What are your thoughts on this breaktaking look into Alex Honnold's life?
Breaktaking
God doesn't exist. Well it was a nice break watching this. But it also took my breath away.
Amazing stuff and great soundtrack - can we some more information about the latter? What are the artists and tracks?
Alex Honnold saying "at least I'm good at this" reminds me of what Ken Bradshaw said in the Billabong Odyssey "I'm not a great competitor...but I am a good surfer". Awe inspiring understatement. Peace.
The filming is dizzy-ing and lags because of it
Ive been spinning in my bedroom for 6 minutes. Was worth it.
And then you fell lmao
You can move the surroundings by swiping your fingers dude...
Lol same
@@michaeltyomin2128 its called VR.. you know, the reason this video was created??
Lol😂
This is probably the best use of 360 cameras that I've ever seen. It actually made my stomach drop to watch Alex mid climb. The shots were incredible too. I think you must have got some of them with a drone right? I like how you took the drone out of the shot though. I'd love to see more videos like this. Great video!!
definitely the best use of 360 I've seen as well. I don't think they got these shots with a drone though - rather I would guess a mechanical rig
Agreed, this actually worked!
Awesome ! Do you know if we can move around with a keyboard shortcut ? Otherwise than the mouse
@@lighteenblind Click the circle with arrows at upper left, then you'll be able to move around with arrow keys.
No, they probably fixed those camera to the rock previously, abseiling with rope from the top. Then removing the fixing hardware from the image is simple as you only have to recreate similar rock to the surrounding, a pretty easy job
I fell 20 times just while watching this
Hhahahaha :D
Ive watched Free Solo many times and I have also watched Alex's other climbing videos as well, but I still cannot grasp what he really did on El Cap. I find myself so fascinated and intrigued by his mind, his athleticism, and even philanthropy. He's all around just a great guy doing what he really does, not for anyone but himself. Amazing.
I normally am annoyed by 360 video, but this seemed like the ideal environment and situation where that completeness of view and freedom did bring more to watching. Spot on music, editing, and voice. Good job.
100% agreed
Yup same here, I didn't even realize it was 360 video at first LOL when I realized I was about to close it but decided to rewind abit and watch and I don't regret it. That was sick.
Do agree with your comment but must say 360 is still not really cracking it for me - at least for now.
See it in VR. That is something else.
I paused the video so he can take a quick rest
unfunny overused comment
Jay Ko lmaooo that was funny
@alex alamangos OK Bnk0
Lol
lol
The greatest feat by a human ever and jeez the production team holy
Heh, I had no idea this was a 360 vid at first and I was like "why is alex narrating just grainy video of a rock face?" then I noticed the little hand and I was all "ohhhh..."
lmao same
Yeah, I realized AT CREDITS. Held the phone completely still, watching nervously. There's one scene with Alex narrating where I'm like why am I staring at a rock Nat Geo. I figured that is what Alex stares at while climbing and accepted the artistic parallel. So dumb. This was a 15 minute exercise for me...so beautiful when I watched it a second time standing up.
I didn’t even know what it was until your comment.
Ya I had no idea what I was watching. I could hear someone talking and I could see tall grass and I said to myself why are they filming the ground. LOL. I’m glad it wasn’t just me. ☠️

Alex playing the greatest game of “the floor is Lava” ever
Hahaha
Not far fetched from the floor is 2000ft below...
It's up there as one of the greatest single feats a human being has ever achieved.
I would reserve that category for people who actually advanced the human species in some way. As impressive as this is, it's still just entertainment.
@@MrFreeGman no. Anything that redefines what humanity is capable goes far beyond entertainment. Look beyond your surface impression of “wow! I couldn’t do that. How entertaining!” and consider the fact that no one has achieved this and not only that, no one thought it could be achieved. This achievement commands respect. Alex Honnold has many thousands of intricate moves in his head and has a blueprint of footholds and handholds in a precise sequence. That acquired knowledge takes massive amounts of preparation/dedication over at least a decade. It goes way beyond an activity that is solely concerned with an entertainment factor.
@@MrAristaeus I get that climbers are super passionate about their sport and I respect that. But I just don't see how climbing a rock amounts to anything significant in terms of humanity. I mean sure it's inspiring, but what can we build off it that benefits humanity?
@@MrFreeGman I see your point…this is a deeply intimate and personal adventure for himself…..it’s a fantastic feat, but could be categorized as a guilty pleasure.
I like his quote about insignificance, its interesting how we spend our lives, worrying, full of insecurities, wondering why we aren't better, wondering how we can be more important, have more of an impact on the world. But then you go out and see the tremendous bohemoth that is the world we live in, you see a visual representation of how umimpactful, how insignificant you truly are, but instead of the horror of an existential crises you should of expected, you feel happy, it brings you joy, laughter, it feels truly beautiful, and in that moment you realise seeking meaning out of life is a fools errand, the world doesn't have a plan for you nor does it care to make you one, you are life, you are simulatenously alone yet connected with all other life and you are what you feel, make and believe. If you wish to live, you must first die trying.
Does this go against god ?

I could spend days watching Alex climb. It just looks so easy, almost like there's no gravity. That's perfection.
4:15 "im not trying to overcome my fear, im just trying to step outside of it" Alex Honnold. MRI Brain Scans were done on Alex, and showed his Amygdala - the part of your brain which regulates one's fear response - barely responded at all when viewing a series of photos that would be considered terrifying for other average, everyday people. Him surviving this free solo ascent isn't down to Luck whatsoever.. Its down to repeating the same route over and over with ropes and gear, and visualizing every step and movement along the way, until he became comfortable enough for it to be second nature to him. This is the ONLY way this feat was made successful... With a complete mastery of the muscle memory involved, and the coordinated movements that were so entrenched into his subconscious they were second nature to him. Removing any and all fear in the process. Alex Honnold is the most precise, dedicated, and methodical athlete to be able to perform at this extremely high level for such an extreme distance. He is a legend that will surely go down in human history..
yup
yup,i saw that doc too
One of the most incredible things I've ever seen... He's the best
The greatest sport achievement ever by far!
Woah. This is such a cool video. First one that I experienced 360!
I was like wow, this is cool as heck! Makes you feel like you are right there. Breathtakingly Awesome! Incredible. Technology is becoming so good.
The music is annoying
This is a video that gives you sweaty palms whilst using the mouse on a large screen. Most people will be watching it on small phones though so loses the impact. Such is 2021
Did you fall?
Dude Alex is so humble
I am a concert violinist and I learn a lot from Alex. How to prepare well and overcome stage fright.Practice and practice correctly and reach the perfection.
김영근 You should feel the opposite of stage fright. Its one of the few times in life you're truly free and everyone wants to feel that with you. Try practicing without the instrument conveying your physical emotion (70% is the look). After performing if you are not sweating, exhausted and they are not standing applauding you're just making up the numbers and shouldn't bother.
@@andym28 Please rephrase it for me. I couldn't quite understand yet. Thank you.
@Shah Jacob I get it . Thank you.
김영근 that’s awesome you are so good at a specific thing in life. The difference here, though, is that if you play a wrong note, your body isn’t splattered all over the rocks and your existence gone.
the big difference is if you play a wrong note even after all that practice, you don't fall thousands of feet to your death.
This is iconic in many ways: his words, his deeds, the images, and the perfect use of 360⁰ camera.
This is absolutely astonishing! Really puts into perspective what an incredible climber he is and what free solo is all about.
One of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen on KZhead. Seriously like the raddest thing ever.
Respect for the cameraman turning the camera where I wanted it
If it wasn’t for my chihuahua almost knocking my iPad over and me reaching to catch it, I would not have realised this vide was 360 haha. Best video ever!
I watched this standing up (safely) in my living room and panning around with excitement at every new scene. Such an interactive way to experience this incredible footage. Stay strong, Alex!
Hands down one of the best if not the best video I’ve seen.
This has to be the craziest athletic acomplishment ever
My life flashed before me for him watching this.
"I'm not good at life, but I'm at least good at this"
The greatest athlete in the entire world. Hands down... Agility, strength, flexibility, quickness, and all the other intangibles. Concentration, nerve, adaptability, all on your own. Incredible...
Yeah but what's his vertical?
3,300 ft
What he does is incredible but if you're ranking athletes he wouldn't crack the top 10,000. You ever seen him try to throw a football? It's not pretty.
@@sparksdrinker5650 youre comparing football to this? thats just sad
@@aulendilthegreat873 He throws like a girl, therefore he's disqualified as greatest athlete of all time.
"Climbing the route is not just a physical challenge - it's also mental" - it sure is mental!!!
Watched the movie today. My hands were actually sweating while watching Alex climbs. It was that amazing.
This is nothing, apparently my granddad had to do something similar to this every day just to get to school if you listen to him tell it.
Both ways, I hear

@@patzacherson Humor is subjective. But I suppose it is supposed to be funny, I found it humerous in a small amount, but it was more humerous to read your comment though, the ignorance and childish behavior.
Unbelievable feat. Incredible videography and views! Wow! The most amazing thing about Honnolds accomplishment is his mental strength and focus. The climb is hard im sure, but to be able to do it mentally is the biggest factor. Some of us are not mentally able to do these things! Now that hes accomplished this i hope he sticks to safer things snd lives a long life.
I love Alex ! he's one of the few professional athletes that are really modest. No wonder he's nickname in Yosemite is Alex "No Big Deal" Honnold
What this guy has done remains incredible over a year later. Every time I think about this I’m just floored by the mental strength he’s managed to achieve. The only comparable thing I can think of is self immolating monks.
One of the greatest human achievement ever.
vishal vivek Not at all. It is totally useless.
this is the most incredible thing ive ever seen
In this day and age, our daily-consumed media is so saturated with sensational content that we are almost completely desensitized. But still, every clip I see of this particular ascent makes my mouth drop open. Even people who can't appreciate the technical aspects of the climbing can still feel this one, because everyone has climbed a tree or a boulder at some point in their life and felt that feeling where you're up high enough that you can't turn around and go back down until you've gone the rest of the way up. When I watch this, I imagine that feeling, except the rest of the way up is 3000 feet and will take 4 hours.
The 360 camera gives me goosebumps further he goes up. When you realize Alex did the ascension without ropes and he could give up at any moment but he's calm even at 1000 ft: this guy is awesome!
can we also take a moment of appreciation for how sick that van is. such an awesome lifestyle cruising around in that thing!
Just watching this was so intense My deepest admiration
Just watching this while sitting on my couch is making my heart race. Absolutely unimaginable how a person has the composure to undertake such an impossible-seeming feat.
Human beings doesn't have any particular purpose on Earth! And he started climbing that huge rock. Sick! I mean, he is the real absurdist! Great video!
Thank you National geographic! You add subtitles. So we deaf peoples can also understand and enjoy :)
My hands became sweaty just by watching this. Amazing feat!
Greatest single individual feat in human history.
My stomach was turning the entire time I watched this documentary. Alex you are crazy, brave, and also amazing. At the end of this life, you’ve lived 100x more than the rest of us. What an accomplishment. Just don’t always try to out do yourself. We all have are greatest moments.
Absolutely breathtaking and jaw-dropping video. Nice addition with the 360 view. Hope he finds what ever it is he's looking for. 🙂

Amazing feat by Alex H & congratulations to him for it. I watched climbers with ropes on El Cap, when I visited Yosemite 12 years before. Terrific 360 video!
Even though this was from a few years ago, the 360 view is still awesome! Alex also has the largest balls on earth, so it was an all around enjoyable experience.
If you are not afraid of heights watch in in Virtual Reality. That is the best way to watch it.
That is incredible. Both the climbing and the videography. Exceptional viewing
This is got to be one of the most unbelievable things that someone has ever done. This guy is amazing. If you watch free Solo he has the mentality that I never seen before it’s wild I don’t know what you would call it but it’s wild
I saw the Free Solo movie yesterday. And the way he did the karate kick and just smiled 2000ft up with no rope... I can't fathom his mind set.. Unbelievable moment.
A number of people were asking where to see the full movie. It will be broadcast on March 3, 2019 on National Geographic (at least in the USA and Europe). The people leaving negative comments appeared to me to just be people that had not worked out how to use a 360° video. I watched this on VR goggles and it was breathtaking. It would have been great it this video had been longer. The one question I have, that I did not see answered in the comments, is what 360° camera was used for this video. They did a great job of hiding how the cameras are mounted. A truly impressive 360° video.
I love this. This is heaven. I didn’t climb this difficulty-it was over to the left in The Books but my heart soars at the memory.
this is the most extreme sport of them all, a single mistake and game over, this is the very definition of hard.
