    • That turtle us dead by now. It was sick in the first place and even after all that it couldn't swim. It should have been taken to a rescue center put in fresh water to safely remove the nonsense and then said for rehab. Even if it could swim there's a reason it got like that but this one is dead unless someone who knew better found it after this. It's also painful removing thise hitchhikers by just ripping or scraping.

  • Y’all noooooo😭 speaking as someone who works at an aquarium that does extensive sea turtle rescue and rehab: PLEASE do not try to remove barnacles and growths like this yourself! This turtle needs to be brought to a medical center. The reason those growths are there is likely something far more dangerous that needs to be addressed. Healthy turtles do not get this level of growth on their shells. So if you see something like this, it’s a sign that this turtle is unwell and has been sick for a while. Scraping off the growths doesn’t solve the underlying issue. Also, doing so without any tools or pain medication can be extremely painful and stressful for the turtle. Often with this level of growth, barnacles will have borrowed through the turtle’s shell into live tissue. And just ripping them off like this without the expertise of a medical professional can do more harm than good. Not to mention that it is WAY stressful and not what the turtle needs most. Imagine if you had a the stomach flu or food poisoning and someone decided to “help” you by first detangling your hair, popping pimples, and exfoliating you when what you really need is fluids and someone to handle you very gently. It’s focusing on the wrong problem first and can worsen the underlying condition. TLDR: If you see a turtle like this, please don’t try to remove any barnacles yourself and just put it back. A turtle this sick needs medical attention from professionals.

  • Turtles get an infection of some type that makes them hold air so they can’t submerge. That’s one reason why it had so many barnacles on it. I think this turtle is sick because it stayed on the surface when released. Most will dive as soon as you put them back in the water. If anyone rescues a turtle and it doesn’t submerge, take it to a sea life refuge or call them to pick it up. Otherwise, they will eventually die if not treated by starving.

Humans are trying to survive, but we got more safety guarenteed... animals don't, they're lives are at risk every day. Prayerfully, people will recognize that and stop making animals' lives into a game. It breaks me when people make sick, cruel jokes about animals but there is truth in jokes 9/10 times. We don't deserve these precious creatures. 😔

Pulling them off, however, is EXTREMELY painful and will often result in stress and infection. Also, they rest on the surface like this, so it wasn't "unable to swim", it was just taking a nap. I am a marine biologist. This is why there are laws prohibiting the approach and capture of endangered sea turtles, even if you think you're helping.

If you find a sick turtle and can transport it safely then make a note of the location where you found it and take it to a marine wildlife rehab center. The turtle shell has muscles and blood vessels, meaning that every one of these barnicles placed on the outher shell and was removed, the turtle felt everything. It's like ripping your own skin. • If you truly want to save a sea turtle that's covered in barnacles then you bring it to shore and take them to a rehabilitation center for sea animals. What you don't realize is that when you remove the barnacles yourself you will injure the turtle way worse than the barnacles are doing to it. The reason barnacles attach is because the turtle is already sick and injured. Rehabbers will know how to remove the barnacles safely without injuring the turtles shell further and can nurse them back to health and then release them back to the wild. What you probably don't realize is the turtles shell is literally its skin. It feels every injury of an uneducated person's attempt to help it by scraping and cutting off the barnacles. Please if you really want to help them keep them cool and out of the sun and take them back to shore and turn over their care to a rehabber.

I was wondering how he SAVED it,even though throwing it back in the water would only cause the same problem to occur again. I didn't know that these crabs and barnacles were attached because of sickness. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I love animals of all kinds.and believe in helping when we can.❤

    • Zoologist and wildlife rehabber here. The turtle was fine. Turtles can feel their shells, and the barnacles bury themselves deep down into the shell tissues. By ripping them off like that, you are causing immense pain to the turtle. Barnacles on turtles is _normal._ Sea turtles often rest at the water's surface like this. It was fine. See all the blood on it before it was put back in the water? Yeah, those are likely going to get infected. This guy just screwed that poor turtle when it was fine to begin with.
