TAJIKISTAN: Everything You Need to Know

Tajikistan is one of the only countries that has gotten poorer since the end of the Soviet Union. After its Civil War in the 1990s much of its state has been captured by one man and his family.
This video is the last in a series of three about Tajikistan and it's social and historical context.

    • "Persian countries" ??? Does Iran soley represent Persian or farsi , that should be called a Persian country !? What happens to other Iranian (enthics maz , gilak , blaoch , kurd , Lur , talysh , tat kormanj , ...) , what about the Azeri , Turkmen , Arabs , ... . If Iran does soley represent Persian , remove the name IRAN , CALL the shithole Persia . Afghanistan also has pashto ... Tajikistan also has the pamiris . Both of whom , their languages belong to the Eastern Iranian languages . It's not clear , elaborate more

  • Bro, You did a great blog about my first home. Better than anybody. You were so impartial and open minded. I personally appreciate it. I used to live there for 22 years. I got married and then moved to Russia barely speaking russian. Now I live in Montreal speaking 5 languages on daily basis and honestly don't miss Tadjikistan. But my mother still lives there and what I try to explain to my kids " There is another world outside Canada and other 7 billions of people live in poverty like I did. You were right while explaining political situation. Some places are not built for democracy and religious liberty causes immediate war like in Afghanistan. With all pros and cons I like our president because Tadjikistan is at least an open country and tourists like you can go and visit and show this different world. When people ask me where I'm from, nobody knows about Tadjikistan except Iranians. Hope one day I go back home to show my kids this strange but beautiful land. For sure tajiks are the most kind people in the world. I remember how we survived during a civil war when I was a kid. I hope you liked this trip and it made you a little bit happier with all we have in western world. Best regards.

  • Born and raised in a very large cold industrial Soviet city in Siberia where food was rationed by coupons since 1980, I was lucky to have relatives in the Soviet Central Asia and as a child visited them two or three times with my father. The impression I had from that warm sunny and abundant in good food lands will stay in my memory forever. Tajiks are kind people, in my opinion not treated fairly by Russians during in the USSR. At best the attitude was patronizing, at worth - fear and hate. As a Canadian now, I am so enjoying your unbiased videos, Alex! Thanks!

It certainly beats those created by the professional institutions like the BBC, NPR, etc. It provided an excellent overview of the country in summary form, while also providing depth, balance, subtlety and nuance. The contrast between portions that were heavy in information and clips from travel experiences kept me from suffering from info overload, or the doc falling into yet another travel vlog. Your delivery of the commentary was really excellent - wonderful pacing, clear articulation, beautifully spoken. I look forward to watching many more of your videos. Thank you!

  • OMG did anyone notice the guy selling nuts and spitting at minute 34. Looks to me he spat in the nuts. Great documentary indeed ; loved it and well done for being so incognito and stealth that you caught the guy spitting (im hoping not in the food, but it sure looks like he's adding moisture to the dry pistachios) without without him knowing ha ha ha.

  • Btw, all the restrictions you mentioned on typical Islamic practices, I think, is good for that country (and any country - for that matter). Otherwise, you see that where freedom is provided on Islamic practices, what happens in the world. They all will cry for Hijab, all men will have beards, will have Arabic names for kids, will have schools with Islamic studies and not modern science and maths, etc. And finally it would be like neighbor - Afghanistan.
