China has huge ambitions for the 21st century. But it’s demographic problems will be a significant challenge on the way there.
This includes a paid sponsored promotion which had no part in the writing, editing, or production of the rest of the video.
Music by Epidemic Sound: epidemicsound.com
Demographic explanations are inspired in part by several chapters of “The Accidental Superpower” by Peter Zeihan. It’s a great book and although this video is only a small slice (and not the main argument), it’s very interesting and worth reading. He’s the source of a couple specific phrasings like “countries can’t manufacture 18 year olds” which I think help explain the issue well.

    • I don't really understand what the problem is. China needs more children and are willing to write checks for them? Fine. Then write checks to hire state-workers to care for children, grow children in a lab, and hand them off to be raised by the paid state workers, where they will be raised in a specific way to be productive earners, exactly in the mold that China would want. They are the one country that would *A)* have few moral objections to a project like this *B)* have the sweeping political power to implement this on a whim.

    • I consider chinese preference of new-born boys as a remaining of agricultral society. Had to admit that we have just stepped out from an agricultural society for a few decades. families used to need to have enough men to fight (yes, physically) against other families and villages. and many people have not step out of that sterotype. people used RPGs and rifles to fight against other villages even in 1980s. and 20 years before that, during the cultural revolution, people robbed local army and they fought with tanks and warships. every man received military training because we believed Soviet Union were about to invade us. so guess how hard it would be to make one change mind of preferring male if he or she was brought up in such a crazy society. that is also the reason why our people are so willing to give up our right of owning guns.

    • @IKSDE XD well people do get money from government during income tax for having kids if they dont make much money anyways. Also there's girls who go to school sometimes free or with scholarships offered just because they reproduced early 🙄 Its also a bad thing since in my case a 3.8 gpa still doesnt get me any money for college while a girl who has worse grades than me and decided to have a kid, gets offered money. My mom says "my daughters are very smart, have to work while taking classes while these other girls get pregnant and yet they get money to attend college but mine dont?"

Then break your heart with their poor decision making, then break your savings with poor education decisions. The plus side is immeasurable however, children are part of our life cycle, they complete us. I’m referring to biology and psychology, men and women, our bodies release hormones to steer our emotions to guide us as parents. It is difficult to explain, but people simply can’t understand it without having experienced it. I truly feel sad for people who can’t, or won’t have children. Pets are great, but they’re not kids... General education should be compressed to 10 years by removing useless subjects. Third, cultivate entrepreneurship in General Education.

    • No, our much maligned millennial population (I'm the first and oldest of the Millennial's at the age of 35) are the largest population and working block. There is still a lot of immigration to this country, making up for women in the workforce and deciding to have one, two, or no kids. America actually really has our population covered and we really did dodge a huge bullet with our population purely by chance. I'm not saying we planned it or anything, it was pure sheer luck this time. However, Japan, all of Europe and China are gonna crash hard on their populations. Maybe America can become a beacon of hope for humanity still, just maybe. Ps, screw all the goddamn people that I'm talking about whites only! We have a very diverse population with many people from all over the world still coming here, so something has got to still be a little bright. I don't want anyone on this Earth to suffer these huge changes, and if I had the power to fix the ills on this planet, I would absolutely spread the wealth to keep humanity going. I guess I'm one of the few last optimists that still believe everyone can work together and hopefully work our species to the stars. It sounds corny, but I can still dream of a hopeful future, the thought police can f**k themselves on this one.

    • 0Clewi0 yea, the government does have laws in place like when having a pregnancy exam (late stage) the doctor is by law forbidden to inform the parents about the sex of the child. Also abandoning a child (such as girl infant) has really heavy punishment (up to death penalty) because it is man slaughter/murder against minors. Although it didn’t stop people from doing those practices because how uneducated most people were back in the days. It is however rare now days especially in the cities, where people are much more educated than before.

  • On the brighter side, the one child policy has actually made feminism more prevalent in China, as families give their all for their daughters and raise them as they would a son in the past, making it so that the women born in this period are more educated and successful in the business world than before. The women have higher standards and sense of self-worth and aren’t afraid to go for what they want now, something some other countries can’t claim to.
