The way Guga played those last two games... fearless! He knew Muster wouldn't hand it to him and truly went for his shots.
Amazing how nobody knew him before the match and in the end everyone was celebrating like he was already an idol! GUGA ❤
Fantastic! At that time brasilians practically didn't know tennis. After this edition of Rolan Garros, and during many years, Brazil stopped to watch Guga in his numerous ATP's finals. It was a passion as if it were the brasilian soccer team. Great Guga.
Wow! What a great match! I think this was the turning point on Guga's career. From that day on he knew he could really achieve great things in professional tennis. The rest is history! We brazilians are very proud of our hero. Thanks Guga!
Luxilon
Underachieved imho! Should have achieved way way more, especially outside of clay! I understand that fast courts weren't his strongest suites, but could and should have won a couple Australian Open titles between 1999 and 2003! And his RG haul should have been longer as well with at least another title or even two! His real slam tally should have been in 6-8 title range to rank alongside tennis greats like Edberg, Becker, McEnroe, Wilander, Agassi, Connors and Lendl! His name should also have been the one amongst them! But instead his career was cut dramatically short, even worse than Borg!…
This match was ahead of its time.
Obrigado, Guga!
Only legends know how epic that game was.
watched it live on tv and I was highly rooting for Gustavo. Gustavo is one of the best roland garros champion of all time if not the best
@@taopaille-paille4992 Yeah so true bro

5:13 Kuerten backhand on the rise winner & slow-mo replay. 6:59 beautifully disguised backhand drop shot winner from baseline. 8:10 perfectly struck backhand winner from about mid court on the rise. 8:36 another perfectly disguised backhand drop shot winner. 13:45 with his third stroke (backhand taken on the rise) Kuerten opens up the court and sets up the rest of the point (aggressive forehand from the mid court, half volley, and a forehand volley winner). 19:50 short ball taken on the rise for a backhand winner and struck about as cleanly and aggressively as a ball can be struck. 29:20 all balls taken on the rise, then advance to net with solid volley winner. 29:50 BEAUTIFUL backhand return winner.
My God I love watching these two brilliant baseliners battle it out with their awesome single-handed backhands...such elegance & beauty!!
Certainly one of the most important matches of Guga's career. Muster was his toughest opponent this whole tournament, well the toughest opponent you could possibly face on clay in the mid 90s overall, especially in Bo5 Matches, and this match is in the end what made him the player he went on to be.
Jaja no. His toughest opponent in his 3 championships was yevgeny kafelnikov. Kuerten himself said that
@@edwinivanrodriguez3769 I meant this one tournament
Larga vida Gustavo Kuerten.
In winning this tournament, Kuerten beat THREE French Open champions. I haven't looked it up, but I'm guessing that has never been done before.
There are like 4 champions since 2005 Beating the particular 1 is like Beating 4 of the past ones😂
Yes, Kuerten takes the worst draw someone can imagine
Gustavo "luxilon strings" Kuerten
I love Guga but I'm a bigger Pete Sampras fan and and when he won the 1st US Open in 1990 he beat 4 number ones in a row. Becker Lendal McEnroe and Agassi in the final !
See the difference of people behaviour, the most of them were on the side of Kuerten because Kuerten inspired friendship, he seemed the guy of the front door house. Great player and pleasant boy, i miss the brasilian in today tennis. Greetings from Rome Italy
Valeu Guga!
Some people often forget/are not aware how great some tennis players were before The Big Three. It's almost as if only The Big Three know how to play first-class tennis. Gustavo Kuerten was on the same level as any of the Big Three, on clay that is, although, to be honest, probably not on Nadal's best level on clay.
Only on clay, and definitely not on nadal's level
@@matteo964 Guga beat Sampras and Agassi on HARD COURTS at the same tournament...and Federer on clay easily, and won RG 3 times, the hardest slam to win, so yeah, he is on their level...Just see the respect they have for him, The Djoker even drew a heart on the court to celebrate him on his only FO win.
@@user-tz8ze3tp7m which is completely different from what big 3 level means. Occasionally beating them is indeed good but winning 15+ slams is a whole other story
@@matteo964 He only didn't get to that because of injury, otherwise he certainly had a shot of making it.
Rubbish. KUERTEN won cos he started using Luxilon strings first and he never got past a 1/4 final in any of the other 3 slams. He is nowhere near the greats
Kuerten's backhand was on fire!!
Would be great to see Guga's other matches from the three times he won, particularly against Kafelnikov and Ferrero. 😊
People who think that thiem invented open stance one handed backhand should watch guga once.
I think more people think Wawrinka invented open stance.
@@purplecoffinman8510 yeah I've heard this a lot but Stan's was kinda like semi open stance. He only used it when he was short on time. And he did never attack from that position. Only guga and almagro attacked (Now thiem).
I feel bad for those who have never watched Guga play before
Guga invented the use of Luxilon strings

This channel is doing a good job by using geo-restrictions for the recently uploaded 2020 Final- The Film. Good going . Keep it up.

all good matches selection my friend
I remember being a kid and watching this match, I don't know why I was drawn to watch it. I really like Guga, maybe his clothes and style made me cheer for him, a few years later I understood that it was purely charisma, he was the most charismatic tennis player for me. Great backhand, I only saw Wawrinka as someone at the same level of backhand. I didn't remember the match being so hard. I remember well the 2001 final because I was older... anyway, I miss Guga.
Quite possibly the coolest guy ever to win a Slam. Maybe Borg, then Guga. Either way, Guga is a legend. His wins at RG were really impressive.
I love how Muster looks 45 while he’s 29 here.
Grande Guga‼
Amazing win. Guga, one of my favourite players of all times.
As the most famous Austrian of all time said , "I will be returning"
"I'll be back!" 😉
When did Hitler say that?
@@auh786 lol
I remember that year being a fairy tale run for Gustavo Kuerten. What a player! Love that he always has a smile on his face (except perhaps when he's playing ).😊

Great great game epic!!! Guga Kuerten's one handed Backhands The best of ALL times!!!!!!
4:52 What backhand!
Que vitória ! Spectacular victory
Guga, the best legend. He came to Roland Garros, nobody there knew him and.... He won. For me he will always be the best, and he is a so great person.
So incredible!!
Guga, very proundy brazilian people have you!
It´s exciting, even today, to see the fantastic "manezinho da Ilha" having fun at Roland Garros. Eternal Guga!
The man that mad Poly string a must!
Yeah Luxilon made him a star
G.K.. What A Stat Never Won A Match at R.G Before 1997.. Another Crazy Stat.. Since da Turn of The Century To Date .. May 31th - 2023 Only 8 ATP - Players Have Won French Open.. Rafa ( 14 ) Guga ( 2 ) Novak ( 2 ) Gaston Caudio ( 1 ) Juan Carlos ( 1 ) Stan ( 1 ) Roger ( 1 ) Albert Costa ( 1 )..
Id like to see Kuerten x Medvedev epic 5 sets in 4th round
Jogão; Guguinha meteu o loco nesse RG. Tinha 3 anos de idade
Brilliant match
Guga, the prince of clay.
Court nº1 has been removed since but it was the best ever. Even bottom price seat holders could stand at the rail just behind the players. Guga sooo deserved this win, he was one of the most charismatic players to grace the French Open winner list
ORGULHO
Oh such an elegant and flexible Guga looking a lot like Roger actually. Muster was an austrian peasant, brute and pumping all the time like a freight train :) he didn't last much.
I remember the days when Muster was a BOSS on clay.
At that time think he was over 30 games without losing on clay
Em 2022 ainda uma aula!
Pessoal nao parou de aplaudir ele no final do jogo , ate ele sair da quadra
3:4 5.Satz🙈 was spielt Kürten gegen einen heissgelaufenen Muster da? Absolute Weltklasse!
Very strong backhand, great Kuerten

Guga's run here was insane, only amplified by The Best Outfit of any champ from '96-06.

Guga looks very young when he was young

What racquet was Thomas Muster playing with during this match? I thought he was a Head Pro Tour 630 guy like Guga Edit- NVM it is the PT630 in a paintjob of some sort... you can tell by the CAP grommets
white Kneissl Tom's Reach Machine racquet, which had a longer handle and a 28-inch frame

Guga is an idol!

I'm firmly of the opinion that Rafa is the greatest claycourter of all time, and would be in any era (except maybe vs Borg with a wood racket)....but I'm also of the opinion that he wouldnt have 13 french open titles if he had to go through Guga, Muster, Bruguera, etc.
Kuerten's backhand was fantastic over the last several games of the 5th set. Muster would have beaten almost anyone else playing the way he did.
The austrian wasn't meant to dance the samba... What a fantastic player was Kuerten...
Muster was more solid from the baseline than even Guga but as soon as Guga uses variety like drop shots or attacks the net muster struggles. Also I notice muster has a better forehand but Guga has a clearly better backhand.
All true. Also important: Guga serves better than Muster.
Muster was very intense.
Mentally thought, coming back after losing the first set.
Muster was my 2nd favorite player after Agassi.
👍👍👍👍👍
Guga is a better claycourter than Federer and Djokovic 👍
Everybody agrees with that i think
Maybe, maybe not. I like Guga, great player and a nice guy, but Guga didn't have to deal with some one called Nadal in most of his clay tournament career. If he did, it is unlikely he would have had as much success on clay. Likewise, if it were not for Nadal, Federer and Djokovic would have had more success on clay
@@Kelveron but at the same time, federer's problem wasn't guga's problem so I think it would have been exciting to watch.
@@Kelveron prime Nadal vs prime Guga is something I'd pay good money to see.
@@Kelveron Yeah, but post prime and already with the rip injury Guga defeated Federer in straight sets at RG 2004, when Roger was already in his prime years. If prime Djokovic lost to Wawrinka, Guga could have beaten him too, i'm pretty sure. Guga was insane on clay and he could give Nadal a lot of trouble because he could take his monstrous backhand on the rise without any trouble and would suffer less from Nadal's extreme forehand spin. But problably Nadal would still win more in the H2H, because he is the king of clay.
Quem aí está lendo o livro do Guga?
😮💨😭😢😥 The last Match from Thomas Muster in Paris 😮💨😭😢😥 Then he ended his career. It was his last match at Roland Garros.😮💨😭😢😥
Sampras's last wimbledon match was the weird one against Bastl. Federer last played against Hurkacz of all people/ at wimbledon & singles in general. The list goes on, just is what it is, nobody cares about it too much/ the Legacy is More Important
@@Dman9fp Now Sampras retired after winning The US
It was on a friday....
Muster = Nadal with 1-handed backhand.
Nadal volleys a million times better than what Muster used to, has a more powerful forehand, wasn't a natural lefty which is why his backhand can flick winners when stretched, knows when to come forward, and uses the entire court better than Muster.
34:00 Lol
