Bill Nye uses the power of Twitter to once again answer common questions about science. When will teleportation happen? Will tardigrades take over the moon? How do planes work? What does a neutron do? If you took all the animals of the ocean, how much shallower would the water get? Bill answers all these questions, and more!

    • I've figured out why teachers can be like that. It's partly because they've basically been living in their subject for years and are sometimes taken by surprise by what a person who doesn't know much about it can come up with, but there's also the frustration that can come with years of dealing with people who don't seem to take in the knowledge that is given to them. For every smart-aleck kid who thinks he's come up with a "clever" joke in class instead of actually paying attention, there's a groaning teacher who's already heard that same dumb joke at least once a year in every class they've taught in the last ten years and can also remember that same joke being a thing back when they students themselves. The smart-aleck thinks that what they said is new and hilarious and that they've just invented it; the teacher knows that it's old, and nobody thinks the same joke is funny the 150th time they've heard it. They'd just be happy if you could remember the concept they were trying to explain to you 5 minutes ago that you probably still won't understand when you have a college degree because you never paid attention any of the times when it was discussed in class.

  • The teleportation thing: there are multitudes of theories and ideas about how it works, and all of those how multitudes of issues that make pulling it off tricky. Like, do we need to factor in motion? Speed of origin vs speed of destination? Physical obstructions? Transfer method? Safe reconstitution? Potential safety and health issues? Failsafes, emergency procedures and rescue plans? Temporal and spatial transference? Frankly, the answer to teleportation, short of actual, literal Magic, may not be something achievable in the timeframe of human existence.

The top take longer than the air molecules going underneath which creates a difference in pressure which causes the lifting effect. It's not just about how fast you're going, although technically you can make a barn fly if it was going fast enough and had wings. As my flight instructor used to tell us all the time

  • I dispute that last answer. Insects DO, indeed, experience gravity, but it's unlikely that it plays anything like as significant a role in their lives as it does in ours, since (as best we can tell) gravity is tied to mass. And insects have much, much smaller mass -- which is a hard limit imposed by atmospheric density and other physical facts about our world. Moreover! Many insects have a daily relationship with surface tension that would absolutely boggle us. Thus: I'd argue that, by and large, insects *don't* have a particularly comparable relationship with gravity, though they do experience it, in their way. But, they have more intimate and important relationships with at least one force that directly affects us so slightly as to be imperceptible.
