There are humanitarian evils that have been committed by both the USA &. Chinese governments. The difference being that USA is more democratic. China claims their stance is for the people. But if the Chinese people don’t have a say, then it’s not the people’s version of governance but rather an authoritarian version in the guise of virtue. America isn’t a shining example either, but at least there is free speech without jail time or maybe even death, by being labeled as an enemy of the state.

The german people also have a serious case of conquered peoples syndrome. Until Germany has serious political protests nothing will ever change. Diplomacy is an art for the Chinese, for most of its 5,000 year history China, been broken up between different warlords, Emperors and Kings so diplomacy skills have been developed over many millenia. I keep hearing that China is becoming more authoritarian. As a Brit living in China now for 16 years, I see the people here are very happy and trust the government to continue to serve the people. We have freedoms. We are free to live our lives without fear of crime, drugs, mass shootings, terrorism, and racism. Contrary to popular belief, China is not a police state. In fact I have more interactions with the police spending 2 weeks in New York than I have had in 16 years here.

If America can be like China - instead of promoting war, promote trade and peace, then the whole world will be peaceful and progressing from each other economy.

He is not a professor. He was the former Chinese foreign minister under Hu Jintao and was FM before Yang Jiechi(who was before the current FM Wang Yi). Aka he is basically on the same level as Cheney as a statesman so Cheney can't hold any level of status over him or act like he doesn't know what he is talking about.
One is a world peace and prosperity enabler, while the other is a serious war criminal. It is a shame to place them on the same stage.
Thank you for sharing this. In a way it is a valuable historical document because it crystalizes two points of view, one backward looking, one forward looking. On one side you have the US unable to look to the future because they still were baffled by China somehow beating them at their own game, nearly 20 years after they were allowed to join the WTO. On the other you have China looking to a co-operative role in the future of the world. The fact that Cheney had to rely on notes and someone else's thoughts and the diplomat could speak eloquently (and sharply on point) without, spoke volumes.

That wasn't a "debate" because DC could not respond due to the Chinese guy going second. If it were me I would've followed up with how Mao starved to death 60 million Chinese with his failed communist policies. Or how the only reason Chinese currency is worth "anything" is due to Americans allowing them to buy our debt. Before that, no one would accept China's currency until we approved it. DC was set up because he could not respond.
Cheney had to read his statement. His Excellency, Li Zhaoxing, the Chinese diplomat was able to deliver a stinging rebuttal, in a foreign language, without notes. That's a fairly good example of the massive gulf in intellectual prowess between the Americans and the Global Majority.
