  • Fallout New Vegas also has a softlock. Yes Man is supposed to be the failsafe option similar to the Minutemen. He will never turn hostile and he will always respawn if he's killed. However, it's glitched where if you kill him with a laser or plasma weapon, he will disintegrate into an ash pile and will never respawn, meaning if you pissed off all other factions you cannot complete the game.

      @chainmengaming@chainmengamingАй бұрын
    • @@chainmengaming funny thing is, Yes Man is entirely meant to allow you to finish the game on a genocide route, as he always returns. but it would technically be "impossible" to kill everyone in the game and then finish it, as Yes Man dying from plasma/laser would "permanently kill" him (albeit in a way that the developers never intended), which would simultaneously have every character in the game dead except you and softlock you, causing you to no longer be able to finish the game. but there isn't any real reason to do this, as this "permanent" death wouldn't change anything in the end slides.

    • Y'know what. I'll leave the story for anyone who wants to hear it. Back in the day, I didn't really 100% games or restart them if I beat a game. I also loved Lego Star Wars so much that I would replay it regularly. In total, I probably replayed the story missions in freeplay around 50 or 60 times. Empire Strikes Back was also my favorite movie at the time, so bump that specific story up to 60-70 times. Having so many clears on that level in freeplay is what led to me having this softlock happen not once but twice. The funnier thing is that when it happened the first time, I thought the disc was messed up, so I ejected it and rubbed it on my shirt to "fix it." Of course, it worked fine when I tried again.

  • That glitch in Revenge of the Flying Dutchman wasn’t what killed Big Sky Interactive. It was THQ that did it. Big Sky had just recently become independent of a parent company that ran the developers ragged, and because of this, refused when THQ offered to purchase the studio. In the most epic “fuck you” ever, THQ basically blacklisted Big Sky in retaliation for not selling, and the studio closed because they could no longer find work to pay their employees. • I'm surprised that the pc port of manhunt isn't in this video, the game softlocks you out in the first level because when u get to a certain point, the game crashes. The game crashes because Rockstar put anti piracy measures thats supposed to prevent pirates from progressing. Problem is, is that now pirates play the game with no issue and people who bought the game are considered pirates.

    @gamejunk1e@gamejunk1eАй бұрын
    • Fun fact: This is due to Rockstar not porting the game to PC. When they decided to release the game on Steam 6 years after the original release, they just downloaded one of the already existing pirated copies and uploaded that to Steam. You can still find the credits to the pirates in the source code.

One level requires a transformation pickup to continue, but to access that pickup, you need the transformation from that very same pickup. It doesn't appear in the game before that point. • In Bendy and the Ink Machine, if you save your game directly after reaching Alice's floor for the first time but then quit the game before meeting her, when you load your save Boris won't run to the door and open it meaning you have to restart all the way from chapter 1. Happened to me on my first playthrough

    @davedog0984@davedog0984Ай бұрын
    • Bendy has a lot of issues. If you save during the ink hearts gather quest and have to quit and reload, you will have 6/5 hearts and the game won't allow you to progress. This is especially nasty as there's a bugged angel box that soft-locks your game (you can look around and pull up the menu, but can't leave the box) right in the maze where you gather the ink hearts.

  • What's crazy is that as long as you've never met the minutemen(avoided saving them in concord) you can do all of the nuka world quests you want and even raid settlements and still get the minuitemen ending. Preston will give you the quest open season meaning Bethesda thought about giving you the option to still side with them. What's weird is that the easy fix would just be allowing Preston to give you that quest even if you already joined the minutemen. You don't even have to raid a settlement for him to not like you anymore which is stupid because they kind of forced you to become the overboss or die.

    • @@mattboy5296 We're long since past the time of expecting people to "accept the consequences" of stuff that can just be reversed by going back to a previous save instead of, I dunno, spending hundreds more hours playing catch-up. If the player has the power to do that, then there's just no point in letting major NPCs die in the first place anyway. If they actually wanted consequences, they would only have 1 save file and have it autosave every time anything got updated. I'm so sick and tired of people holding Morrowind up on a pedestal for something that no one actually engages with in a meaningful way besides saying "huh, that's kinda neat, but that locks me out of content permanently" and just immediately reloading one of the hundreds of other save files

  • An old collectathon: Ty The Tasmanian Tiger. You play as Ty and use boomerangs as your primary weapon. The goal of the game is to go through different portals scattered around the hub to collect enough Thunder Eggs to power a device that will find and open a portal to one of the scattered Talismans guarded by your family that were scattered by the last boss. Each time you beat the boss of each area and recover the Talisman you will be given a new boomerang with elemental properties to open up more of the hub map (flamarang to melt an ice wall, frostyrang to put out burning logs, zappyrang to power a generator and open a door). There are cheat codes you can use to unlock all the boomerangs and skip ahead but doing so would set a flag for which area’s cutscenes would play locking the boss portal from spawning. There’s nothing you can do when it happens, checking the device will have a character say that you need 0 more Thunder Eggs to continue. You can still skip to the next area but it locked the save file out of 100%. I believe there’s also a small chance (maybe like 1/10?) that the portal to the boss Fluffy’s Fjord wouldn’t open even if you played normally.

  • So my cousin had the save corruption crash infront of me in the Spongebob game. Sadly we were very young so we didn't really investigate why we just assumed the save was deleted and she forgot or something. The theory I've heard that seems most likely having not played this game in over a decade. Is that the game periodically saves data to the memory card during certain loading screens. However because the game is rushed I assume it doesn't have streaming and general memory management configured in a sustainable way so the longer it goes the more issues with is likely to have with pushing data from disc into memory and then cleaning memory when it's not needed. So you probably get a situation where it loads data into a block of ram that's too small which hard crashes the system. And if it's saving data at that time then it would produce a corrupted save. This being more likely is they didn't test loading screens specifically when data was being saved as that would mean more data going around the PS2 board than usual when loading.

    @dasdaza@dasdazaАй бұрын

But if you kill him with a critical with a plasma or laser weapon, he'll be reduced to ash/goo and will no longer come back to life. When the raid first launched, Blizzard accidentally made the first boss so buggy that it was actually, physically impossible to defeat. People literally did the math at the time and found that there was no combination of abilities that could allow you to pass over C'Thun's armor, and no combination of healing spells that could heal through the amount of damage everybody in the raid took. It took close to 6 months before anybody was able to defeat him, and it was only after Blizzard re-worked the fight at least two separate times to make him SIGNIFICANTLY easier.

It also, on launch, wouldn’t let you refight bosses, wouldn’t let you rewatch the credits, and thusly not see the final cutscene if you didn’t beat the game with all golden spatulas on your first playthrough, and on my playthrough, I accidentally managed to permanently despawn the Goo Lagoo sand castle spatula early on in the game. I replayed the game about a year ago since my Switch had been broken for like 3 years and I wanted to see if the game had been fixed. It was nice, upyou could rematch bosses, golden spatulas didn’t despawn, everything was a bit smoother. He is a pivotal NPC and several quest stages rely on him being in the right place and doing the right thing, which you can't rely on. He can fail to talk at Alduin's Wall, he can not talk at all, and he can straight up vanish off of the face of the Nirn.

    • The hate Fallout 4 still gets reminds me of the hate people continued giving Cyberpunk 2077 a month after release, when it was more or less patched to standard. Unlike say, Fallout 76, Fallout 4 isn't inherently broken, and most of the complaints people have with it are self-inflicted or inherent to RPGs in general. For example: The voiced player, every RPG with dialog options since the 90s has had "Generic Good", "Evil/Jerk", and "Goodbye", with occasional options for "Clown" or "Tell me more about X". You've always been "playing someone else", usually a very dull one-note character. Even New Vegas only adds duplicate "Generic Good" options with a stat check, which just usually just exists to skip some minor leg work.

      @KiraSlith@KiraSlithАй бұрын
    • @@KiraSlithall those points you bring up are still very much problems, just because a lot of other similar games happen to feature them doesn't mean it's any less disappointing to see Fallout 4 so deeply hindered by them when the previous games (even 3 to an extent) didn't seem to have as severe of issues. It's one thing if Fallout 4 wants to have a voiced protag, or formulaic dialogue options, or even playing a story that's more cut out for you than free to the player to craft. But the difference is while many other games usually are at least executed well or have something more to offer to make up for the constraints of that design Fallout 4 simply does not. As for it not being a buggy mess of a game? It is, it's literally filled with so many damn bugs, some legit game breaking. Even on unmoddened vanilla saves that game can be a monster... But regardless it's still not a satisfying experience as many new features it has are either undercooked or don't really make up for the lack of refinement in other areas. And so many other returning features feel dumbed down to be more "streamlined" and "broadly appealing" because carving out your own niche isn't as financially fruitful as just appealing to the common denominator. So yeah no, Fallout 4 has problems, some it shares with other games in the genre but many are the fault of the way the game itself was designed and how Bethesda have become as developers.

      @Shift_Salt@Shift_SaltАй бұрын
    • @@Shift_Salt Except nobody complains when other games do it? People still cream their pants in excitement every time you mention Mass Effect, and it has an even worse voiced protagonist and the exact same generic tropey dialog options. Shepherd sounds bored most of the time, even when he's saying goodbye to Mordin when he sacrifices himself to bring an end to the Genophage, he sounds like he's just spotted a fly in his coffee, where even the normally monotone Mordin is expressing emotions. At least Jangles sounds and acts like a person, class clown behavior aside. I've completed multiple vanilla runs in the last 8 years without the game breaking (Edit: as of May 16th 2024 I just completed another vanilla run, the worst bug I encountered was one of Deacon's cameos not triggering), it's actually way less buggy than Skyrim still is to this day, unlike Skyrim I don't have to carefully do quests in a specific order to avoid the entire game world from having a conniption (the Civil War quests in particular are the buggiest). Congratulations on proving you haven't picked FO4 up since launch all the way back in 2015 in way too many words.

  • I recall a bug in Lego Star Wars 2 that renders Episode 5 Chapter 6 unbeatable. There are these cheats that you can enable after you buy them. One of them is invisibility where enemies can’t see or attack you. At the end of the level when you get to the Falcon, you have to kill a wave of enemies before the stage ends. But if you enable this cheat, the level won’t end after killing the last enemy. There is also an oversight in the SpongeBob Movie Game that renders the second level, I’m Ready Depression, unbeatable. You play as Patrick for the level. But when you get to the end of the level, you can switch to SpongeBob. You need him so you can walk jump up to an area for an optional challenge. But open there is a balcony that shows the starting area of the level. You can jump down there and replay the level as SpongeBob. But about half way through there a swing object that only Patrick can swing on. So you can’t beat the level as SpongeBob and there is no way to switch to Patrick.

There were also tons of bugs in the Wii version of the original LEGO Indiana Jones, including a level-locking bug where you would interact with a wardrobe in the bedroom that contains the passage to the Temple of Doom, where if you left the room and came back in, the wardrobe would be unactivated and you would be unable to interact with it again in order to proceed in the level.

  • I remember running into a problem a lot like the Twilight Princess issue in Sonic Frontiers, back when the game first launched. The game lets you unlock fast travel areas throughout its stages, but once you beat each area's bosses you move onto the next area and can't go back for a little while. So my first playthrough, I started the cutscene that sent me to the boss area, then decided I wanted to explore a bit more before actually doing the fight and moving on, and so fast traveled back to the main area with the intention of doing a bit more before going back. The game let me travel away... only to me to find out later on trying to return that there was no fast travel back to the boss, plus the normal means of getting there in the level was spent and thus I had no way of progressing forward, forcing me to start the game over from the beginning. I don't know if this is still there in the current built (I doubt it), but it was very annoying at the time.

It's been 10+ years so maybe I'll recall some details incorrectly, but here's the thing: There's a point in the main story - a bit before the game's halfway point - where Batman has to infiltrate the Gotham City Police Department. You eventually get to an elevator, trigger a cutscene with Commissioner Gordon, fight some police officers and then you have to leave through the only door in the floor to progress the story. However, the developers accidentaly left something there: the elevator's shaft is open to explore, so you can use it to go back to previous floors of the GCPD. Me, as a kid, didn't see the exit door. I saw the shaft, then I went down. I don't know how that's possible, but once you get to that shaft and go back to the other floors, there is no way to get back to the floor you're supposed to be in. Going back through the shaft doesn't work anymore, nor does the elevator door to trigger the cutscene ever opens. You either restart the save data or you'll be stuck at the GCPD forever.

  • I found one in Spyro A Hero's Tale that I've not seen anyone else mention. In the level Cloudy Domain, you're supposed to go forward and get the Wing Shield ability that allows you to deal with the flying enemies. However, you can simply jump past them with no problem. If you do this, you can eventually reach a platform with a Light Gem on it, which autosaves your game. The problem is that this isn't how you're supposed to reach the platform, you're supposed to break a Dark Gem that summons some floating platforms to take you to there instead, and so if you grab the gem this way, there's no way off the platform because you can't reach another platform and it will respawn you on the platform if you throw yourself off. Yes, I discovered this myself on my first playthrough of the game during my freshman year of college and I did have to restart the game.

My teammate hid the gardener's keys in the bush in the garden, and I closed the door from the outside. The only way to open the door again is to get the gardener to open it. But he needs his keys to do so. However, since there's a maximum distance the two players can travel from each other, and I was outside the garden, my teammate couldn't get the keys from the bush because it was too far away. And the gardener was completely useless to finding them either, so we were stuck and just played something else instead.

  • Ah, the "Unwinnable By Oversight" in Grim Fandango. I never played the game, but a lot of early Sierra games were NOTORIOUS for this. At least in some of the later ones, while still possible, the game threw you a bone after you screwed yourself out of a winnable scenario by saying something like, "Your inventory feels lighter than normal," or "You feel like you forgot something very important." One of my favorite scenarios of an unintentionally unbeatable level in a video game is because it was a game I OWNED as a kid! And that was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The game made by Ultima. No, not the one on the NES, but rather the IBM port of it. Due to incorrect mapping of one level layout, a ceiling in a sewer section is lower in the IBM port than it was in the NES original. Since this part of the ceiling is directly over a body of water in the sewers that functioned like a bottomless pit, it was therefore impossible to complete the IBM version of this game.

The thing about Dagobah is that there's swamps which can only be traversed by R-2 or another astromech droid. Any other character just gets insta-gibbed if they step into them. If you use an astromech to move deep into a swamp and then cycle to another character, it will result in an infinite death loop where your character immediately dies upon spawning. Since you have a tiny time window of invulnerability after respawning, you can slowly move back onto solid ground or cycle back to an astromech in order to get out, or alternatively, you can drop in as player 2 and drop out as player 1, causing the stuck character to get teleported if you leave the zone, so it's not a complete game over, but it is quite frustrating.
