Dave, the Schools in your town should send you more students. Your expertise needs to be shared to the young generations. I can say it, because I worked with my uncle in his cabinet shop when I was in High School and in College. Everything that i learned has helped me in life!!!
exactly, kids today need to learn some basic skills that then gives them some confidence. also they need to know it's OK to not know something - they just need the confidence to admit that sometimes and to ask for clarification / information.

You are no doubt taking way more care and using much more precision than the original builders. In a Romany vardo, we would have put the horizontal pieces on the inside. I am curious to see what the covering is going to be, We would have had a layer of chintz fabric on the inside, a layer of thick felt as insulation, followed by the standard green canvas as the outer layer.
When the shepherd filled the wagon with his belongings, food and water, I hope the shepherd made his sheep earn their keep by hitching them all up to pull this heavy wagon.

Hi Dave, and Diane, well that answers my question about the rib over the kitchen cabinet interfering. It sure looked like it was going to hit the cabinet, but I guess it's all going back together as it was. The ribs in place give a great perspective of interior space. My great-grandfather ran 5000 head of sheep. He had Basque sheep herders working for him. I remember the sheep herder’s wagons. Couldn’t have been the lap of luxury living in these little wagons and chasing sheep, but I guess it was a living! Your attention to detail on this project is nothing short of remarkable, thanks.

I have appreciated your talents for years. I have watched every single video you’ve done. Tonight I was watching “Restoration Roads with Cliff Harp - Montana Covered Wagon” about the so called restoration of 4 Sheep Herds Wagons. My appreciation of your talents quadrupled while watching the so called restoration. I would call it more of a recreation than a restoration. I kept telling my wife that my guy wouldn’t do it that way - he would do this way and then explain exactly how you would do it. The wagons are in Greycliff, MT. You are a very talented individual and I really enjoy watching you work.
You don't need advice Dave but i'll make one suggestion. I changed my jeans to a pair of work pants that have removable knee pads. Not only do they protect my knees from harm, they also protect my knees from the cold when I'm on concrete. The pants I got have plenty of convient pockets for all I need to have with me as I work. The only down side with the pockets is it adds twenty pounds to my weight. I don't want to see you injure your knees. I want to see you continue with our wonderful and entertaning videos! I'm pushing 80 years and I still love working.
I also have work pants with knee pad pockets. I absolutely have to have them .

"How, Sweet It Is" to go from building all new and getting them nice and shiny finished. This project is building old and getting/keeping them dull and weathered. Not as easy as it may seem in the real world .

I'm certain, given your usual precision of construction, that once you set that first bow you could just make the others the same length and mount them at their stations. Any arc discrepancies could be resolved with a heat gun. Adding the purlins will also tame the errant bow. I would guess your favorite shop tool, next to your hydraulic press, would be that Fay and Egan table saw. Your camera work showing that beast ripping the slats was exceptional! This is a great series! Thanks!

Your conclusion on the number of bows relative the snowload, really exited me. It perfectly align with the current building code here in Sweden - the further north you build, the bigger the trusses. It´s always 16" apart (60 cm) though.
FWIW - I think it might have been a good idea to measure the installed length of the first bow, and use that as a pattern for the rest of them. This would also help forming the top stringers, canvas, etc.
I appreciate your bringing us along. It is interesting to watch you share where you discover the clues this wagon gives each step of the way.

Dave, You are a national treasure
It isn't the Space Shuttle but it IS the Sheep Shuttle. The rare 6 bow lowland type was used in emergencies to get to the Snow Line. Only Dave would start installing the slats at the peak.
How else would you do it ? Seems to me only one way to get it right. Like Dave said, kind of like setting trusses. If you don't get the top right everything else will be off.
@@dallasarnold8615 The Bows are all Vertical checked off the leveled floor. Slats could be started at the bottom. I would have left the 6 bows perhaps.
@@gordbaker896 Well, you have made a couple of errors here. One, many times Dave has told us that his floor is not level. Yes, he did square them with his combination square in relation to the box, but that is a small square. However, you might recall that Dave commented that the #2 bow was off by 1/4 and another ( I think it was #4 ) was off by an inch. If he had started at the bottom this could possibly get off even more growing as he moves up. And then he would have to go back and adjust them all. Anyone that has worked on framing a roof on a house or a large commercial building knows this as just second nature. When setting trusses or rafters the first then you do is align the ridge, and the rest will pull into place. You always want to get your alignment straight at the farthest point, which in this case it the top of the bow. Consider doing a layout for a foundation. If you merely use a square in the corners, and then check for square by measuring the diagonals, chances are it will be off. The same applies here.
@@dallasarnold8615 In the video I watched, He LEVELED the floor of the wagon and items above it were level/square/perpendicular to that. Bows are the same height as installed. Your errors! Done.
@@gordbaker896 Apparently you missed the part where I said Dave squared the bows to the box of the wagon. So, you are simply restating exactly what I said. So, what does the height of the bows being the same have to do with them being perpendicular to the box ? NOTHING. And Dave points out that he is NOT leveling the box, but making all the corners even. Unless his floor were perfectly level, which he says it is NOT, this does not make the box/bed of the wagon LEVEL. So, what errors are you referring to ? I was not trying to start a feud, just pointing out how construction is normally done. But if you want a feud, I can show you your own butt.

You get to peek inside the mind of the original builder. Instead of thinking mathematically and dividing 12 by half and making six bows. They did a more organic method of dividing into four sections/spaces. Now that you know how they are thinking you can use that thinking to infer how they would space the purlains and other layout mysteries.

Not sure how much time you spent re-clamping bows but perhaps a steel rectangle tube piece could be the clamped jig & slide the bows inside, a small rubber pad for friction perhaps. Planer reminds me of the movie Dumb & Dumber (1994) "the most annoying sound in the world" scene :) Good detective work again on the design of this rig.

I saw a wagon replica once and the bow ends 15:02 were under the first and last bow, the canvas fit smoothly on the bow where it was tied down around the front and back.
I have an idea for you. Design and build a wagon that James West, of the TV series, Wild Wild West, would have in his ''arsenal''. The first electric generator was built in 1831, so you could squeeze that in there. When I saw the manure spreader, I thought about electrified wagons. Another idea i thought of, is an ice delivery wagon that has a refrigeration compressor driven off the axle. I noticed in a lot of Hollywood movies, they used the wrong wagons. Something based on a sulky could have been the first EMT service, or mail delivery.

By any chance, a sheep wagon’s insulated cover contains wool insulation? I know wool resist mold and repels water. Plus it can be felted to any thickness desired.

It's Bluegrass, maybe "Union Station". Allison Krauss usually sings with them but I do believe they have put out some instrument albums without her. If you like bluegrass you will like them.

If you paint your bows golden, would you have the golden arches? If you had weevils in the wagon, would they be bow weevils??
My first thought was that the slats would be on the inside of the bows. And they still could. He only clamped the center one so far. Dave does have a tendency to surprise us sometimes. But I am sure he will explain why one way over the other in a future video.

Any Shepard that had to live in that wagon during the winter would opt for the additional bow! Also I just realized from this episode that the door was at the front of the wagon. I assumed the door to the living space was at the rear because that is how pickup truck campers are.

I’m thinking of the original builders creating this with hand-tools, doing things like planing the slats and rounding them over with moulding planes - a prodigious amount of work.
Looks like you were using a cloth tape when spacing those slats on the bows, if so it's a good idea instead of fighting a metal tape, thanks for another informative video🤗😎🤗😎
