I Ride China's Luxury Sleeper Train / 票价两三万多真的值吗?我坐中国最高级火车

I travel aboard China's luxury sleeper train, running through the Hulunbuir prairie, in Inner Mongolia. But how does it compare to luxury train travel in other countries?
The train, known as The Hulunbuir, is a retro-fitted 'green skin' slow train; the kind of train that once dominated China's train tracks.
Known as the Grassland Forest Tourism Train route, it travels through the remotest areas of Hulunbuir, allowing people to get off at a number of amazing beauty spots. Passengers then stay for a few days in each location prior to getting back on the train as they head to the next stop.
Luxury sleeper cabins and 4-course meals meals await the passengers, but tickets range from 20,000-30,000 RMB ($2700-$4100). Is it worth it?

  • I just find it so fascinating that because of Hulunbuir's status as Prefecture-level city, it's one of the largest cities anywhere by area. Definitely doesn't feel like it's all a city of course, and I'm glad for that as that prairie is absolutely breathtaking. And yes, having the train run for all four seasons and being more efficient is a good thing. The pandemic has taught us that we took things for granted, and that tourism is just as important to an economy as other industries. Without trains, the places the train stops at are further isolated from the rest of the country. An example of inconvenient rail is in Chicago, some Metra services ONLY operate during rush-hour and not during the day. So if you wanted to party in Chicago and get home late, but missed the last train? Too bad!

That's why when I went to my meetings with Xi Jinping, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin in Beijing, Hanoi, and Vladivostok respectively, I chose to go by train. I am the only world leader that regularly uses a train, a tradition started by my grandpa, and I'd like to keep it that way.

    • Difficult, the first consideration of Chinese state-owned enterprises is not to make profits but to serve the people (which is also the requirement of the Communist system), which was decided in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China! It's hard to change! Only when it is fully popularized (it is still in the process of continuous expansion) will the next step be to consider commercial profitability!

    • 一群自说自话的人真的很好笑,你觉得有钱有闲的退休老人会去这种地方伐?有钱能做的事情太多了能去的地方太多了好吗?不要一厢情愿的认为一些你的认知里觉得合理的事情,很幼稚

  • Oof, that British rail roast...it's pretty sad how the UK is the birthplace of the railway, and yet trains there are treated by the British government as if they're nothing. Look how long High Speed 2's been taking! And other cities in the UK could've had REGIONAL EUROSTAR at one point (yes, that was a plan) that would've connected cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow all the way to Paris and Brussels. Why didn't it happen? Because of customs concerns and the rise of low-cost airlines. Trains are even treated poorly in the US. Majority of the tracks are owned by freight companies rather than the government through Amtrak. This is why China's trains are so efficient, the tracks are government-owned. The Northeast Corridor on the other hand IS owned by Amtrak and that's why the trains on that line are electric and the Acela high-speed train uses that route between Boston and Washington, DC. Trains connected the East Coast to the West Coast before highways did, and towns popped up because of trains like here on Long Island, and the LIRR remains the busiest commuter rail in North America.

    • 5 days including trips at each destination. There is a cheaper ticket at around 1,9000 I believe.
