  • I visited the UK last year. Every single building is made of bricks. Hard to imagine a dude like this laid every single one of them by hand. The bricklayers union must be the most powerful institution in the entire British Empire.

    • @ツ Yes, But a disproportionately high amount of them are.

      @disceva6443@disceva64435 жыл бұрын
    • @ツ That's one city, and a relatively small one at that. Google "British houses" and 90% of them are mostly, if not all made of bricks.

      @disceva6443@disceva64435 жыл бұрын
    • Yes I admit it, I embellished the amount of buildings made of brick in the UK. It just didn’t seem as funny to say “a large proportion” or “90%” so I went with “every single”. I apologize if anyone took offense to my generalization about buildings in the UK. If nothing else at least it got an interesting conversation about a fascinating topic going: How many buildings in the UK are made of bricks? We might never know. Some scholars maintain every single, but I’m skeptical of that claim now.

  • Hi youtube, ex-brickalyer here : This is what an experienced bricklayer looks like. It's axtually quite hard to be fast/smooth like he is and lay your bricks at the right angle and with the right force. The secret is in the mortar. If it's too liquid your brick will drown/will be soaky as hell and your joints are going to be ruined. If your mortar is too dry you will need a hammer to lay your brick and that will ruin the 3 layers underneath. And on top of that if you lay too much/not enough mortar you will do a messy job or will constantly be correcting every bricks you lay. Great job overall :)

If you have a scaffold to deliver the bricks and mortar at waist level, you can lay on the order of 350 an hour versus 125 an hour when you have to bend over. Frank Gilbreth introduced the non-stooping scaffold more than 100 years ago. Henry Ford also said no job should require anybody to bend over because it is tiring and motion-inefficient.

  • There's something incredibly appealing about this line of work. It's relaxed and there's no stress. I hardly think this is like other jobs that make people miserable.

    • Believe me, it's a terrible job. In this video the guy didn't have much pressure but usually time is money and bricklayers have to hurry all day long and the bricks are most of the time much bigger and heavier. After some years back pain and arthritis are guaranteed. As a construction worker I love raising a wall once every other month by myself, but not more often than that.

    • I actually worked like this for a month and worse thing is in summer when the sun is killing you, you have no energy to work because of that and when you take a break you then are scared that boss will arrive and see you not working haha
