This game is classic. It actually feels like when you defeat an enemy army, or kill an important enemy character it has a huge impact on the map as a whole. Where would I find these mods and then how to install them, off the base standard game from Steam?
The feels in the intro tho :( Jokes aside, one of the best campaigns (imo) in both original and the Crusaders. Stainless Steel late era with Byzantium is one of the most difficult yet satisfying campaigns. Set in after 4th crusade, you have fractured territory and powerful Latin Empire with full stacks patrolling around, Turks and Venetians and advancing Mongol horde closing in. It feels so good to recapture Constantinople and launch invasion to Italy. Also one of the best AAR was about Byzantium campaign just before siege of Constantinople. It was about the life of the emperor's son and his life in becoming the emperor. So cool about driving Ottomans back, retaking Holy Lands and retaking Italy.

Usually I go full mounted archers for field armies with a melee calvary contigent in the center and assemble a small elite heavy infantry based army with heavy calvary on the flanks for settlement assault. There are no problems that can't be solved with enough vardairotai and varingians. Also, never neglect the navy, destroying sicilian invasion forces trying to cross the adriatic feels amazing. Also using varingians as a seaborn assault force for either capturing or ransacking poorly defended settlements plus demolishing everything its a usefull strategy for debilitating the enemy, also a great way to fix budgetery deficits.
