Tesla Model X: What I Learned After 6 Months of Ownership | Review & Impressions

We took delivery of our 2023 Tesla Model X Refresh 6 months ago now. Although it seems that time has flown by, we have put nearly 10k miles on the Model X, and have learned a lot about the car. There are many things to love about the refresh Model X, but there are also some things that could be better.
After 6 months and 9k miles, I have had a chance to calculate our total cost of ownership of our Model X. I have taken this information and compared it to a similar ICE vehicle, in this case, an Audi Q7. I have to estimate costs to the best of my ability as I dont actually have to pay for supercharging due to referral miles awarded over the years. After comparing the 2, there is nearly $2k in savings just in electricity vs gas.
On the other hand, our Model X was delivered after nearly $20k in price reductions. Unfortunately the Model X has come down another $20k since then and now qualifies for the EV tax credit. This additional $7,500 is only available for the 5 passenger Model X with no additional options. That said, you are now able to select any color you like for no additional cost. So although my configuration would not qualify for the EV Tax Credit, it certainly has an impact on the used car values for all Model X's.
The highlights of the Model X include a plush ride, fast acceleration, reasonably efficient in comparison to the Model Y, impressively fast charging, HW4 upgrades, premium soft touch materials with a better build quality than before and great storage and passenger space.
On the flip side, the car is starting to present some rattles and squeaks, service appointments are about 1 month out to fix issues, depreciation is massive, despite now coming standard with a wheel the turn signal and horn are still in inconvenient locations, the falcon doors have already had some issues and the Model X as a whole is very expensive.
No car is going to be perfect, and when you step into the limited world of EV's, there are sometimes even more compromises. That said, assuming the Model X is in budget, this car is amazing. It is super fast and comes with Tesla's untouchable Supercharging network. The overall comfort and charging speed really are the highlights, and in an electric car, those are 2 very important things.
In the end, its bigger, more comfortable, faster, better charging smoother riding SUV. It does come at a larger price tag, and will come with more issues in reliability, but can offer an amazing driving experience. It will be hard to overcome the value and reliability of the Model Y, so if you can afford it, it may be worth seriously considering to enjoy the various features exclusive to the Model X.

Squeezed in a $79,990 “Tax Edition” Model X right before end of 2023. So far the 2023 has been awesome, none of the issues you described. Great video!

I've had a M3 and MY (my current car). Each has had a few minor issues. However, they have never compromised the safety of the car or left me stranded. I've had that experience with new gas powered vehicles! I only would consider a Tesla because of the superior charging experience and the incredible software. I am renting FSD. While expensive, I enjoy the heck out of using it everywhere. Keep up the great work!

  • Great video. The MX is tempting since the price reduction. My MS driver seat also used to squeak. I bought Lithium Grease off Amzn, removed the head rest, and greased up the back plate all around. Hasn't squeaked since. Also the seat belt latch can rub on the seat, you can put foam or grease between the latch and seat to solve that issue.

Pro tip: when I traded, I configured my new X, got a price, but then checked to see if there were any “inventory” cars available. And there was! Love the yoke because you can hang your hands on it. You have to practice using turn signals. We upgraded from 2018 M3 because it’s noisy and the X feels twice as good. Falcon doors are awesome just needs coordinated announces opening and closing. We keep cars over 100k and way after warranty so fyi we found out one headlight is $2400 😳. No other issues except range is 70% but charging is pleasant. Looking into rear camber arms.

  • A friend bought the MX soon after its first version was released and he still enjoys it. I don't know his repair experience but those early ones may have had more than today's issues. I decided on the MY and received it in March 2022 and it has performed very well. With the all season Michelin tires, it has handled Colorado winters, torrential rain, high winds and summer heat absolutely flawlessly. I don't need the extra room in the MX and am also glad I skipped the falcon doors for their complexity. I would not choose the MX even with today's HW4 as I still don't need those extra features. The cost is still not worth the issues to my mind so overall, if I were to trade in the MY, I would choose the refreshed MY once it is released especially with HW4 once it has matured a couple years.

Can you set the suspension so it stays on one setting.I agree with you about the horn on the steering wheel. Don't know why they did that. The signals are a little awkward but got used to it pretty quickly. After I noticed there was a little lifted line between the signals it was easier to tap the correct direction.

Never had issues with the Falcon doors. At 190k I had to replace bushings on the front driver side suspension. That's about it. Unfortunately, while on the freeway, a truck's wheel came off and caused a fair amount of damage. Due to the high mileage, my insurance declared the car totalled. I'll be getting another Model x, hopefully that lasts over 200 thousand miles as well. Model x is well worth the money for performance and flexing 😁

At the tail end of my free FSD it was finally enabled. After several hair-raising mishaps, I don't trust it and won't bother with it until the software for Hardware 4 catches up with Hardware 3. The noise deadening feature makes it's own noises. And I was only slightly bummed that I paid more for it than current buyers. I have had the same experience on buying and selling houses. I love the car. I wouldn't go back to the bumpy Model Y or Model 3. I am enjoying the free supercharging I get for three years. And I also really like the extra features you mentioned. I am used to the turn signals, but I don't like searching for the horn button. I'm glad Tesla fixed that on the new Model 3.

The only real difference is I have the 5 seat version, which I wanted because I have even more trunk room and leg room in back seat. So I can carry 4 golfers and bags very easy. I also don’t have any rattles or other issues with strange warnings. I did just notice that a front sensor is missing, and the trim on front passenger side wheel has come loose, but that is probably from car wash or something like that. Service is very fast where I live and didn’t even have to wait a week.

  • We have a 2022 Model X Plaid and have a little over 29k miles on it (Took delivery on September of 2022). Home is off grid (100% solar) we have saved literally thousands on gas. So far after 1.5 years of ownership we have saved tons of cash in comparison. Have had Tesla EVs for 5 years and have a total savings of over $35k in saving for gas between the two (based on how much we drive it). Fortunately, have not had any issues with any of the teslas in the past 5 years and battery degradation has been miraculously 0 for both cars... Model 3 had some paint issues (Which tesla fixed), Y was perfect (no issues at all) and the Model X we had was just a falcon wing door alignment but that's it. Most maintenance we have had so far has just been Tires.

  • We sold our 2017 Model X 100D last year… absolutely loved that car. Bought a Model Y Performance due to the prices of a new Model X. However, while we love the Model Y and it is the best in its segment in terms of price, space and overall package, it is a big downgrade if you have gotten used to all the extras you get in a Model X. Miss the screen in front of the driver, miss the bigger seats, miss the falcon doors (amazing in tight parking spaces with kids or stuff in the back), miss the regular electric doors in the front (I still put my foot on the brake a year later expecting my door to close 😢), and we miss the extra space. We might have to save up for a new Model X in a couple of years, nothing in the electric market beats the overall package you get for that price imo.

    • May I ask why you sold it? I’m looking around at used 2016-18 Model X’s since the price gap for newer ones are too much. Should I go ahead and buy one? I currently have a Mazda CX9. The falcon doors and space is what is attracting me but I heard Teslas battery doesn’t do well in the winter. Just scared of going away from gas.

Can only imagine the time Hertz has spent teaching people to operate these cars just to get them out of the lot. Sure I can learn, and I may be able to teach my wife, but as a senior, .... why? Do not have the interest, spent all my energy over the years figuring out DOS and dip switch settings and generations of printer and video and phone charging cables. Progress I had no choice but to follow. But, I can still get an EV I can get into that have the controls that have worked well for many decades (while trying to remember not to put gas in it). Difference for the sake of being different is a sales gimmick that probably best works on the young. Big Tesla fan for all the other reasons though.

  • Hi it seems like we both bought the model x around the same time. I indeed am bummed about the price dropping and I’m still underwater with my loan. I have a slightly different opinion on the yoke. I learned that if I place my left hand on the yoke just so my thumb rests on the raised bar I can operate the turn signals easier. I simply push/lean my thumb upward and the signal turns for a right hand turn similar to flicking the stalk upwards , and press downward on the thumb and the left blinker turns on . Try it after a few minutes you should find that it will solve your having to look . Muscle memory! On the other hand I totally agree with you on the bloody horn position. Tesla put it back in the center for the y they should not have moved it in my opinion. Muscle memory is too strong for it to overcome the ingrained reaction of pressing the center of the wheel with my right hand! Besides that when I turn the yoke to the right my right hand is positioned on top and guess what ,, you got it I operate the horn because it is right there. Pressure on the top right of the yoke operates the horn ugh. Great video.

There is a red line on top of the screen version of the car and when pressing the open door button on either falcon door there is a funky beep. They sent a Mobile tech and naturally the doors opened for him . No sooner than he left and the doors gave me the error again. This time I videoed the whole situation and sent it into service. While I was in the car they (remote service) having reviewed the video , had me repeat the process . I showed with an outside view that there was nothing on top of the car inside I showed the red line and pressed the buttons. They then tried to open the doors remotely and then the technician took a bries pause and did something remotely came back and scheduled a service center appointment. He said the sonic sensor on top of the car was failing and I have an appointment in three weeks so they can access the sensor from inside the roof. Incase any one is in any of the back seats and it happens I have to hold the app falcon door open button for 15-20 seconds and it will pop the lock and then I have to manually lift the door to open. I will then have to force the door down to the lock position (not tight just so the door is touching the lock) then press and hold the button till it locks. Since you mentioned this happened to you , and you have young children I thought you might like to know how to respond.

The X is definitely larger and more comfortable than our Y. While our Y has served us well with the 7 seats, getting back there takes some gymnastics. The frunk and trunk are much larger in the X and the falcon wing doors are a must (ok - really really nice to have) if you have kids in getting them in and out. Also love the fact that I can control the back screen from the front when in park. Sound system is great. Only thing I’ve disliked this far is the self presenting doors. Always opens when I walk pass - and sometimes it won’t close so had to turn that feature odd. Acceleration is great as expected but haven’t had a chance to really launch it yet. Some things to consider is that it will eat up the rear tire’s quickly due to the camber - I’ve ordered some aftermarket adjustments to lessen the camber to avoid having to replace the rear tires due to uneven wear.

  • I loved this video, especially with the comparison between the Model X and comparable ICE vehicle in size. One factor you didn't cover is that the Audi Q7 would've traveled 9,000 miles a lot faster, with a lot less headache, getting a real 550 miles of range and taking 10 minutes to fill up.

    @davidhunternyc1@davidhunternyc1Ай бұрын
    • But remember that’s 10 minutes to fill up every time. The Tesla only takes you waiting when you are road tripping. I plug in the garage, never go to the gas station to fill ip

  • Planning, planning, planning..... Just ordered my MX. This will be my 4th EV in the garage. First was a CODA, then a Model 3 and a Bimmer i3, the MX will be next. Do I expect the MX as trouble-free as the first 3? Absolutely not! I know there will be more trips to the service center. That is price to pay when an wife and I want a big, comfortable, and luxury EV for travel (we are both retired). Electricity cost for us? Zero! We installed oversized solar panels on our roof big enough to support TWO EV's - my son's Model 3 and my Bimmer i3. Now he runs away with his new wife, my monthly electricity bill is negative. I don't expect that to change with the MX. What electricity cost?

  • We are looking at the Model X because of the Falcon doors. I am my mothers Caregiver and she is wheelchair bound and I use a lift to get her into our Model Y. It is difficult because I have to watch out with the opening of the car and not hit her head and then once I clear her head her bottom hits the seat so have to raise her a little to get her over the seat. In the Model X the Falcon doors eliminates that problem because I can lift her up high enough to clear the seat and not worry about hitting her head. So I do think it is worth it. It's the only car that makes it so much easier to get her into.

  • I’ve owned a Model S (leased) which I gave back for a Model X (pre-Raven) in 2018. I love my Tesla, but I wouldn’t do the Model X again simply because of the gull wing doors. They are cool and they get attention, but they are also a real pain. I’ve lived in Tampa, Orlando, and Nashville and while I’m not comparing Apples to Apples the Orlando Service Center is hands down the worst service center I’ve been to from a customer perspective. I’ve had a lot of issues with my Model X from delivery paint issues to wrong configuration. I’ve been locked out of the vehicle twice because the 12 v battery died with no warning. I had the HV battery fail and needed replacement in the middle of the pandemic which took 3 months. It also took more effort than it should have to get Tesla to make it right. All that said though I’d still pick a Tesla every day of the week. The service side needs work, but in some centers you would never know this is an issue such as Nashville (at least in my experience). If you are in Orlando it is a huge issue. They can fix those things though and I view them as a temporary inconvenience. I do worry about all these companies adopting the Tesla chargers and Superchargers getting congested, but that really doesn’t affect me too much since 90% of my charging is at home. But as I said, I can’t imagine my next car not being a Tesla.

  • Ordered one in Ultra Red 5 seat to get the tax break. Moving on from my Mustang Mach e. I'll take a hit on that but the price drop helps absorb that loss. I like the MME, but it's just not a Tesla, and the X's charging curve is soooo good it's worth the $$ for me over the Y. I just hope I don't have too many service issues. If they are minor I can live with that.

  • What do I do? I have a 2023 X with none of the issues you've mentioned on your X. And that's my point, your issues and constant complaining is about your vehicle, not every X that is produced. I would suggest at this point you request a buyback. The fit and finish on mine is flawless, wing doors lock and load without any issues, no squeaks in the seats. I honestly feel left out of the constant negativity about a vehicle that I feel is one of the finest on the road today. Suggestion, somehow unload your X lemon and keep the Y, and may I say, happy trails to you.

    • lol, I have NEVER been inside of a Model X that was flawless. This isn't just B*ing and complaining, this is educating people on what to be prepared for so they aren't disappointed. Imagine if I made a fake video praising its perfection. What do you think would happen when the "masses" go to take delivery and there are issues just like this? They'd be pissed and I would have no credibility, kind of like you with your statement. I dont think you are lying about your car being flawless,i have just never seen one before, and even you suggest you feel left out of all these people having issues. hint, its not that everyone else is wrong and you alone are right... By the way, and this one is hard for some people to understand, IT IS OK TO BE CRITICAL OF SOMETHING AND LIKE IT...the 2 are not mutually exclusive.
