    • @@niamhs1925 It's mentioned at least a few times. In the show it's a "blink and you'll miss it" line. I also don't like how friendly the show made Marie and Nadia, where in the book they're pretty two-faced at first and (along with Zoya) say some really mean victim-blaming things about Genya. It is nice to have this sort of representation of mean girls because it's three-dimensional and doesn't either idolize or damn them, just shows them as flawed and their actions as having consequences and affecting people (isolating Genya), and makes their eventual character arcs much better.

  • I loved this adaptation but I didn't like that the Darkling nonchalantly revealed his real name to Alina, while in the books he only reveals it to her in book 3 and in a very complicated scene that portrays how manipulative the Darkling can be

    • I agree. i was so annoyed when he just casually mentions his name. And i also hated that everyone called him Genereal Kirigan instead of just "The Darkling". I just made him sound less threathing and more like a "normal" person

  • I’m not surprised they found a way to include the Crows. While the Alina/Mal/Darkling story is the centerpiece of the grishaverse, the Crows are by far more popular. And they definitely helped flesh out the world/story. In my honest opinion, the three actors NAILED IT. I know they softened Kaz some, but without access to his thought process and internal monologue he comes off as a total psychopath. So that was probably for the best.

    • Mal was extremely toxic friend/love interest in the books(fat shamed alina, slutshamed her, cheated on her, wanted her to give up her powers which made her healthy and happy, she came to him to talk about her trauma and he stopped her and started talking about HIS feelings, didnt even looked at her before she became sun summoner, was pissed that she was happy and safe in the little palace and much more). The worst thing is that he was always seen as a "good" guy and never apologised for any of his mistakes. They completly changed his character in the show and changed his lines so they sounded okay and not as horiblle as they were in the books. And even tho they tried to make us like mal and malina in the show it was just plain boring and EXTREMELY forced. They were trying to show it down our throats so hard. Also they made alina personality all around mal which I am extremelly pissed about. Like instead of showing me that flashback I saw 20 times already they should have show us alinas training but no.... I hope that they will change it in the second season bcs a LOT of people noticed this.

In the show, the viewers understand that Kaz is the leader of the Dregs while on the books he works for a man named Per Haskell; during "Crooked Kingdom" Kaz finally overthrews him and becomes the leader of the Dregs during a very iconic moment. 2. I never read the books, but I've seen a lot of ppl who have read the books talk about her backstory and I'd love to know more 2. Some trauma lol. I would like to see how the death of their friends affect Alina and Mal. Alina basically sent all the cartographers to their deaths and i find it strange how it was never brought up again. 3. I'd love to see Alina interact with other Shu characters! I remember there was Botkin but he didn't really have any meaningful connection with Alina in the show 4. Alina's backstory??? I wouldn't mind if this was never further explored because sometimes i think it's an interesting choice for the main character to have a pretty basic backstory. But i also think that it's kinda interesting that her father was Ravkan and her mother was Shu. How did that happen?

  • I saw the episodes and was hooked, I spend the rest of the week reading the 3 books because I couldn't wait for Netflix. And while reading the books, considering the 1st season covers just about the 1st book of the trilogy, they did a great job. As I was reading the book and thought of the series, the way they adapted it ended up making a lot more sense. Over the years we've had hideous adaptations, but this one thrived. It was pretty much true to the source material while changing just enough details to make for a great binge [SPOILERS bellow - all 3 books & series] A big difference from the book is how Alina being half Shu makes her ostracized, contrasting a lot with how she was simply a sickly and "weak" girl in the book. I believe they changed it to ring more true to today's audiences, after this past year being so charged with racially derived violence against minorities (in the USA, but there were other incidents globally). In the end, the book makes a bit more sense since she became sick from not using her power, but to make an actress go back and forth between sickly and healthy would be very taxing on both her and the production, even with makeup and CGI. In the end, Jessie Mei Li did an amazing job, and I don't feel the need at all for that to be implemented in the series! I wonder if they will keep the white hair though... 🤔 Some people are talking about the differences in the portrayal of the Darklin. I believe Alina kissing him first makes a little more sense while making him just that little bit eviler. Alina kissing the Darkling is about her confidence, about feeling wanted and loved, whereas with Mal she felt overlooked. However, the Darkling in the series acts surprised, but as you see the series unfold, you can read his reaction as a "change of plans". In the books, you're left a bit out of the loop. You never know if he wants to control Alina, or if his belief that she's his one true equal makes him long for more. More than once, I was left questioning. He didn't have to kiss her that many times, he didn't have to share some of his knowledge, he didn't have to be surprised or appreciative of her efforts and capabilities. But he was. In the series, Kirigan's "lonely boy" facade builds around these acts of the Darkling. You see him longing for connection, but broken enough that lack of one fuels his intent rather than making him reconsider. He's just been broken one too many times to care. He still sees Alina as his one true equal, but whether they are romantically involved or not is about the same in his plans. By all means, he thought it would make things easier, so he played the game. I like that the Alina of the series is more resourceful and confident than in the books, but I hope we can still see her descent into "madness" as she struggles to find if what she wants is power, security, or happiness. 👍 EDIT: A BIG change they made right at the first episode was WHY Alina was going into the Fold. In the books, she was always meant to be going, but in the series, she burnt some maps so at least she was made to go, but her whole team ended up going with her. I think this speaks to Alina's resourcefulness while starting her (quite big) kill list. The deadly consequences of her actions really weigh on Alina throughout the books, so this scene was, for me, a nod to that. Also, this scene speaks on how adaptation means making it interesting on a new platform, and it was pure drama and hubris, a series MUST have. As for Mal, I really liked their interpretation, but he's not nearly as flirty as in the books. In the books, he's said to charm the ladies with just a smile but also said to actively seek out relationships with them (even if it's just a "tumble"). In the series, he's a puppy for Alina, but in the books, the scene in the clearing is just that more powerful because he really hadn't seen her as his object of affection before. Personally, the scene in the last book when Alina asks him if he had ever thought of her romantically in Keramezin is my favorite. Although Alina discovers she likes to make Mal blush, he's never as awkward as in that scene in all of the books 😂 I think Jessie and Archie would pull off that scene marvelously! [This isn't much of a critique, more of a personal interpretation, because the fact that Alina and Mal never kiss makes Shadow and Bone very refreshing amongst other Netflix series. I'm tired of gratuitous s*x with lack of chemistry, and in Shadow and Bone they pulled the chemistry off without a kiss. That deserves a great deal of appreciation.] Lastly, I just love how they built the world. I'm a sucker for the Romanovs and seeing the Russian historic references like that almost made me want them in the books. I hope to see more of that world-building in the rest of the series, cause that made the world just so amazing and alive. The more diverse cast doesn't affect me at all. Fedyor and Ivan's relationship is so cute, and Marie and Nadia are adorable. I hope they keep Nadia and Tamar, since they are actually cannon. Also, I feel the changes in Genya's storyline were more about closure, to make sure we had some answers if a season 2 wasn't picked up. Knowing now or later doesn't really affect Alina, the point is she feels heartbroken for Genya's betrail. PS: As a last comment, I ended up feeling that Freddy actually looked more like the Darkling than Ben Barnes (but I haven't read the Crows Duology yet). Ben is absolutely charming, but he looks a teeny bit more like a Christian Grey type of character than the Darkling 😅

  • I believe the interpretation is incorrect regarding the finale of Season 1, especially with regards to the amplifiers. Because it wasn't just killing the animal that granted the amplifiers power, it was also choosing not to kill it. In the books, Alina was not acting out of desperation over Mal at all. Sure she feared for his death, and worried her inability to resist The Darkling wouldn't allow her to save him. However, in addition to that fear, she was also realizing that she always had the power to resist The Darkling. Her internal communication with the amplifier around her neck opened her eyes to the reality that she had equal power over Marazova's Stag because she had granted it mercy, instead of killing it. Knowing from the power of the amplifier itself that she was one equal footing with The Darkling, she only had to own that power within herself to overcome his hold on her. The show cheapens this by making it a simple "stab the antler from his hand when he wasn't looking." That comes across as more happenstance and luck, where the book really went in depth on her personal growth in this moment from being mousey and a bit timid into a strong, confident, independent, female character that knew her power and her worth.

  • Saying Mal was problematic and bitter seems a bit subjective. As a reader, I’ve always saw Mal as just a teenage boy facing all these changes; Alina becoming a grisha, losing his friends, being the outsider, etc. The fact that the book was of Alina’s pov gave us little of how Mal’s thoughts and feelings for Alina. Book Mal has received a lot of hate because people seem to turn a blind eye to the Darklings’ manipulation and only see Mal as just whiny and a “boring” love interest. Love the show coz now people finally get to “see” Mal as the Mal i’ve always thought of him to be.

Then it made them change the testing process of just hurting a grisha so they would react by using powers they didn't know they had? That would mean any time a grisha gets hurt their powers would react. In the books human amplifiers do exist, and THEY are the ones who test grisha. Six of crows even has fjerdans use human amplifers to try to weed out grisha among them.
