How To Fix A Leaking Rear Axle (Replace Axle Seals)

2024 ж. 20 Мам.

Learn how to replace axle seals on a solid rear axle that is leaking gear oil. You will know the axle seals are bad because gear oil will drip down the tires and sling everywhere. Luckily with this video you can see the process of replacing the axle seals. First you need to drain the differential. Next you need to unscrew the 4 nuts holding in the axle. Then you need to use a slide hammer to pop the axle out and now you have access to the seal. Use a seal puller tool to pop the seal out and then drive the new one in with a large socket or a seal driver tool. Now would be a good time to replace the rear wheel bearing as well and to do that you need to cut the bearing in half to remove it and then use a pipe with a hammer (or a hydraulic press) to press the new one on.

  • This was a fun, helpful collab with Donut and thank you Craftsman for coming in clutch with overnighting the tools I needed to make the repair! As you guys saw, I have moved to a new driveway and it's been pretty challenging to move over 1000mi away, all by myself. I hope to get back on track with consistent videos in the new place in the next couple months or so. I'm still sleeping on a blow up bed but my tools and cars are here so time to unpack and get the ball rolling. The new place will hopefully allow me to make videos more efficiently so more content for you guys!!! I appreciate all the supportive comments and the continued patience! • 12:27 Yup, VERY important step. If you ever take the shaft out, clean the old grease as best you can and put new grease in. A lot of people skip this step that could gain them quite a few miles/km from that bearing. If you're already in, do it, even if you have to drop everything and run to the parts store to get the grease. I've heard this story so many times "dammit, wish i'd changed the bearings when i changed the seal" and similar. If the bearing's not shot, just pack it with fresh grease, it does a heck of a lot more than one think.

  • Hey Chris, glad to see you back. You might want to mention that some axles have C clips instead of bearing retention. For those, you'll need to remove the differential cover first. From there, you can remove the c clips from the end of the axle shafts. These are found on old Chevys for example.

  • Great advice sliding the tire under the car. I've had a jack stand fail while I was under the car. I was in the process of replacing the transmission, so luckily it was suspended from a rafter and still partially attached to the car. Since then, I leave the weight on the jack as well as the jack stands AND slide the tire under the car whenever possible. After an experience like that, I'm overly cautious!

  • Hay Chris Fix. Great video on the axle seals. One thing I want to point out when I see the rear seals leaking. Is to always check the axle vent cap because if it’s clogged it could be letting pressure build up and that will push the oil out past the seals. On my Toyota I changed mine and when I unscrewed it I heard a poof that told me there was pressure. The seals weren’t leaking yet but it was just a matter of time.
