to be delivered for my freezer. Locally produced in Wales, small local abattoir & butcher. There is no finer nutrition. Eating animal based protein, after 30 years being a vegetarian, my health has been turned around from cripple to fully functioing. I grow chemical-free vegetables on 3 acres, too.

    • Stupid question... what capacity freezer do you need for 2 mutton (or even one). It's in my plans to move out of London and a purchase of a chest freezer is on the cards... Loin chops tonight... (healing autoimmune disease after being vegan for a few years)

    • @@NothingByHalves not to sound too "Captain Obvious" 🤣 but it depends on the size of the sheep, so breed and age count too. These were enormous!! The butcher said they were big, even for mutton. I didn't get the "hung weight" as I'd paid upfront for "2 mutton" flat rate of £360 for the lot ready processed into cuts, bagged and chilled.. i have a 303L freezer (upright) and I expect it all to go in there. Will freeze it in batches to optimise the process, kept in fridge until then. I have the bones and scraps bagged separately to make concentrated bone broth which will be canned in 1/2 pint jars, and all the fat to render also into 1/2 pint jars. I looked up "half cow" which apparently is about 400L so thats how I judged Iwould get the 2 mutton into a 300L freezer! Probably TMI but good luck with your move, and freezer etc. We also have a power bank 200W to run freezers if power goes down. Oh yes, rememver to look at how long the freezer keeps temperature without power - mine are 10 - 12 hours.

    • Has it really improved your health? I've not eaten meat for 34 yrs and seriously considering starting again if it will improve my health

    • @@lat1419 Now that was a fabulous in depth reply! Not TMI at all, but very useful. Laughed when you said you 'looked up "half cow"' but that's good to know too - although at this rate I will have an outbuilding full of freezers if I go down that road. I think I get that from my mum who used to have a large chest freezer, an upright freezer and a tall fridge/freezer, all full. Wow, these sound like whoppers - good luck with getting them in (it seriously hadn't crossed my mind on breed and age 😂) Sounds like you've thought of everything - and yes, great idea to check out a power bank too. Thank you!!

  • I don't think a vegetarian or vegan diet can be very healthy, if it is , why do they need to have supplements? .

  • Mixed farms, mixed diets, all sounds good common sense to me. Oh and where does one imagine the wildlife thrives the most? Precisely on those landscapes with diverse farming setups such as your own. Greater diversity breeds more biodiversity not less. Everything in life grows and dies and folks should not get over emotionally invested in believing anything else. Best wishes, Tony.

  • Dr Zoe Harcombe has a brilliant video on veganism. In addition to your points on soil health.. #1 - If everyone went vegan, that is basically wiping out all cows, sheep, pigs and chickens. Farmers do not keep pets. #2 If there are no domestic animals and the meat industry disappears, what will cats (obligate carnivores) eat? #3 Millions of cattle are reared for the meat industry in America. BILLIONS of small animals - mice, birds, rabbits, etc, are wiped out by combine harvesters, let alone the insects, and let alone the larger predators that depend on the ecosystem remaining intact. Bowl of muesli, anyone? Anyone?

    @NothingByHalves@NothingByHalvesАй бұрын
    • Bowl of muesli is probably (for me) the absolute worst thing imaginable. (1) the oats are totally indugestible and high fibre foods with crohns and ulcerative colitis is a disaster (bleeding bowels). (2) glyphosate is sprayed on oats pre-harvest to kill them so they dry out and make harvest /processing cheaper and easier. (3) oat starches, nuts and any added dried fruit are all converted into blood sugar leading to fat deposition, pre- and full diabetes and metabolic syndrome. So those of us with a certain genetic heritage, meat eating is the only way to get enough nutrients and maintain health. I was vegetarian for 30 years but i was sooooo ill. Bacon and eggs for breakfast, anyone?

      @lat1419@lat1419Ай бұрын
    • @@lat1419 Oh yes, muesli, that will do nicely for UC and Crohn's... ("but it's OATS!", say the industry, "they're good for you!!") I used to crash after eating them. No IBD here, but other autoimmune which affects my guts. I can't do egg whites, unfortunately, but bacon and egg yolks, yes please...

  • Full marks to you Gareth. Having been in the business, now well retired ~ farmers are our lifeline. Maybe we should bring back 'National Service' in a different form. Every young person spends time on a farm seeing food production. We'd also pick out the workers from the shirkers. They'd also find milk comes from a mammal ,whether a cow or goat, not from a carton or bottle.

    • @veganradiation eaten plant based since a teenager now in my 50s it's taken a toll on my health. I think I was brainwashed in my teens looking back by certain 'societys' ironically its militant vegans who have led me to that realisation. Decision made im going to return to meat eating...only local produced and killed though.

  • The fact that they find lab grown meat acceptable should tell you something. Herbivores exist but they also need to accept that omnivores also exist. It’s their choice not to eat meant, I choose meat ✌🏻❤️
