The Mind-Controlled Bionic Arm With a Sense of Touch
In the first episode of Humans+, Motherboard dives into the world of future prosthetics, and the people working on closing the gap between man and machine.
We follow Melissa Loomis, an amputee from Ohio, who had experimental nerve reversal surgery and is going to Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Lab to test out its latest Modular Prosthetic Limb, a cutting-edge bionic arm funded in part by DARPA. Neuro-interfacing machinery is a game changer in terms rehabilitating patients, but what possibilities do these advancements open for the future?

I thought about this a couple of times and arrived to a conclusion. Recently science is advancing so fast that we wake up one day and can literally be astonished by what innovation is bringing. NEVER in history we could have that, in fact, all advances in technology where very incremental so that we never perceive the 'change'. However, now this is not true anymore. And now each year is going to be full of incredible breakthroughs, they will be so 'futuristic' that we will even call them miracles.

Watema 3 Ok
Yeah. But after becoming chinese business product, it will be cheap. May be 3000 dollar per hand.
I think that in 2030 or 2040 it s gonna get way cheaper but it s gonna be something usual
When it comes to pricing technology, there are really two major elements at play. One is how cheaply it can be assembled and at what rate it can be made fully ready for distribution. The second is how much above the production cost it has to be marketed at in order to keep the product profitable. Currently, the arm, and likely many of its components are all likely either the highest end electronic components they could reasonably get their hands on, or components that were built from scratch, or at least very basic elements for specific use in the experiments. Should this technology become the standard, or close to, for prosthetic limbs, you'd see a lot of the components become more standard in their manufacturing, especially ones that are core to the functionality regardless of what specific limb it's being implemented in. At that point, the main thing that would hold price up would be relatively low demand. Now I can't rattle off amputation statistics from the top of my head or really spout, but I feel like it would still be several grand, maybe even cost as much as a car, but it'd be something you could acquire through the use of insurance, a loan, or a combination. Additional production demand for the components could also come from things like maintenance and service kits, possibly the construction of limbs for those who would willing be prosthetized (though I feel like the majority of people who say they would chop their arm off for a robotic one would feel a bit different if they were faced with paperwork and the reality of having it done), as well as possibly for assistance androids or task robots should those technologies have adequate breakthroughs.
This is just incredible. A bright shine of hope for all who lost an limp. Also it takes a bit of fear, if something ever happen to oneself.

Its a bit tricky as optic nerves are connecting directly to the brain. Something goes wrong and you are a drooling vegetable. I did a gripper project that's not even close to something like this. These have wires for tendons, pulleys to increase mechanical advantage, and electro-mechanical brakes to hold the position. The control system is based on a fuzzy controller. The phalanges are underactuated, and the actuators are electrical. Mine was just a basic 2 finger 3 phalanges design, with underactuated 4 bar mechanism to power it. It didn't have any sensors, apart from the pneumatic pressure sensor. It was hard enough, and was a damn simplified version of these underactuated arms shown in the video. The video thing had like 120 sensors, mine had just one 🤣🤣🤣 It would take years to develop one like it.

They literally were inspired by Deus Ex to do this by using what they know about mechanics? I guess it's interesting in a way, but I'm not sure if we are going to be advanced enough in ten years to make prosthetic arms carry implanted weapons for soldiers, and Navy Seals, etc. to use in the military and stuff like that. I mean, if they do become that advanced in the future, they will of course only give those implants to approved military soldiers, CIA, Navy Seals, anyone in those positions of life that are trusted with great responsibility. Not sure if where the advancements will be in ten years, lol

I agree. it could be created far cheaper and far more effectively. maybe it would be less fancy, but I dont pay for fancy. our biological bodies work already close to like machines, we simply need to be inspired by nature. tendons in our bodies pull and push, pistons in machine shall pull and push. connect it directly to your flesh, your biological tendons fused with the metal wires. even your feeling can be returned artificially. apply thin plastic surface plates over the metal cover and in between copper leaf with wired connection to an circuit that connects to your nerves, it shall be your translator of electric current. keep replacing until you cannot replace anymore. let the only thing that needs nutrition be your brain, for you can even replace heart and lungs artificially so you no longer need to think about it. the blood only needs to flow between three organs. flesh is weak in all meanings of the word. steel is pure and strong.

To get an idea of what's being done, consider that most of the muscles used to manipulate the hand are located on the forearm. So this is using the principle that the nerves used to interact with the hand are still present further up the arm.
What I immediately noticed here is how smooth and seamless the movements were. Usually with arms like these, the movements are kind of stiff, detached. But here? The arm acts like a human one, it’s got that smoothness as it moves it’s joints around and I think that’s amazing

This is literally one of the most important things to happen in our lifetime... Sadly, I don't think many even understand the relevance of such a breakthrough .
This is literally not very important at all. Most amputees given these types of prosthetics end up hardly ever using them, or just using a simple arm with only an elbow joint and a hook hand. Our scientific understandings and technology are just not developed enough in this year to make these types of prosthetic more convenient to use than it would be to just not use them.

Ah shieeet, i bet that's why she was so underwelmed. In her head she was like: "You had one job..." xD
I don’t think the arm was made custom to her yet, I think it was an arm they had that they added the sensors to
I think they are testing and calibrating, that would not be her final arm, and it is easier to control it in "mirror mode" than to have her right side control an arm to her left side (opposite right).
While the intended use for amputees is a noble cause, I must wonder... ... what if I had 3 arms?
Violet Dirge I’d guess the brain wouldn’t take it.
Fair point. I most likely wouldn’t be able to properly link it to my brain like I would were it a prosthetic.
you bring up an interesting point. what if you attached a limb that you never had before, such as a tail. would the body adapt its own perception and accept the new limb?
I imagine the prosthetic arm would just copy the movements of which ever arm it is linked to in your brain. Not sure if it could work independently as if you had three arms, unless you just imagine moving it but not actually move your real arms. I wonder if you could have a telescopic prosthetic arm that lengthens as you imagine reaching out and stretching.
A tail we might have some connection with our coccyx, but I wonder how we would cope with a tentacle or even wheels in replace of legs. Would the notion of running simply make the wheels go fast? Perhaps there could be some sort of interface developed that transferred the human brain wave to the correct corresponding motion (as in running making the wheels go faster).
I’m so happy nervous systems work on the limbs, makes them very successful for getting bionic ones.
This field of science needs to be widely supported by all nations, it's a life saver for a lot of people
That’s literally insane, imagine what it will be like in a couple years. I’m witnessing history as we speak.
I wonder why this isn't a bigger deal
@@Br-kc2jy It won't be as fun as it is let's watch and enjoy... damn the future is kinda weird lol
@@Br-kc2jy i guess because US doctors think there’s not enough money or profit in it
Every single human that ever lived was witnessing history haha
anyway, What's in this video was 5 years ago from when you commented this
Pretty soon, the handicap parking spot will be at the farthest end of the parking lot instead of the front.
aus2908 lol true
aus2908 or they will just be removed completely
Both wrong lol, the handicap spot will be for people who aren't augmented
Awesome, research is great when used for the right purpose.
I’m so happy for her.
That moment when you notice the bionic arm was made for the left arm😂
Kyle Baisa uh no
See? See!!!
that's what I thoght, this comment should be higher
Well it’s her right arm... kat anyone?
🙂💥🔫
4:35 "It's more expensive than my whole life" xD Damn, and the look on his face... It's actually sad
LoL hes actually worth a lot if hes healthy and sold organs to the black market. A kidney, an eye, a lung... you can live with only one of each. Plus the amount he makes a year, what he has saved up and level of education. I'm sure hes worth more than that prosthetic.
TheRedstoneDiamond || TRD Yeah and you would know because you’ve made some random ass low level “robots”? I don’t think you understand how complex those arms actually are and how difficult it is to make them. I’m pretty sure if the thing only took 1.5k then they would’ve only spent that but clearly they didn’t.
Hero Arm costs somewhere around 154.95-519.54 dollars
Hardware costs
Sensors than monitor nerves are expensive as hell.
To see how happy she was to have her arm back....to see how happy the surgeon was to see this work for this woman...fucking awesome.
Think about all the time, knowledge, and money we've had to gain over the years, to even attempt to recreate something as simple as an arm, remember to appreciate what you have, even the simple things
raccoon takes her arm yet she wears a cute little raccoon printed shirt. 3:11 "Forgiveness"
Looks like a panda
Pandas have a separations between the black patches around the eyes, raccoons has a mask like pattern
True, the biggest difference the humans have over animals is being able to think rationally and overcome out instincts if the situation requires so
You might be surprised at how many humans can't overcome their instincts. Many instincts are chemical based and cannot easily be overcome logic.
I said able to. You can do anything you've set your mind to within a reasonable range of course.
Man imagine Gamer Arms in the future and say "Sorry guys my arm is lagging."
Lmfao
Our?
“I’m didn’t mean to hit you my arm lagged!”
I have no clue how she’s so chill about essentially telepathically controlling a robot arm. If that were me, id be so excited
its got fluid movements, so cool
