Wow! You don’t want to miss this episode! I hope you are able to feel like you are here with us as we explore the famous Sikh Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib) in Amritsar, India. It is nice and cool in India’s Punjab state. Our goal for today is to spend all day at the Golden Temple (Darbar Sahib), but before we do that we need to get some Indian street food for breakfast. We head in search of a local streetside restaurant (known as a Dhaba) because we plan to each as much kulcha (buttery stuffed bread) as we can while we are in Punjab. Our first stop is at the famous Bhai Kulwant Singh - Kulchian Wale. We had to wait a while to get a seat, but it was worth it. The food was amazing and our tummies were full when we left. Then, we went in search of headscarves (both males and females are required to cover their heads while in the temple). After that, we were ready to experience a full day at Amritsar’s Golden Temple.
In this video, Jonathan walks you through what to expect while visiting the Golden Temple: checking your shoes, entering the temple, walking around, stepping into the Amrit Sarovar water surrounding the Golden Temple, eating the Langar, exploring the food preparation area (Cedar tries to jump in and help out), receiving the (karah prasad) and more.
This is a bittersweet moment for us, as we have to say goodbye to India for now (we will be back!). Please join us on our long layover in Dubai, where we explore a variety of cuisine options!

ABOUT US
We are the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly with our three children. We sold our home in Alaska, USA, eight years ago, and headed overseas. We are teachers and found fantastic teaching positions in Chennai, India. Two years later, we moved to the United Arab Emirates. Three years after that, during the beginning of the pandemic, we made the move to our current teaching jobs in Indonesia. We love traveling and finding adventures as a family. We hope that our travels will inspire and provide our children with the confidence to meet new people, try new foods, and enjoy learning a new language. We hope our vlogs will inspire you to get out and travel, too!

When your daughter volunteered to help out in the Langar it showed how well she is brought up! In sikh culture helping in the Langar is one of the nicest things one can do.
We absolutely loved the experience!
Not just in sikh culture. Its in buddhist jain hindu aka indian culture to make serve food
@@zerocarbon6787 yup I agree 👍 But what Sikh culture doing in the world no one can do 💯 Waheguru ji 🙏
@@zerocarbon6787 bruh!!! That's why india is starving 😂😂. I have only seen sikhs give free food but never seen a "buddist jain hindu aka indian culture" do it. Stop lying. haha

Well done, Jonathan, how you manage to get your family through such a crowd, carrying Forest, commenting on what you see and film at the same time. Very interesting video! Thank you.
Thank you so much for your kind words. It's absolutely our pleasure to be in India.

Definitely very crowded but I really appreciate the patience of your kids, Johnathan and Kelly. And Forest sings so well 😅
Thank you so much!
Accepting with both the palms open and joined together, is a sign of humble acceptance in Indian culture, from someone whom one considers a 'Giver'. Here the volunteer is serving food to you on behalf of the almighty, as no pilgrim is entitled to a service as such. Since the roti/bread is considered as a staple, it is treated as a Prasad from the Almighty, and hence it is asked to be accepted with open palms. It is a gentle reminder to everyone who partakes the langar that all of us are equal and also we are beggars in the court of the Almighty/God/Nature/Universe and that every aspect of our survival, may it be the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the cotton we wear etc. etc. , is provided to us only by the grace of mother nature. Essentially it's a lesson in humility to curb one's false sense of Ego.
Thank you so much for the context. I hope I did not offend.
@@BagsPackedFamily You are a very kind and humble person and so is your family. There are a lot of unsaid and even unexplained traditions in the Indian culture that even Indians at times are unaware of, so one cannot expect foreign tourists or new visitors to be aware of such intricacies. But by asking such questions, a seeker opens himself to a new realm of understanding. And that's the real essence of any pilgrimage. Also, be rest assured that a seeker like yourself cannot offend anyone. Happy travels and take care.
@@BagsPackedFamily Not at all . Its gurudwara = holy place , no one will get offended .God forgives one and all . N u dint commit any sin or offence . God bless u n ur family. Watching from Mumbai

@@BagsPackedFamily when you put out one hand to receive roti, it is like you are begging. With two hands you are receiving an offering from the temple.

@@BagsPackedFamily oh well, enjoy the Indian winter weather, Alaska weather especially anchorage last 6 months were horrible. There was non stop rainfall in the fall, then 5-6 foot snow this winter. Not much snow plowing anywhere.

School education give us knowledge & different culture and religion in world give us manners. You are very nice mom dad . 👍🇮🇳❤️
Thank you so much, ₐₙGᵣY Cₐₜ GₐₘᵢₙG
These are true sanatan values we Sikhs have . The Indic culture
You gotta accept the roti with both hands cause it shows that you're being respectful to the food you're being served and the server (volunteer) serving the food.
Jonathan and Kelly morning from New Jersey your right this was an epic vlog don’t know how you made it with the crowd very interesting and informative take care safe travel Granite Cedar and Forest you rock 👍
Accepting the Roti with one hand is disrespect towards babaji. Food in Indian culture is like a ritual, one has to pay respect to accept it. Nice to see your whole family here , be blessed ❤️
I see. Thank you for the explanation.
If there's a third visit to the temple, go at night. Golden temple looks beautiful at night
The water is safe as they have an RO plant inside the premises where they fill the water from. You should've got in touch with a local who could've guided you to all the places in Amritsar and also explained the history behind the important spots in the Golden Temple. Most people don't know about the Bungas or caves in yhe golden temple but they have a historical significance and worth seei6 once. The kada prashad (wheat halwa) after you made the donation was for your consumption.
If you come to India one or two time more your children's will teach Indian rich culture and they never leave you alone in their life. You have a cute family. Lot of love for you.
I hope and wish you're safe and happy trip in Amritsar and I understand the population is very high in India however everyone's manage and I think you must have managed too. My Lots of LOVE from United States Military Officer. Chardikala (Eternal Optimism)
Your visit to Golden Temple Amritsar is welcomed. Hope you would have enjoyed the traditions of sikh community and the people.
I haven't visited the Golden Temple, but I assume when they asked to hold two hands for the roti- bread, it is to likely signify as a respectful way of receiving the prasad- food offering from God. That's how in Hindi temples too people usually take the usual sweet and or fruit Prasad offerings. I am happy to see this video and live vicariously through your family's experience. Quite cool how you all enjoyed the kulcha meal before entering the Golden temple. The dessert was likely boondi laddo. Made with fried besan (chickpea flour) that is soaked in sugar syrup and also some ghee is used to make the laddoo, sometimes some spice or nuts might be there in it too. Was lovely seeing her volunteer and also loved seeing the pics of the kids form your last visit.
loving family always blessed by the lord 💚

This was absolutely amazing. Awesome and really fantastic all of you there..
Thank so much Jam Rock Jr! We really enjoyed Punjab.
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US THIS RELIGIOUS VIDEO. A BIG APPRECIATION FROM CANADA.
It's actually called Harminder sahib. It's a Gurudwara. One may ask the difference. There are many temples which only allow a specific relegion group people wherein a Gurudwara regardless of where it is, welcomes people from any creed color caste with open hands.
Bro I recently started to watch your content.. You are little different vloger I saw foreign vloging alone but you vlog with full your family that's different... And have you watched 'BREAKING BAD'
